Kurzfassung: Rising concern about climate change and strong societal expectations with increasing complexities of mineral deposits being mined, call for more innovative exploration and exploitation technologies with higher productivity and recovery including eco-friendly strategies and policies in place for long term sustainability of the mineral Industry. It is now ardently necessary to identify and define the best mining practices addressing societal needs. In view of these, The Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI), established way back on 16th January 1906, and one of the oldest institutions of this kind in the world, is organizing the 10th Asian Mining Congress (AMC) during November 06-09, 2023 in Kolkata, India with the Theme, “Roadmap for Best Mining Practices vis-à-vis Global Transformation”. The AMC and International Mining Exhibition (IME), held concurrently, are flagship international events organized by MGMI biennially since its centenary year. This series have provided ample opportunities to all stakeholders including practicing engineers, machinery manufacturers, planners, regulators, academicians, scientists and policy makers, for sharing their knowledge, experience and expertise and exhibit their products that can benefit the mining and mineral industries not only in the Asian region but also globally. This proceeding of 10th AMC contains the articles written by eminent persons and stalwarts in their respective domains. It is a collection of contemporary articles narrating recent advancements in mining sector.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Geoethics to face natural risks by improving societal resilience -- Multi-hazards risk assessment at the Canary Islands -- Risk-informed decision-making on volcanic hazards -- Geoethics: the missing piece in the separation of responsibility between volcanologists and decision-makers -- Earthquakes, volcanoes and God: changing perspectives on the importance of religion as an important influence in cultural responses -- Toward a multi-hazard assessment at Etna volcano (Italy): the PANACEA project -- From multi-hazard to multi-risk at Mount Etna: approaches and strategies of the PANACEA project -- The Role of the individual in successful disaster management in pre-industrial societies: the cases of the Southern Italy and the Azores -- Historical volcanism as a source of knowledge to assess the vulnerability of population settlements in the Azores: some thoughts -- A proposal for systematization of vulnerability elements and parameters in volcanic risk assessment.
Kurzfassung: This book comprises the selected proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Natural Hazards (NATHAZ’22), Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island, Azores, 2022. The book interests all researchers and practitioners in Earth Sciences, Volcanic Risks, Natural Hazards, Geoethics, Environmental Sciences and Engineering. Terceira is a volcanic island with volcanic systems with caldera (Cinco Picos, Guilherme Moniz, Santa Bárbara and Pico Alto central volcanoes) and an active fissural zone defined by various alignments of small volcanic cones, lava domes and fault zones. The agricultural landscape, the natural and forest reserve, as well as the natural pools make the island a unique place to visit. The historic downtown of Angra do Heroísmo is a UNESCO world heritage, and several iconic buildings witness the island’s geodynamic history. Natural hazards result from a threat of a naturally occurring event that will have a negative effect on humans. That damaging effect is often called natural disasters. Among the natural hazards and potential disasters to be considered are: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, subsidence, floods, droughts and coastal erosion. In addition, anthropogenic hazards occur as a result of human interaction with the environment. They comprise technological risks due to exposure to hazardous substances in the environment. Natural systems in different frameworks require a comprehensive understanding of climatology, geology, hydrology and volcanic data, processes and dynamics. Thus, it is important to perform hazard and risk assessment studies to accomplish hazard mitigation. In addition, it highlighted the role of variability and climate change in Earth systems. Furthermore, an accurate understanding of the natural systems and interactions with engineering, geodiversity and natural resources is vital to the entire socioeconomic sector. This book is expected to offer an overview of natural hazards in model regions in Europe, America, Asia and the Atlantic islands. It gives new insights into the characterization, assessment, protection, and modelling of geological hazards, volcanic systems, urban areas, coastal zones and engineering approaches by international researchers and professionals. The scientific committee comprises lead geoscientists, natural hazards related practitioners, and academics worldwide. The main topics include: 1. Multi-hazards and risks: sustainable society, disasters and geoethics 2. Natural hazards and assessment: rock falls, landslides, urban planning and management 3. Sustainable Earth systems: hazards and climate change 4. Terceira Island geology and geodiversity: meeting volcanological hazards in the Azores.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Chapter 1. Introduction -- Chapter 2. Tipping Points: A Survey of the Literature -- Chapter 3. Governance & Resilience: A Stakeholder Agency Perspective -- Chapter 4. Spatial Determinants of Tipping Points Governance: Beyond Stakeholder Agency -- Chapter 5. Governing Social Tipping Points in the EU’s Periphery: A Conceptual Framework & Methodology -- Chapter 6. Resilience in Migration, Climate Change and Geopolitics: A Case of the EU’s Periphery -- Chapter 7. Resilience of the EU’s Periphery vis-à-vis Social Tipping Points: Policy Recommendations -- Chapter 8. Conclusion.
Kurzfassung: This monograph assesses the intersections between social tipping points (STP), a relatively understudied social-ecological concept, and various public policy concepts, such as governance, state capacity and resilience of the state and non-state actors, all within the context of the EU Eastern and Southern periphery. This unique approach is subsequently embodied in the newly created conceptual framework of how the STPs are governed and analyzed using three case studies. The goal is to examine how various state and non-state actors (transnational, private, and local) have managed to navigate the STPs triggered by migration, climate change, and geopolitics. The multi-level governance of STPs is studied within the context of the EU periphery, thus spatial and geographical determinants of the resilience are analyzed as well.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Geological Approaches to the Coast -- Coastal Processes -- Coastal Systems: Dynamics and Sedimentary Sequences -- Coastal Evolution on a Geological Time Frame -- The Humans in the Coast: Interaction Problems and Coastal Management -- Final Remarks. .
Kurzfassung: This textbook shows all the existing knowledge about coastal geology and its implications for coastal management. In the last decades, the geological sciences have been supplying exciting information about the coastal systems, not only from its dynamics but also providing a sedimentary concept to understand and interpret the preserved coastal stratigraphical record. Furthermore, recent investigations have been focused on the prevention of coastal hazards like storms, tsunamis, or sea-level fluctuation. This discipline has an increasing interest after the expanding human activities around the coasts worldwide. The present trend is that many of the problems raised by the coast–human interaction must be resolved by using the Integrated Coastal Zone Management. The chapters of this book have a double-level structure. The first part of each chapter contains the necessary information for undergraduate courses studying coastal geology. The second part includes advanced information and examples to be used by graduate students and novel professionals.
