Philipp Stadelmaier wagt ausgehend von den Schriften des Filmkritikers Serge Daney und Jean-Luc Godards Videoserie Histoire(s) du cinéma einen Neuansatz. Erstmals führt er zwei einflussreiche Figuren der französischen Filmkultur systematisch zusammen und reinterpretiert sie als Kommentatoren des Kinos und seiner Geschichte. So gelingt es, einen cine-philologischen Impuls für filmwissenschaftliche Debatten zu setzen: Als auszulegender, bedeutungsoffener Primärtext erhält das »Kino« in der Post-Kino-Ära neue Kraft und Schärfe.

In einer historisch weit gespannten Studie unternimmt Hanno Depner eine kultur- und medienwissenschaftliche Kritik der blinden Bevorzugung von Diskursivität. Im Fokus steht die Konturierung des epistemischen Potentials von Diagrammen im Verhältnis zu Schrift und Bild. Dabei wird das Diagramm als Paradigma einer Philosophie vorgeschlagen, die sich als Orientierung versteht. Das erfordert jedoch die angemessene Berücksichtigung der ästhetischen Dimension des Diagramms, wofür der Vorschlag eines »hybrid optimierten Diagramms« entwickelt wird.

Dies gilt nur vordergründig, da jede Wahl sich notwendig auf eine Unterscheidung stützt: Nur was zuvor Bedeutung gewinnt (als wählbar erscheint), kann nachträglich als Wahlversprechen gelten. Wie nicht zuletzt der Beitrag von Niklas Luhmann verdeutlicht, ist hier ein Paradox am Werk: Die »Freiheit der Wahl« braucht eine Einschränkung - und erhält damit Selektionscharakter. Sie beinhaltet ein (Aus-)Gewähltes und ein Aussortiertes; eine Kehrseite des Prozesses, der für sich eine Freiheit beansprucht. Da diese Differenz nicht auf die Objektseite (das Gewählte) reduzierbar ist, sondern den Zugriff selbst (mit-)bestimmt, ist der synonyme Gebrauch von »Freiheit« und »Wahl« zu problematisieren. Dies versucht der Band in struktureller Standortbestimmung sowie spezifisch für die Felder Kunst, Literatur und Medien zu leisten.

It also brought forth a new discipline, visual culture studies, and a hotly contested debate unfolded between art history and visual culture studies over the interpretation of visual culture, whose impact can still be felt today. In this first comparative study Susanne von Falkenhausen reveals the concepts of seeing as scholarly act that underwrite these competing approaches to visuality and society, along with the agendas of identity politics that motivate them. In close readings of key texts spanning from the early 20th century to the present the author crosses expertly between American, German, and British versions of art history, cultural studies, aesthetics, and film studies.

    Description: Journalism ethics have long relied on a conceptual distinction between professional communicators and their audience in the process of ascribing responsibility. In a time of participation and produsage, however, this distinction has become obsolete. This chapter presents results from three waves of problem-centered interviews with online journalists, media users, and experts from the field of media self-regulation in order to identify and structure the ethical problems of user participation in journalism. The results of the empirical study provide evidence of a participatory turn in journalism ethics, which is, however, by no means complete. Although participants describe similar challenges they encounter in the process of participatory content production, they refer to different sets of norms and values to justify quality judgments about their media products. The analysis shows that the principles of reciprocity and mutuality, as discussed in communitarian ethics and the ethics of care, could serve as new leitmotifs in the future process of shaping a timely ethic of produsage.

    Description: Given the phenomenal popularity of mukbang (a live-streamed eating show) among young people, first in Korea and now globally, it is no longer a secret that they like to watch other people eating and cooking in the digital age. This chapter provides an overview of the evolution of mukbang culture in Korea while exploring the sociocultural meanings of this new cultural phenomenon. The chapter suggests that mukbang as a social phenomenon is deeply rooted in the precarious contexts of Korean youth, also known as the ingyeo generation. Young people’s increasing engagement with mukbang illustrates how a shifting sociocultural structure engages with an emerging affective structure through digital mediation. Young Koreans’ negotiation of their precarious present and future through vicarious experiences of binge eating implies how the basic needs of eating are mediated, spectacularized and resignified as a subcultural practice.

    Description: Newsreel cinema and television not only served as an important tool in the shaping of political spheres and the construction of national and cultural identities up to the 1960s. Today’s potent televisual forms were furthermore developed in and strongly influenced by newsreels, and much of the archived newsreel footage is repeatedly used to both illustrate and re-stage past events and their significance. This book addresses newsreel cinema and television as a medium serving the formation of cultural identities in a variety of national contexts after 1945, its role in forming audiovisual narratives of a »biopic of the nation«, and the technical, aesthetical, and political challenges of archiving and restaging cinematic and televisual newsreel.
