Description / Table of Contents: 1972 erschütterte ein Buch die Fortschrittsgläubigkeit der Welt: »Die Grenzen des Wachstums«.

Description / Table of Contents: "Organization Theories in the Making aims to demonstrate how, over the last 25 years, the field of organization theories (OTs) has been providing stimulating, thoughtful, and innovative perspectives. The book offers a selective immersion in organizational institutionalism, convention analysis, network analysis, knowledge studies, discourse studies, and practice studies. For each of these perspectives, the book explores its different research streams and zooms in the research communities that give rise to them. In addition, it highlights how these perspectives all intersect with each other to form a mosaic of ideas that define today's organizations. Rouleau also invites graduate students and early career researchers to learn how recent theories view and portray the organization and, more specifically, to understand current research questions, conceptual resources, and methods. A deep knowledge of recent OTs is key when building a compelling literature review and making meaningful theoretical contributions. This book offers readers with the opportunity to develop their theory-building skills and more by taking a deep dive in the complexities and controversies of OTs. The main arguments of each perspective are illustrated by specific exemplars from academic journals. Each chapter contains a synoptic table summarizing the main scholarly components within each perspective and its research substreams"--

Description / Table of Contents: This contributed volume book aims at discussing transdisciplinary approaches to address common problems. By working transdisciplinarily, researchers coming from different disciplines can work jointly using a shared conceptual framework bringing together disciplinary-specific theories and concepts. There are numerous barriers that can obstruct effective communication between different cultures, communities, religions and geographies. This book shows that through bringing together different disciplines, researchers not only can surpass these barriers but can effectively produce new venues of thought that can positively affect the development and evolution of research and education. The book discusses new and emerging applications of knowledge produced by transdisciplinary efforts and covers the interplay of many disciplines, including agriculture, economics, mathematics, engineering, industry, information technology, marketing, nanoscience, neuroscience, space exploration, human-animal relationships, among others. Consequently, it also covers the relationship between art and science, as one of the most remarkable transdisciplinary approaches that paves the way for new methods in engineering, design, architecture and many other fields. .

Description / Table of Contents: Introduction : the European Union, decarbonisation and foreign policy -- Nigeria : addressing fragility away from oil? -- Indonesia : building a partnership beyond fossil fuels and palm oil -- Azerbaijan : partnership potential beyond gas? -- Colombia : the double challenge of internal pacification and decarbonisation -- Qatar : moving beyond oil and gas within a fragile regional context -- Canada : reframing a well-established partnership -- Conclusions : challenges and opportunities for EU foreign policy and its analysis in an era of decarbonisation.
Description / Table of Contents: "Contributing to the emerging literature on the geopolitical and foreign policy implications of decarbonisation and energy transition processes, this book sheds light on the future of the European Union's external relations under decarbonisation. Under the Paris Agreement on climate change, adopted in 2015, governments committed to phasing out the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases over the coming decades. This book addresses the many questions around this process of decarbonisation through detailed analyses of EU external relations with six fossil-fuel exporting countries: Nigeria, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Colombia, Qatar and Canada. The authors systematically examine the six countries' varying dependence on fossil fuels, the broader political and security context, current relations with the EU and the potential for developing these toward decarbonisation. In doing so, they put forward a series of findings that should hold across varying circumstances and provide a steppingstone to enrich and inspire further research on foreign policy, external relations and international relations under decarbonisation. The book also makes an important contribution to understanding the external implications of the 2019 European Green Deal. This volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of European environmental and climate policy, climate diplomacy, energy policy, foreign policy and climate/energy geopolitics."

    Call number: IASS 22.94728
Description / Table of Contents: "This handbook provides comprehensive and critical coverage of the lively and complex relationship between democracy and sustainability in contemporary theory, discourse, and practice. Distinguished scholars from different disciplines look at the present state of this relationship, asking how it has evolved and where it is likely to go in the future. In addition, they examine compatibilities and tensions, convergences and divergences, continuities and changes, as well as challenges and potentials not just on the level of theory but also in various empirical fields and practical contexts. There is an established and vibrant debate on the relationship between democracy and ustainability. Indeed, democracy's role in and potential for coping with global and local environmental threats has been subject to scientific analysis and political argumentation for several decades now. Yet this debate has been rather fragmented and diffuse. It comprises theoretical, empirical, and practical contributions from different disciplines, which adopt diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives and address different problem areas and levels of political action. By covering this debate in its entirety, this handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the diversity of arguments, claims, questions, and insights that are put forward regarding the relationship between democracy and sustainability. In the process, it not only consolidates and condenses, but also broadens and captures the many nuances of the debate on sustainability and democracy. By showing how theoretical, empirical and practical accounts are interrelated and focussing on diverse problem areas and spheres of action, this handbook serves as a knowledge source for professionals who seek to develop action strategies that do justice to both sustainability and democracy, as well as providing a valuable resource for academic researchers, lecturers and students."

Description / Table of Contents: Höchstens 1,5 Grad Erderwärmung: Dieses Ziel wurde 2015 auf dem Klimagipfel von Paris formuliert.

