    Description: "To this day, the history of international law is dominated by a Eurocentric historiography in which non-European worlds play a passive role at best. Master narratives of universalisation and progress may include their histories; however, they appear not in the form of actors, but as mere receivers. By analysing the first Hispano-American textbook on international law, this transdisciplinary study questions this narrative of passivity. In his compendium, published in 1833, the Chilean polymath Andrés Bello translated European doctrines of international law for use in the context of the “New World”. Using a postcolonial approach, the study demonstrates that the imitation of the European discourse on international law was not a purely passive and submissive act, but deeply ambivalent behaviour which opens up a space for resistance and is reminiscent of Homi K. Bhabha’s concept of mimicry."

    Description: Against the background of the Ürümchi riots (July 2009), this book provides a longitudinal study of contemporary Uyghur identities and Uyghur-Han relations. Previous studies considered China’s Uyghurs from the perspective of the majority Han (state or people). Conversely, The Art of Symbolic Resistance considers Uyghur identities from a local perspective, based on interviews conducted with group members over nearly twenty years. Smith Finley rejects assertions that the Uyghur ethnic group is a ‘creation of the Chinese state’, suggesting that contemporary Uyghur identities involve a complex interplay between long-standing intra-group socio-cultural commonalities and a more recently evolved sense of common enmity towards the Han. This book advances the discipline in three senses: from a focus on sporadic violent opposition to one on everyday symbolic resistance; from state to ‘local’ representations; and from a conceptualisation of Uyghurs as ‘victim’ to one of ‘creative agent’.

    Description: The Archive of the Sacromonte Abbey in Granada preserves a historical treasure: Arabic texts on a sheet of parchment and on numerous small tablets of lead, which were discovered in Granada at the end of the sixteenth century in the tower of the old Friday Mosque and in caves of the "Valparaíso" hillock, from then on called "Sacromonte". They became the object of heated discussions in Europe and were condemned by the Pope in 1682. The texts are among the very last literary productions of the Moriscos, the Andalusi Muslims, many of whom continued to practice Islam in secret until their expulsion from Spain between 1609 and 1614. With the permission of the archbishop of Granada, we offer, for the first time in history, a study, edition, translation, and images of all the tablets and shed new light on the fascinating religious messages of these enigmatic texts and their authors.

    Description: What would an alternative to contemporary capitalism look like? In this book, Geert Reuten sets out a detailed design of a democratic society organised in worker cooperatives, followed by an equally detailed democratic transition to it, thereby making a convincing case. In Reuten’s design, Workers constitute the single economic class. However, unlike in capitalism, there is no class that owns the means of production. The legal structure of worker cooperatives is such that workers have full rights to the fruits of the cooperative without owning it, and yet the state does not own the cooperatives either. Interestingly, worker councils in the economic and state domains vote on all economically relevant matters. In Reuten’s work, the free choice of occupation and of specific consumer goods is even larger than in capitalism.

