Description / Table of Contents: This book is a useful guide for researchers in ecology and earth science interested in the use of accelerator mass spectrometry technology. The development of research in radiocarbon measurements offers an opportunity to address the human impact on global carbon cycling and climate change. Presenting radiocarbon theory, history, applications, and analytical techniques in one volume builds a broad outline of the field of radiocarbon and its emergent role in defining changes in the global carbon cycle and links to climate change. Each chapter presents both classic and cutting-edge studies from different disciplines involving radiocarbon and carbon cycling. The book also includes a chapter on the history and discovery of radiocarbon, and advances in radiocarbon measurement techniques and radiocarbon theory. Understanding human alteration of the global carbon cycle and the link between atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and climate remains one of the foremost environmental problems at the interface of ecology and earth system science. Many people are familiar with the terms ‘global warming’ and ‘climate change’, but fewer are able to articulate the science that support these hypotheses. This book addresses general questions such as: what is the link between the carbon cycle and climate change; what is the current evidence for the fate of carbon dioxide added by human activities to the atmosphere, and what has caused past changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide? How can the radiocarbon and stable isotopes of carbon combined with other tools be used for quantifying the human impact on the global carbon cycle?

Description / Table of Contents: This book mainly focuses on key aspects of biomembranes that have emerged over the past 15 years. It covers static and dynamic descriptions, as well as modeling for membrane organization and shape at the local and global (at the cell level) scale. It also discusses several new developments in non-equilibrium aspects that have not yet been covered elsewhere. Biological membranes are the seat of interactions between cells and the rest of the world, and internally, they are at the core of complex dynamic reorganizations and chemical reactions. Despite the long tradition of membrane research in biophysics, the physics of cell membranes as well as of biomimetic or synthetic membranes is a rapidly developing field. Though successful books have already been published on this topic over the past decades, none include the most recent advances. Additionally, in this domain, the traditional distinction between biological and physical approaches tends to blur. This book gathers the most recent advances in this area, and will benefit biologists and physicists alike

Description / Table of Contents: This book describes and analyses necessities for a more resource-efficient world. It discusses solutions for a more sustainable use of natural resources, addressing decision-makers and experts from the fields of policy development, industry, academia, civil society, and the media. The book presents strategies, concrete ways and examples of achieving more sustainable resource use in practice. Following on from two previous titles published on Factor X by the Umweltbundesamt (German Environment Agency), entitled “Factor X: Policy, Strategies and Instruments for a Sustainable Resource Use” (2013) and “Factor X: Re-source - Designing the Recycling Society” (2014), this book further investigates how savings in natural resources and resource efficiency improvements could be achieved, focusing on good practice examples that cover different resource categories, pursue different efficiency strategies and come from different sectors, e.g. innovative products or serv ices, technology, management approaches, systemic approaches, etc. The background against which this work is done has a highly comprehensive span, from the first Declaration of the Factor X Club in the nineties, to the European Commission’s Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe that was published in September 2011, through to the German Federal government’s German Resource Efficiency Programme (ProgRess I and II) in 2012 and 2016, the G7 Alliance for Resource Efficiency, and most recently the development and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Description / Table of Contents: A non-technical (but serious) treatment of those parts of Earth history leading up to human history, as well as some pre-historical aspects of humanity. Many “events” in Earth’s history necessarily preceded the emergence of human beings (and intelligence). Geology has provided us with a great deal of information about these various steps on the way to intelligent life, and how and why they were important. Some of these events were on a cosmic scale (no universe - no life!), some were planetological/astronomical (no Earth - no life), some were essentially chemical (how did life emerge in the primordial ocean and why do we have oxygen in the atmosphere?), and some were details of evolutionary history (how did life colonize the land and how did mammals develop?). In this book an enthusiastic professor of geosciences presents a broad introduction from the Big Bang to the present and into the future, lucidly explaining aspects from various disciplines to interested, non-specialist readers.

Description / Table of Contents: This textbook introduces fundamental dynamics of tropical atmosphere and ocean useful for advanced graduate courses in atmospheric and climate sciences. It presents an overview of simple atmospheric and oceanic models, as well as the observed phenomena associated with major climate modes in the tropics. It provides students with an up-to-date understanding of the dynamics of tropical climate and weather phenomena. A particular focus is given to scale interactions and atmosphere-ocean interactions associated with tropical mean climate (such as ITCZ asymmetry and annual cycles), synoptic-scale variability (such as synoptic wave trains, easterly waves and tropical cyclones), intraseasonal oscillations (such as Madden-Julian Oscillation and boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation), and interannual variability (such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation and Indian Ocean Dipole). Theoretical and conceptual models are presented for better understanding of physical mechanisms behind the observational phenomena. This book aims to motivate graduate students in atmospheric sciences and oceanography by providing them with the key methods and tools necessary to conduct research.

