Abstract: This book gathers the latest information on various kinds of natural, plant-based sweet and super sweet sweeteners. A book on alternative, natural sweeteners with zero or very few calories is extremely timely and useful, especially in light of the decreasing amount of cultivable land, ever-increasing demand for sucrose, and the well-known risks of sugar consumption. Every year, more than five million people die due to diabetes and diabetes-associated diseases like cardiovascular conditions, kidney disorders, liver cancer, etc. This book describes the use of natural non-saccharide super sweet (NSSS) principles to avoid such maladies. Readers will gain an in-depth understanding of various sweeteners, the molecular basis of sweetness, sweeteners’ general classification, plant sources, etc. In turn, the book focuses on the propagation, cultivation and conservation of NSSS plants (NSSSP) and extraction of super sweet principles and granting of Generally Recognised As Safe (GRAS) certificates for sweeteners. The closing chapter describes the eco-physiological difference between sacchariferous sweet and non-sacchariferous super sweet plants and principles. This book will be of great interest to researchers, professors, graduate students and practitioners in the fields of food science, nutrition, ayurveda, plant physiology, unani, chemotaxonomy, naturopathy, biochemistry and plant breeding. It will also be of interest to industry and alternative sweetener manufacturers.

Abstract: This informative book discusses the latest research on the risk factors and therapeutics in dementia. WHO calls dementia a public health priority. Dementia manifests as a group of symptoms associated with decline in memory or other thinking skills and is severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities. It occurs frequently among elderly people, but it is not necessarily part of the normal aging process. The book has been divided into two broad sections. The first section reviews the risk factors involved in developing dementia, including various medical conditions, lifestyle choices, as well as genetics. The latter section describes various therapeutic interventions in dementia. Although there is no known cure for dementia, this book underlines the current treatment strategies that could momentarily reduce the symptoms and improve the quality of life of the patients. This book highlights the global effort to find better ways to halt the progression of dementia and develop novel therapeutic strategies. The book would be an interesting read for advanced graduate students and researchers working in the field of neuroscience, genetics, and medicine. It will generate good interest to neurologists, psychiatrists, geriatricians, cardiologists, internal medicine practitioners, epidemiologist, and public health workers.

Description / Table of Contents: Neural Dynamics in Motor and Sensory Systems and in Cognitive Functions -- Cognitive Network and Multi-Scale Neural Network Dynamics -- Neuroengineering, Neuroinformation and Brain Computer Interaction -- Modelling Higher-Order Functions and Dysfunctions -- Oscillation, Synchronization, Neural Plasticity, and Coordination Dynamics from Neural to Social Systems.
Abstract: This book contains original articles submitted to the Seventh International Conference on Cognitive Neurodynamics (ICCN 2019). The brain is an endless case study of a complex system characterized by multiple levels of integration, multiple time scales of activity, and multiple coding and decoding properties. The contribution of several disciplines, mathematics, physics, computer science, neurobiology, pharmacology, physiology, and behavioral and clinical sciences, is necessary in order to cope with such seemingly unattainable complexity that transforms the experimental information into a tricky puzzle which hides the correspondence with model predictions. This conference gathered active participants to discuss ideas and pose new questions from different viewpoints, ranging from single neurons and neural networks to animal/human behavior in theoretical and experimental studies. The conference is organized with plenary lectures, mini-symposia, interdisciplinary round tables, and oral and poster sessions.

Abstract: Before the concept of history began, humans undoubtedly acquired life benefits by discovering medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) that were food and medicine. Today, a variety of available herbs and spices are used and enjoyed throughout the world and continue to promote good health. The international market is also quite welcoming for MAPs and essential oils. The increasing environment and nature conscious buyers encourage producers to produce high quality essential oils. These consumer choices lead to growing preference for organic and herbal based products in the world market. As the benefits of medicinal and aromatic plants are recognized, these plants will have a special role for humans in the future. Until last century, the production of botanicals relies to a large degree on wild-collection. However, the increasing commercial collection, largely unmonitored trade, and habitat loss lead to an incomparably growing pressure on plant populations in the wild. Therefore, medicinal and aromatic plants are of high priority for conservation. Given the above, we bring forth a comprehensive volume, “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Healthcare and Industrial Applications”, highlighting the various healthcare, industrial and pharmaceutical applications that are being used on these immensely important MAPs and its future prospects. This collection of chapters from the different areas dealing with MAPs caters to the need of all those who are working or have interest in the above topic.

Abstract: Do cephalopods change color when under distress? Is the reptilian heart analogous to a diaphragm positive displacement pump? Are digital twins the answer for animal experimentation? This book explores the new field of veterinary engineering science and discusses how to better measure vital signs in exotic and companion animals. A vast opportunity exists for developing novel technologies that target reductions to the number of invasive procedures patients are subjected to. We examine improvements to animal care and enhancement of animal welfare while creating a more sustainable veterinary healthcare ecosystem. The authors address the challenges engineers face in designing healthcare equipment for animals and how the field of veterinary engineering contributes to traditional veterinary medicine. This book brings a novel field of engineering to train future veterinarians and engineers on design and application of technology to veterinary medicine.