Umwälzender ist jedoch der existenzphilosophische Neuansatz, den Rosenzweig mit seinem Hauptwerk "Der Stern der Erlösung" (1921) vorlegte. Es ist dies nicht nur eines der bedeutenden theologischen Werke des 20. Jahrhunderts, dessen Herausforderung - wenn auch verspätet - von den christlichen Kirchen heute mehr und mehr erkannt und aufgenommen wird, sondern das ihm zugrunde liegende Neue Denken ist auch in fundamentaltheologischer Hinsicht von einschneidender Bedeutung. An der kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Deutschen Idealismus gereift, wirft Rosenzweig die grundlegenden Fragen nach der negativen Begrenztheit unseres Denkens, dem existentiellen Grund unseres Daseins, nach dessen Zeitlichkeit und Sprachlichkeit sowie nach dem Anderen und dem Wir der Gemeinschaft auf - Fragen, die auch heute noch die philosophische Gegenwartsdiskussion bestimmen.     Description: Während der alltägliche Umgang mit anderen Menschen in aller Regel gelingt, wird der Andere der philosophischen Reflexion zum Problem: er widersetzt sich jeder Konstitution durch das transzendentale Subjekt. Fast scheint es, als zerstöre die Reflexion hier die Unmittelbarkeit, mit der uns der Andere phänomenal begegnet. Der Autor unternimmt im vorliegenden Werk eine kleistsche 'Reise um die Welt' entlang der Denkwege bedeutender Autoren der existenzphilosophischen Phänomenologie: Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre und Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Es gelingt ihm zu zeigen, dass die Problematik des Anderen in der Reflexion bei den besprochenen Autoren eine sich stetig vertiefende Umformung erfährt, die es ermöglicht, den Anderen und die Reflexion als Analogien einer tiefer liegenden Problematik zu begreifen. Die Reflexion erweist sich dabei letztlich nicht als Zerstörer einer alltäglich immer funktionierenden Unmittelbarkeit, sondern als Wegweiser in die Tiefen dessen, was wir Existenz nennen. Das Problem des Anderen wird hierbei nicht 'gelöst', es bedarf auch gar keiner Auflösung, wenn man begreift, dass die Unzugänglichkeit des Anderen nur die Kehrseite der Unzugänglichkeit des eigenen Selbst ist. Der Andere ist letztlich nicht mehr und nicht weniger rätselhaft als ich selbst es bin, und gerade in dieser Dunkelheit liegt das Wesen der Existenz.

Dazu verpflichten nicht zuletzt die Vorgaben der UN-Behindertenrechtskonvention. Das anwendungs-orientierte Forschungsprojekt „Selbstbestimmt teilhaben in Altenpflegeeinrichtungen“ hat Voraussetzungen zur Verwirklichung der selbstbestimmten Teilhabe von Bewohner*innen in stationären Einrichtungen der Altenhilfe analysiert. Im Rahmen einer sequentiellen Mixed-Methods-Studie wurden u. a. Interviews mit Bewohner*innen, Angehörigen und Mitarbeiter*innen sowie teilnehmende Beobachtungen in ausgewählten Einrichtungen und eine NRW-weite Online-Befragung durchgeführt. So konnten erstmals fördernde und hemmende Faktoren auf Ebene der Bewohner*innen, Mitarbeiter*innen und Einrichtung identifiziert und wichtige Anforderungen an die Teilhabeförderung praxisnah in einem Musterrahmenkonzept aufbereitet werden. Abstract Elderly residents of nursing homes do not only have the right to receive high-quality medical and nursing care, but also and explicitly to lead an autonomous life that enables them to partic-ipate in society. This right is not least stipulated in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The application-based research project ‘Autonomous Participation in Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly’ analysed the prerequisites for realising elderly residents’ autonomous participation in their nursing homes. Within the framework of a sequential mixed methods study, the researchers conducted interviews with such residents, their relatives and care home staff, participatory observations in selected nursing homes and an online survey throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. As a result, they were able to identify factors which facilitate and restrict such participation from the perspectives of the residents, staff and the care home itself for the first time, and thus stipulate important requirements for the facilitation and implementation of participation within a framework model.

The Sino-Tibetan languages Kinnauri and Navakat and the Indo-Aryan language Kinnauri Pahari, all spoken in Kinnaur, are described both individually and as parts of a multifaceted linguistic ecology that extends into the surrounding wider Himalayan region. This book sketches the growth of Christianity during the Portuguese period (1511-1605), it presents a fair account of developments under the Dutch colonial administration (1605-1942) and is more elaborate for the period of the Indonesian Republic (since 1945). Muslim-Christian relations, as well as the tensions between foreign missionaries and local theology, receive special attention.

Turkey’s autocratisation has led not only to strained interstate relations but to a deterioration of the social climate in Germany as a country of immigration. In addition, the issues of xenophobia and racism in Germany have repeatedly been raised. It can be assumed that the interplay between perceived discrimination in Germany and Erdoğan’s popularity as a self-styled ‘lawyer for Turks’ in Germany has resulted in greater susceptibility to populist promises and Turkish-nationalist identity-building. This empirical study examines how political views influence migration-related decisions of successor generations among people of Turkish origin in North Rhine-Westphalia who intend to (re)settle in Turkey.