Description / Table of Contents: Do you know silica, the tetrahedra of silicon and oxygen constituting the crystals of New Agers and the desiccant in a box of new shoes? It's no mere mundane mineral. As chemically reacting silicate rocks, silica set off the chain of events known as the origin of life. As biomineralized opal, it is the cell wall, skeleton, spicules, and scales of organisms ornamenting numerous lobes of the tree of life. Cryptocrystalline silica made into stone tools helped drive the evolution of our hands and our capability for complex grammar, music, and mathematics. As quartz crystals, silica is impressively electric and ubiquitous in modern technology (think sonar, radios, telephones, ultrasound, and cheap but precise watches). Silica is inescapable when we take a drink or mow the lawn and it has already started to save the Earth from the carbon dioxide we're spewing into the atmosphere. This book tells these scientific tales and more, to give dear, modest silica its due.

Description / Table of Contents: This book gathers contributions from scientists and industry representatives on achieving a sustainable bioeconomy. It also covers the social sciences, economics, business, education and the environmental sciences. There is an urgent need to optimise and maximise the use of biological resources, so that primary production and processing systems can generate more food, fibre and other bio-based products with less environmental impacts and lower greenhouse gas emissions. In other words, we need a “sustainable bioeconomy” – a term that encompasses the sustainable production of renewable resources from land, fisheries and aquaculture environments and their conversion into food, feed, fibre bio-based products and bio-energy, as well as related public goods. Despite the relevance of achieving a sustainable bioeconomy, there are very few publications in this field. Addressing that gap, this book illustrates how biological resources and ecosystems could be used in a more sustainable, efficient and integrated manner – in other words, how the principles of sustainable bioeconomy can be implemented in practice. Given its interdisciplinary nature, the field of sustainable bioeconomy offers a unique opportunity to address complex and interconnected challenges, while also promoting economic growth. It helps countries and societies to make a transition and to use resources more efficiently, and shows how to rely less on biological resources to satisfy industry demands and consumer needs. The papers are innovative, cross-cutting and include many practice-based lessons learned, some of which are reproducible elsewhere. In closing, the book, prepared by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and the World Sustainable Development Research and Transfer Centre (WSD-RTC), reiterates the need to promote a sustainable bioeconomy today.

Description / Table of Contents: Basic Confocal Microscopy, Second Edition builds on the successful first edition by keeping the same format and reflecting relevant changes and recent developments in this still-burgeoning field. This format is based on the Confocal Microscopy Workshop that has been taught by several of the authors for nearly 20 years and remains a popular workshop for gaining basic skills in confocal microscopy. While much of the information concerning fluorescence and confocal microscopy that made the first edition a success has not changed in the six years since the book was first published, confocal imaging is an evolving field and recent advances in detector technology, operating software, tissue preparation and clearing, image analysis, and more have been updated to reflect this. Several of these advances are now considered routine in many laboratories, and others such as super resolution techniques built on confocal technology are becoming widely available.

Description / Table of Contents: This book introduces readers to ecological informatics as an emerging discipline that takes into account the data-intensive nature of ecology, the valuable information to be found in ecological data, and the need to communicate results and inform decisions, including those related to research, conservation and resource management. At its core, ecological informatics combines developments in information technology and ecological theory with applications that facilitate ecological research and the dissemination of results to scientists and the public. Its conceptual framework links ecological entities (genomes, organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, landscapes) with data management, analysis and synthesis, and communicates new findings to inform decisions by following the course of a loop. In comparison to the 2nd edition published in 2006, the 3rd edition of Ecological Informatics has been completely restructured on the basis of the generic conceptual f ramework provided in Figure 1. It reflects the significant advances in data management, analysis and synthesis that have been made over the past 10 years, including new remote and in situ sensing techniques, the emergence of ecological and environmental observatories, novel evolutionary computations for knowledge discovery and forecasting, and new approaches to communicating results and informing decisions.

