    Description: This book explores how dementia studies relates to dementia’s growing public profile and corresponding research economy. The book argues that a neuropsychiatric biopolitics of dementia positions dementia as a syndrome of cognitive decline, caused by discrete brain diseases, distinct from ageing, widely misunderstood by the public, that will one day be overcome through technoscience. This biopolitics generates dementia’s public profile and is implicated in several problems, including the failure of drug discovery, the spread of stigma, the perpetuation of social inequalities and the lack of support that is available to people affected by dementia. Through a failure to critically engage with neuropsychiatric biopolitics, much dementia studies is complicit in these problems. Drawing on insights from critical psychiatry and critical gerontology, this book explores these problems and the relations between them, revealing how they are facilitated by neuro-agnostic dementia studies work that lacks robust biopolitical critiques and sociopolitical alternatives. In response, the book makes the case for a more biopolitically engaged ""neurocritical"" dementia studies and shows how such a tradition might be realised through the promotion of a promissory sociopolitics of dementia.

    Description: The Gender-Sensitive University explores the prevailing forces that pose obstacles to driving a gender-sensitive university, which include the emergence of far-right movements that seek to subvert advances towards gender equality and managerialism that promotes creeping corporatism. This book demonstrates that awareness of gender equality and gender sensitivity are essential for pulling contemporary academia back from the brink. New forms of leadership are fundamental to reforming our institutions. The concept of a gender-sensitive university requires re-envisioning academia to meet these challenges, as does a different engagement of men and a shift towards fluidity in how gender is formulated and performed. Academia can only be truly gender-sensitive if, learning from the past, it can avoid repeating the same mistakes and addressing existing and new biases.     Description: The chapter analyzes the cycle of the anti-nuclear movement that followed the Fukushima accident in March 2011. Employing functional typology, the chapter categorizes the movement’s organizations into seven types (direct action, research and education, policy advocacy, aid, watchdog, legal, and other) and shows that the post-Fukushima wave of protests was much broader in scope and more diverse in terms of actors and organizational forms than often assumed. Tracing the origins of the post-Fukushima cycle, the analysis reveals three streams of protests that emerged soon after the Fukushima accident (Freeters, Old Guard, Ecologists), which later merged to form a coalition, Hangenren. The direct-action groups that constitute the most visible form of social protest, called by Oguma Eiji “the flower of the movement,” exhibit characteristics of new social movements, although the chapter underlines the fact that the post-Fukushima anti-nuclear ecosystem included both the new groups formed after March 2011 and the old ones established before and after the Chernobyl accident.

Andererseits hält diese Mesalliance erstaunlich viel aus - selbst nach blutigen Konflikten arrangiert man sich wieder und findet ein neues Gleichgewicht der Frustration. Die Hoffnung, es gehe trotz allem stetig aufwärts, muss derzeit wieder einmal begraben werden.

    Description: Building on work in feminist studies, queer studies and critical race theory, this volume challenges the universality of propositions about human nature, by questioning the boundaries between predominant neurotypes and ‘others’, including dyslexics, autistics and ADHDers. This is the first work of its kind to bring cutting-edge research across disciplines to the concept of neurodiversity. It offers in-depth explorations of the themes of cure/prevention/eugenics; neurodivergent wellbeing; cross-neurotype communication; neurodiversity at work; and challenging brain-bound cognition. It analyses the role of neuro-normativity in theorising agency, and a proposal for a new alliance between the Hearing Voices Movement and neurodiversity. In doing so, we contribute to a cultural imperative to redefine what it means to be human. To this end, we propose a new field of enquiry that finds ways to support the inclusion of neurodivergent perspectives in knowledge production, and which questions the theoretical and mythological assumptions that produce the idea of the neurotypical. Working at the crossroads between sociology, critical psychology, medical humanities, critical disability studies, and critical autism studies, and sharing theoretical ground with critical race studies and critical queer studies, the proposed new field – neurodiversity studies – will be of interest to people working in all these areas.

