Description / Table of Contents: In science, technology, and medicine one is constantly confronted with the necessity to interprete measurements. Such interpretation is particularly difficult in geophysics, medicine, and astrophysics. The problem is here to determine, on the basis of the measured data, internal parameters inaccessible to measurement. Such problems are briefly called inverse problems; in medicine and technology the term diagnostics is also frequently used. Inverse problems are rarely easy, usually difficult, sometimes unsolvable, but always fascinating. Since 1980 great progress has been made in inverse problems. The volume presents the general results of a unique attempt to bring together mathematicians and specialists from many fields of applications. Inverse problems may be considered among the pressing problems of current mathematical research. Fundamental research for such problems is highly necessary.