Description / Table of Contents: This book seeks to enhance the cultural dimension of sustainable development and particularly focuses on minor historic centers and their natural and rural landscapes. In a society becoming ever more globalized, without territorial restrictions in the production of goods and able to reproduce in China the goods and product characteristic of South American crafts (to mention just two extremes), the only element that can still be contextualized is heritage identity: the result of close integration between cultural assets, intangible assets and settled communities. Thus, heritage identity is one of the few elements, together with natural resources, which has the potential for economic development that is still firmly rooted in places and local populations. These towns are often the centerpiece of urban landscapes and geographical areas with original features, not always but often as individual places within networks of minor historical centers linked by shared history, traditions and/or natural elements (rivers, forests, river systems or other natural elements). They are outside the major tourist networks, even if now there is a budding interest in the touristic exploitation of these environments. So, they are the right places to pursue a sustainable and local development with a cultural perspective. This book is a product of the VIVA_EASTPART project (Valorisation and Improving of management of Small Historic Centres in the eastern PARTnership region), under the EU-funded “ENPI Eastern Partnership” program. It complements the more practically-focused work that is in production from this group, more focused on empirical approaches to the development of minor historic centers of the nations involved. Though the book has been influenced by this research and working experience, the authors are solely responsible for the content and opinions presented.

Description / Table of Contents: This highly interdisciplinary book studies historical famines as an interface of nature and culture. It will bring together researchers from the natural and social sciences as well as the humanities. With reference to recent interdisciplinary concepts (disaster studies, vulnerability studies, environmental history) it will examine, how the dominant opposition of natural and cultural factors can be overcome. Such an integrated approach includes the "archives of nature" as well as "archives of man". It challenges deterministic models of human-environment interaction and replaces them with a dynamic, historicising approach. As a result it provides a fresh perspective on the entanglement of climate and culture in past societies.

Description / Table of Contents: This book aims at explaining the nature and strength of the links between the families and their farms looking at their diversity throughout the world. To do so, it documents family farming diversity by using the sustainable rural livelihood (SRL) framework exploring their ability to adapt and transform to changing environments. In 18 case studies in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, it shows how family farms resist under adverse conditions, seize new opportunities and permanently transform. Family farms, far from being backwards are potential solutions to face the current challenges and shape a new future for agriculture taking advantage of their local knowledge and capacity to cope with external constraints. Many co-authors of the book have both an empirical and theoretical experience of family farming in developed and developing countries and their related institutions. They specify «what makes and means family» in family farming and the diversity of their expertise draws a wide and original picture of this resilient way of farming throughout the world.

Description / Table of Contents: This book gives a unique insight into the current knowledge of krill population dynamics including distribution, biomass, production, recruitment, growth and mortality rates. Detailed analysis is provided on food and feeding, reproduction and krill behaviour. The volume provides an overview on the aspects of natural challenges to the species, which involve predation, parasites and the commercial exploitation of the resource and its management. A chapter on genetics shows the results of population subdivision and summarizes recent work on sequencing transcriptomes for studying gene function as part of the physiology of live krill. The focus of Chapter 4 is on physiological functions such as biochemical composition, metabolic activity and growth change with ontogeny and season; and will demonstrate which environmental factors are the main drivers for variability. Further discussed in this chapter are the bottle necks which occur in the annual life cycle of krill, and the mechanisms krill have adapted to cope with severe environmental condition.

Description / Table of Contents: Modelling of the Glaciers-Ocean-Atmosphere system by M. Ya. Verbitsky and D. V. Chalikov presents an earth's climate model based on one-dimensional non-steady thermohydrodynamical equations for the atmosphere, ocean, glaciers, and the asthenosphere. The model takes into account the main mechanisms responsible for the formation of global climate, but it is simple enough to allow simulation of climate evolution for a period up to one million years. The present climate is reconstructed, sensitivity of the system to changes in the initial conditions is investigated and evidence for non-uniqueness of climate for the present distribution of the continents is obtained. Climate sensitivity to changes in the isolation is calculated. Oscillations of climate similar to the Pleistocene ice ages are modelled. Climatic conditions for the Late Mesozoic and Late Pleistozoic are estimated. The book is intended for specialists on climate, oceanologists, meteorologists, glaciologists and also for students of appropriate specialities.