Die Autokratisierung der Türkei führte nicht nur zur Belastung der zwischenstaatlichen Beziehungen, sondern auch des gesellschaftlichen Kimas im Einwanderungsland Deutschland. Zugleich stellte sich wiederholt die Frage nach Fremdenfeindlichkeit und Rassismus in Deutschland. Dabei ist anzunehmen, dass Wechselwirkungen zwischen der Wahrnehmung von Benachteiligung in Deutschland und dem Zuspruch zu Erdoğan und seiner Inszenierung als „Anwalt der TürkInnen“ in Deutschland möglicherweise anfällig für populistische Versprechungen und türkisch-nationalistische Identitätsstiftung machen. Die empirische Studie untersucht den Einfluss politischer Einstellungen auf Migrationsentscheidungen Türkeistämmiger der Nachfolgegenerationen in Nordrhein-Westfalen, die in die Türkei übersiedeln wollen.

While cases of stigmatisation had been reported since the thirteenth century, this era witnessed the development of the ‘stigmatic’: young women who attracted widespread interest thanks to the appearance of physical stigmata. To understand the popularity of these stigmatics we need to regard them as the ‘saints’ and religious ‘celebrities’ of their time. With their ‘miraculous’ bodies, they fit contemporary popular ideas (if not necessarily those of the Church) of what sanctity was.     Description: The book is an analysis of the portrayal of nuclear power in Japanese journalism and the factors influencing it. Combining a field theoretical approach to journalism with frame analysis on different levels of the communica-tion process, the author argues that the nuclear industry in Japan used their financial power to build up a “pro-nuclear civil society” and that this frame-sponsoring is the reason for the relatively positive portrayal of nucle-ar power until 2011. After “Fukushima” the journalistic autonomy in this domain increased and journalism became a driving force of change in nuclear policy. At the same time the journalistic field became polarized because the more heteronomous parts of the field remain integrated into the “pronuclear civil society”. The book offers a new perspective on Japanese media and journalism scholarship, emphasizing heterogeneity and change in contrast to previous scholarship, that has focused on press clubs as institutions of pervasive media control.

Analysing and de-constructing implicitly constructed images of pupils is suggested as a promising tool to contribute to a higher level of self-reflective elements in Religious Education praxis and theory. Diese Untersuchung verfolgt das Ziel, die Kategorie des Schülerbildes in den religionspädagogischen Diskurs einzuführen. Es wird gefragt, inwiefern konstruktivistisch geprägte Erkenntnisprozesse nicht auch hinsichtlich der – bislang vernachlässigten – Frage, wie Religionspädagog:innen in Theorie und Praxis über Schüler:innen denken und welches implizite Schülerbild somit meist unbewusst konstruiert wird, eine Rolle spielen. Im Sinne einer Heuristik werden Dimensionen herausgearbeitet, die den Konstruktionsprozess eines Schülerbildes maßgeblich mitbeeinflussen. Es wird untersucht, inwiefern ein Schülerbild im Kontext religionspädagogischer und -didaktischer Vollzüge wirksam ist und daher als ein Impetus zur Selbstreflexion wahrgenommen werden sollte. Zu diesem Zweck werden ausgewählte religionspädagogische Entwürfe hinsichtlich ihres jeweiligen Schülerbildes analysiert und die religionspädagogische Bedeutung des Schülerbildes anhand einer fünffachen Kategorisierung konkretisiert.

    Description: The Spanish colonization dramatically interrupted the autonomous development of ancient Mesoamerican culture. Nevertheless, indigenous societies learnt to live with the conquest. It was not only a time of crisis, but also an extraordinarily creative time period in which material culture reflected indigenous peoples’ varied responses and adaptations to the changing circumstances. This work presents insights into the process of cultural continuity and change in the indigenous world by focusing on pottery technology in the Nahua (Aztec) region of Central Mexico. The late pre-colonial, early colonial and present-day characteristics of this industry are explored in order to come to a renewed understanding of its long-term development.