Description / Table of Contents: Chapter 1. Introduction -- Chapter 2. Liquid Institutionalization -- Chapter 3. Arctic Shipping -- Chapter 4. Deep Seabed Mining -- Chapter 5. Transboundary regionalization at European seas -- Chapter 6. Conclusions and Reflections.
Description / Table of Contents: This book presents an innovative theory of liquid institutionalization at sea and explores the building blocks of this theory focusing in particular on institutionalization, blue governance arrangements, reflexivity and power. The book opens with an overview of stability and change in new institutional theory before moving on to discuss liquid institutionalization in more detail. The author applies this approach to three different cases: Arctic shipping; deep seabed mining; and transboundary regionalization in Europe. For each of these cases the book describes the emerging blue governance arrangements, the type of liquid institutionalization and the consequences this has for power and reflexivity. Jan P.M. van Tatenhove holds a PhD in Sociology. He is Professor of Marine Governance and Maritime Spatial Planning at the Centre for Blue Governance at Aalborg University (Aalborg, Denmark) and Applied Research Professor Coastal & Marine Systems at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences (Leeuwarden, the Netherlands). .

Description / Table of Contents: "One of the most stunning achievements of moral philosophy is something we take for granted: moral universalism, or the idea that every human has equal moral worth. In What We Owe the Future, Oxford philosopher William MacAskill demands that we go a step further, arguing that people not only have equal moral worth no matter where or how they live, but also no matter when they live. This idea has implications beyond the obvious (climate change) - including literally making sure that there are people in the future: It's not unusual to hear someone way, "Oh, I could never bring a child into this world." MacAskill argues that the sentiment itself may well be immoral: we have a responsibility not just to consider whether the world of the future will be suitable for supporting humans, but to act to make sure there are humans in it. And while it may seem that the destructive capacity of modern industrial technology means that we ought to eschew it as much as possible, MacAskill argues for optimism in our ability to (eventually) get technology right, for the future's benefit, and ours. Where Hans Rosling's Factfulness and Rutger Bregman's Utopia for Realists gave us reasons for hope and action in the present, What We Owe the Future is a compelling and accessible argument for why solving our problems demands that we worry about the future. And ultimately it provides an answer to the most important question we humans face: can we not just endure, but thrive?"--

Description / Table of Contents: "Many mistakenly believe that it is fruitless to try to persuade those who disagree with them about politics. However, Persuasion in Parallel shows that individuals do, in fact, change their minds in response to information, with partisans on either side of the political aisle updating their views roughly in parallel. This book challenges the dominant view that persuasive information can often backfire because people are supposedly motivated to reason against information they dislike. Drawing on evidence from a series of randomized controlled trials, the book shows that the backfire response is rare to nonexistent. Instead, it shows that most everyone updates in the direction of information, at least a little bit. The political upshot of this work is that the other side is not lost. Even messages we don't like can move us in the right direction"--

Description / Table of Contents: "Can the world stop climate change? The prognosis is bleak. Most efforts to tackle the problem have focused on treaties that require virtually global consensus, yet meaningful consensus has been elusive because deep cuts in emissions are expensive and antagonize well-organized interests. Predictably, diplomacy has swung between gridlock and superficial agreements with little impact. After three decades of sustained negotiations on global warming, emissions have risen by one third. Stopping climate warming requires that they be cut essentially to zero. Sabel and Victor look to offer a case for optimism by proposing a different strategy: to recast climate change as a problem best addressed piecemeal. Rather than seeking a grand, global bargain, they argue that the problem should be broken down into local challenges. They call this concept "experimentalist governance"-massive simultaneous searches for local solutions that are scalable to the global level, with a focus not on marginal incentives for success but on penalties for repeated, egregious failure. The authors show, through a series of cases, how regulators, firms, farms and NGOs, faced with penalty defaults, are learning to solve some of the knottiest environmental problems; they then propose central mechanisms that could help monitor and review progress, establishing which experiments are working and establish new frontiers for experimentation. While the threat of impending catastrophe has understandably made debate about climate policy increasingly shrill and polarized, Sabel and Victor offer here a guide to institutional design that could finally lead to the politically and economically self-sustaining reductions in emissions that thirty years of global diplomacy has not delivered."--
Description / Table of Contents: "A compelling argument for solving the global climate crisis through local partnerships and experimentation. Global climate diplomacy-from the Kyoto Protocol to the Paris Agreement-is not working. Despite decades of sustained negotiations by world leaders, the climate crisis continues to worsen. The solution is within our grasp-but we will not achieve it through top-down global treaties or grand bargains among nations.Charles Sabel and David Victor explain why the profound transformations needed for deep cuts in emissions must arise locally, with government and business working together to experiment with new technologies, quickly learn the best solutions, and spread that information globally. Sabel and Victor show how some of the most iconic successes in environmental policy were products of this experimentalist approach to problem solving, such as the Montreal Protocol on the ozone layer, the rise of electric vehicles, and Europe's success in controlling water pollution. They argue that the Paris Agreement is at best an umbrella under which local experimentation can push the technological frontier and help societies around the world learn how to deploy the technologies and policies needed to tackle this daunting global problem.A visionary book that fundamentally reorients our thinking about the climate crisis, Fixing the Climate is a road map to institutional design that can finally lead to self-sustaining reductions in emissions that years of global diplomacy have failed to deliver."--
