Description / Table of Contents: Pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating of lake sediment cores from four localities in the Frederikshåb district, South-West Greenland, provide a chronology of vegetation changes in the area since c. 1000 B. P. An initial pioneer phase with the early development of some heath communities followed by a mid postglacial phase in which there is the successive appearance of woody scrub species. A final phase shows the decline of some of these. This is interpreted as a general response to a broad amplitude fluctuation in climate, with its optimal period lying between c. 7600 and 3200 B.P. The detailed composition of the vegetation however is influenced by immigration phenomena, with the appearance of many species lagging behind the attainment of their climatic tresholds. Detailed consideration is given to the possibility of Alnus crispa being present as a scrub component during the climatic optimum.

Description / Table of Contents: Post-Wisconsinian uplift of West, North and East Greenland has been estimated on the basis of information in current literature and compared to the data collected by the author in central West Greenland. For West and North Greenland the dated uplift allows an estimate to be made of the age of former shore-lines, which in turn have been used to date the stages of the extent of the Inland Ice. The results have been compared with published information on the age of glacial stages in East Greenland. The estimated ages of the ice margin stages imply a history of deglaciation in West (and North?) Greenland comparable to that of North America. In both areas the major deglaciation took place after the Younger Dryas and a marked halt took place in Boreal times. It is possible that the history of East Greenland is more closely related to that of Scandinavia where a widespread deglaciation took place prior to the Younger Dryas. The deglaciation of North Greenland was interrupted by a marked readvance or readvances during the climatic optimum. It is possible that the northward shift of the low pressure centres during this period led to an increased accumulation on the northern part of the Inland Ice.

In: A magnetic survey of North-East Trinity Peninsula, Graham Land
Description / Table of Contents: An area of about 200 square miles, covering Tabarin Peninsula and Duse Bay in the north-eastern part of the Graham Land peninsula, has been surveyed with a vertical intensity magnetometer, with the object of delineating bodies of the Andean Intrusive Suite and determining the nature of the contact between the mid-Miocene James Ross Island Volcanic Group and the ? Carboniferous sediments of the Trinity Peninsula Series. The outcrops of intrusive diorite in the northern half of Tabarin Peninsula are shown to be parts of a single intrusive body, extending over the width of the peninsula and as far south as the volcanic outcrops of Buttress Hill and Brown Bluff and northward at least as far as Mount Taylor and Blade Ridge. Three configurations of the intrusive body which explain the observed magnetic anomalies are given; the most likely from the intrusion is that of a laccolith. The magnetic anomalies over the volcanic rocks are attributed to basalt lava flows of both normal and reversed magnetizations. Some evidence is given which suggests that the James Ross Island Volcanic Group is at least 4,000 ft. thick, but it has not been possible to determine the nature of the contact between the volcanics and the sediments in southern Tabarin Peninsula or in Duse Bay.

In: The Geology of the South Shetland Islands
Description / Table of Contents: Decption Island is a caldera formed by the subsidence of a group of overlapping volcanoes along arcuate and radial faults. Three volcanic episodes occured after the formation of the caldera and the location of those post-caldera volcanoes is controlled by the fault pattern which limits the caldera. Although it is possible to establish the relative ages of the four volcanic episodes, there is little information as to their absolute ages. It is probable that the latest eruptions occurred in historic times. Petrographically the Deception Island suite is a local alkaline deviation from the normal andesite-rhyolite association of the South Shetland Islands. Its lavas are characterized by an unusually high soda content. The sequence of crystallization is analogous to that of melts of certain composition in the system MgO-FeO-SiO2 crystallizing under conditions of strong fractionation. The geochemistry of the Deception Island volcanic rocks is reviewed and four new chemical analyses are presented.