Im Vortrag „Bemerkungen zur Metapher“ (1937) entfaltet König den Gedanken, dass diejenige metaphorische Rede, die nicht ein im Prinzip ersetzbares Additum zur nicht-metaphorischen ist, eine wesentliche Möglichkeit der menschlichen Sprache darstellt. Sie kommt zwar zur nicht-metaphorischen Rede hinzu, aber wesentlich hinzu und konstituiert dadurch das Einssein der Sprache. Der zweistündige Vortrag „Verantwortung in der Wissenschaft“ (1952) erörtert den Begriff von Wissenschaft in Verbindung mit dem eines wissenschaftlichen Gewissens, das „anschaffbar“ ist, und legt die Eigenart der sittlichen Natur des wissenschaftlichen Wissens dar. Im Vortrag „Probleme des Begriffs Entwicklung“ (1958) geht König der Frage nach, wie prinzipiell begriffen werden kann, dass ein Wesen, das abstammt von Wesen, denen lediglich äußere Wahrnehmung zugeschrieben werden kann, zu einem Wesen werden kann, das auch innere Wahrnehmung besitzt.

    Description: The Kakawin Ramayana, arguably the oldest Old Javanese epic text in Indic metres (circa 9th century AD), holds a unique position in the literary heritage of Indonesia. The poem has retained a remarkable vitality through the centuries in the Archipelago, inspiring many forms of artistic expression not only in the domain of literature but also in the visual and performing arts, from the reliefs of the majestic Central Javanese temples to modern puppet-show performances. Displaying a virtuoso array of metrical patterns, the Kakawin Ramayana is among the very few Old Javanese texts for which a specific Sanskrit prototype has been identified, namely the difficult poem Bhattikavya (circa 7th century AD), itself a version of the great Ramayana epic ascribed to Valmiki (circa 6th–1st century BC). The Old Javanese poem is an original and skillful work of re-elaboration that documents a fascinating interaction between cultural elements of the Sanskritic tradition with those indigenous to the Javanese setting. The studies included in this volume, written by experts in a wide range of disciplines, focus on disparate aspects of the Kakawin Ramayana and the constellation of cultural phenomena revolving around it, providing the reader with a key to the understanding of the rich Old Javanese textual heritage and the transcultural intellectual dynamics that contributed to shaping the cultural heritage of Indonesia up to the present.     Description: In Authoritarian Modernization in Indonesia’s Early Independence Period, Farabi Fakih offers a historical analysis of the foundational years leading to Indonesia’s New Order state (1966–1998) during the early independence period. The study looks into the structural and ideological state formation during the so-called Liberal Democracy (1950–1957) and Sukarno’s Guided Democracy (1957–1965). In particular, it analyses how the international technical aid network and the dominant managerialist ideology of the period legitimized a new managerial elite. The book discusses the development of managerial education in the civil and military sectors in Indonesia. The study gives a strongly backed argument that Sukarno’s constitutional reform during the Guided Democracy period inadvertently provided a strong managerial blueprint for the New Order developmentalist state.     Description: This book investigates lifecycle management strategies used by pharmaceutical companies attempting to maximize the value of their product portfolio. Such strategies are sometimes referred to by generic drug companies as “evergreening”. The analysis focuses on two of these strategies, namely product improvements and product line extensions. In particular, an evaluation of the patents that follow the basic one and that accompany the development of a drug from research to market is attempted. Two “blockbuster” drugs, Taxotere and Xalatan, were randomly chosen to carry out such analysis. The patent portfolio of the originator companies is outlined and some important patents for each area of research (e.g. formulations, combinations, delivery devices) are shortly described. Patent filing trends for the two drugs, both in regards of the originator and in regards of other competing companies (amongst these also the generics) are schematically shown.