Examining the exploitation of this vacuum of leadership and opportunity by new demagogues, the author considers two important yet overlooked dimensions of this new populism: the mobilization of both religion and masculinity. By understanding religion as a dynamic social force that can be mobilized for purposes of social solidarity and by appreciating the sociological arguments that hyper-masculinity is caused by social injury, Roose considers how these key social factors have been particularly important in contributing to the emergence of the new demagogues and their followers. Roose identifies the challenges that this poses for Western liberal democracy and argues that states must look beyond identity politics and exclusively rights-based claims and, instead, consider classical conceptions of citizenship.

Karl-Heinrich Bette zeigt in seiner inzwischen zum Standardwerk der Soziologie des Körpers avancierten Arbeit, wie immer mehr Menschen im Rahmen von Sport, Freizeit, Mode, Gesundheitsorientierung oder Protestkultur auf ihre physisch-organische Nahwelt zurückgreifen, um die überfordernden Konsequenzen des gesellschaftlichen Modernisierungsprozesses abzufangen oder kritisch zu kommentieren. Die zentrale Perspektive der Arbeit wendet sich ab von der nostalgischen und zu einfach konzipierten Lehre vom reinen Verlust des Körpers in der Moderne und betont stattdessen die paradoxe Gleichzeitigkeit von Körperdistanzierung und Körperaufwertung im Verlauf der sozio-kulturellen Evolution. Die Arbeit thematisiert damit nicht nur Zeichen, die die Gesellschaft am Körper setzt, sondern folgt auch jenen Spuren, die der Körper in Gestalt körperorientierter Sozialsysteme und Semantiken in der Gesellschaft hinterlässt. Karl-Heinrich Bette's work, which has meanwhile become the standard work in the sociology of the body, shows how more and more people are resorting to their physical-organic environment in the context of sport, leisure, fashion, health orientation or protest culture in order to intercept or critically comment on the overburdening consequences of the process of social modernization. The central perspective of the work turns away from the nostalgic and too simply conceived doctrine of the pure loss of the body in modernity and instead emphasizes the paradoxical simultaneity of body distance and body enhancement in the course of socio-cultural evolution.     Description: Digital technologies shape our embodied lives and affect our knowledge of the self and the world. The introductory chapter of the book presents the state of the art in the research on digitalisation of health and social care work, with a focus on care for older people. In ageing societies, understanding what it takes to introduce and use digital technologies can pave the way to a successful, sustainable, and equally accessible system of social care and healthcare provision for older people. The chapter discusses some of the limitations in the present discussion and how the book at hand aims to address these gaps. The chapter proposes that living in an increasingly digitalised world requires digital agency, that is the individual’s ability to control and adapt to their surroundings, and to critically address technological determinism in the everyday life. The chapter ends with an overview of the book’s subsequent chapters that demonstrate different aspects to service users’ and care workers’ digital agency based on recent studies of digital technologies in care for older people.

    Description: Seit fast 40 Jahren wird der Sicherheitsdiskurs durch die gegenläufige Bezugnahme von Innerer Sicherheitspolitik und linker Kritik geprägt. Letztere galt im Sicherheitsdiskurs über lange Jahre hinweg selbst als Feindbild. Erstmals rückt diese kritische Position nun in den Mittelpunkt der Forschung. Aus diskursanalytischer Perspektive untersucht der Autor konservative und kritische Positionen zu Innerer Sicherheit - und kommt zu überraschenden Befunden: Trotz ihrer vordergründigen politischen Gegenläufigkeit sind auffällige Gemeinsamkeiten und geteilte Grundannahmen feststellbar. Zudem werden im Sicherheitsdiskurs gegenwärtig sog. Fremde bzw. "kriminelle Ausländer" als Hauptfeindbilder mobilisiert, d.h. Konstruktionen, die wesentlich rassistisch fundiert sind. Angesichts jener bereits angesprochenen Gemeinsamkeiten lautet deshalb eine weitere zentrale Frage, ob bzw. inwieweit die heutige Kritik an Innerer Sicherheitspolitik diesen Feindbildwandel berücksichtigt.
