    Description / Table of Contents: TThis book presents interdisciplinary evaluation criteria for MWEPs and applies the criteria to the Lower Jordan Valley (Middle East) and the Fergana Valley (Central Asia). Both cases are characterized by transboundary conflicts, challenges caused by demographic and climate change, and by political and societal pressures. Based on the findings, the book provides recommendations for science and political decisions makers as well as for international financing institutions. It also outlines research gaps from an interdisciplinary perspective. In the past, major water engineering projects (MWEPs) have been used as an instrument to cope with the demands of growing populations and for enhancing development progress. Experiences with MWEPs have shown that a purely technical approach has not always brought about the desired results. In many cases, MWEPs even had negative implications for society and environment. Therefore, improved management strategies and enhanced technologies for a sustainable water resource management system are needed in order to meet present and future challenges. Furthermore, the continuous evaluation and optimization of these measures is essential. This book presents the results of the Interdisciplinary Research Group "Society – Water – Technology" of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

    Description / Table of Contents: Human activities are significantly modifying the natural global carbon (C) cycles, and concomitantly influence climate, ecosystems, and state and function of the Earth system. Ever increasing amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) are added to the atmosphere by fossil fuel combustion but the biosphere is a potential C sink. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of C cycling in the biosphere is crucial for identifying and managing biospheric C sinks. Ecosystems with large C stocks which must be protected and sustainably managed are wetlands, peatlands, tropical rainforests, tropical savannas, grasslands, degraded/desertified lands, agricultural lands, and urban lands. However, land-based sinks require long-term management and a protection strategy because C stocks grow with a progressive improvement in ecosystem health.

Die Texte sind so formuliert, dass sie sowohl dem Fachmann einen schnellen Überblick liefern als auch dem interessierten Laien verständlich sind. Das Bundesgebiet wird in zehn hydrogeologische Großräume, 36 hydrogeologische Räume und 247 hydrogeologische Teilräume untergliedert. Diese Teilräume und ihre Hydrogeologie werden detailliert beschrieben. Gesteinsart, Hohlraumart, Verfestigung, hydraulische Durchlässigkeit und der geochemische Gesteinstyp der regional jeweils wichtigsten Grundwasserleiter werden dokumentiert. Es folgt eine Charakterisierung des Stockwerkbaus (Lithologie und Abfolge) der hydrogeologischen Einheiten sowie ihrer Mächtigkeiten. Ebenso dokumentiert sind die Grundwasserdynamik mit Flurabständen, Vorflutverhältnissen und Potenzialverhältnissen im Grundwasser sowie die Ergiebigkeiten. Abschließend erfolgt eine Beurteilung der Schutzfunktion der Grundwasserüberdeckung und der wasserwirtschaftlichen Bedeutung des jeweiligen Teilraumes.