Description / Table of Contents: This monograph is devoted to modern considerations on geochemistry of rare earth elements (REE) in the ocean. Chemical properties of REE which determine their migration ability in natural processes and REE sources are presented. The REE behavior in the river water-seawater mixing zone is analyzed, as well as fractionation of dissolved and particulate REE in the oceanic water in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. It is shown that the variability of REE composition in pelagic sediments reflects their fractionation in oceanic water, as a consequence of material differentiation in the ocean. REE distribution in terrigenous, authigenic, hydrothermal and biogenic constituents of sediments is considered, including clay minerals, bone debris, barite, phillipsite, iron and manganese oxyhydroxides (ferromanganese nodules and micronodules), iron-calcium hydroxophosphate, diatoms and foraminifers. For geologists, geochemists and oceanologists.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: The main task of the book is to tell how a person gradually becomes an inhabitant of the icy continent, how, along with the exploration of the South Polar continent, it is being developed, the experience of life and work of people in extremely harsh natural conditions is accumulated. The originality of the continent, which differs sharply in its natural conditions from other continents of our planet, determines the originality of this activity. Antarctica in this respect is, as it were, a transitional step for the study and subsequent development of other planets. In the domestic literature, Antarctica was hardly covered in this aspect. The author is "his own man" in Antarctica, and this gives his story a special interest and authenticity. Designed for a wide range of readers.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: In November 1969, a group of young specialists from the Arctic and Antarctic State landed on an ice island drifting in the north of the East Siberian Sea. A 35-meter-thick Qsrut was 14 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide. It seemed that no force in nature was capable of crushing this giant ice monolith. But something happened that no one could have expected ... All the vicissitudes of the SP-19 expedition were described by its participants in the book "Ice Island Underfoot", published in 1972 by the "Young Guard". The new edition includes original notes preserved in the diaries and archives of the authors and for one reason or another were not included in the first edition. For a wide range of readers.

Description / Table of Contents: This book is a manual for the determination of fossil and recent fruits and seeds. It includes species known in fossil condition and species which are most likely to be found in the future in quaternary deposits. Generally these are species discovered in pleistocene and holocene deposits and only partly in upper tertiary. In the book are given recommendations for the collection of samples for carpological analysis, methodics of paleocarpological analysis, methods for determining the age of floras and the age and genesis of the deposits containing them. Furthermore brief characteristics of carpological floras are given for different periods of the Quaternary for the U.S.S.R. and adjacent territories. There are two types of keys for determination of fruits and seeds - morphological (15 keys) and taxonomical (17 keys) for the determination of genera and species within large families and species within genera. The brief characteristics of fruits and seeds of different families and genera facilitate identification. Many carpoids may be determined in different ways, depending on the character considered in the determination and also owing to the individual variability of the shape and size of fruits and seeds under different ecological conditions. The descriptions of fruits and seeds include data on their present geographic distribution. Locations of fossil fruits and seeds are listed after literary data in the U.S.S.R., Poland, partly in Germany and England and the findings made by the authors of the book are reported. Among them are most numerous locations of fossils discovered by M. G. Kipiani in deposits of different ages and from different regions of the U.S.S.R. The keys for determinations embrace 108 families and over 1100 species. Almost all the descriptions are accompanied by drawings, mostly original ones, of recent fruits and seeds, and in many cases by drawings and photographs of fossils. The contours were drawn under a binocular microscope and the cell structure, separatedly, under a microscope. Furthermore the cell structure drawing was often fitted into the contours. This was done under a hand-lens; therefore it is recommended to use a hand-lens too in examining the drawings. Drawings of cross sections, either schematic or with details of cell structure facilitate determination. Dimensions are indicated in the legends to the figures only if omited in the descriptions. Magnification is indicated but approximately, taking into account the reduction, of the drawing in the preparation of cliches.

Description / Table of Contents: In the monograph the author sets forth some features of the Southern Hemisphere stratosphere in every year season. It is done on the grounds of the average monthly baric topography Southern Hemisphere charts for 30 mb and also on the grounds of the daily radiosonding by some polar stations. Some urgent problems are examined in this work, they are the possibilities and character of the origin stratospheric rising in temperature, vertical power of the cold polar invasions in the middle latitudes, the pecularities of the spring and autumn field temperature changes and the polar region geopotential, the velopause topography over the polar region and some other problems. Differences in the stratospheric field temperature structure and the geopotential in the polar region of the northern and southern hemisphere are presented in the conclusion. In the first place the monograph is of interest to specialists in meteorology dealing with the atmospheric general circulation, weather forecasters - practical workers, geographers, geophysicists and students-meteorologists. It can also be of interest to specialists concerning with the atmospheric earth structure.
