Description / Table of Contents: A twelve month sampling program was conducted in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica to determine the coastal marine fauna of the area. A species list of the animals inhabiting the benthic, pelagic, planktonic and ice / water interface communities investigated is presented with ecological information about each collection site. Most of the collected species appear to be circumpolar and some information is provided on their distribution within the Vestfold Hills region.

Description / Table of Contents: A shallow firn core drilling program was conducted in eastern Wilkes Land in 1985 by an ANARE glaciological team. In conjunction with surveys carried out on ice sheet topography and snow surface characteristics, 250 m of firn cores were retriedved from 15 shallow boreholes to investigate the firn-pack structure and firn stratigraphy. Firn layer density, grain size and visible stratigraphy were measured on all cores. The measured firn core data are presented.

Description / Table of Contents: Most of the papers in this collection were presented in the solar terrestrial physics specialist lectures at the eighth Australian Institute of Physics conference held at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, between 25 and 29 January 1988. Papers 9, 16 and 17 were not presented at the conference but are considered to be of interest to scientists studying the upper atmosphere at high southern latitudes. The final two papers are an expansion of poster presentations outlining the established research facilities at Australia's four permanent stations, Macquarie Island, Mawson, Davis and Casey. In particular, the last section is intended to indicate to researchers the type of data available from routine observatory style experiments, and the provision of timing and data logging facilities for those planning to establish experiments in Antarctica. The majority of papers are preliminary and are intended as a summary of current directions of Australian upper atmospheric and space physics research in Antarctica. It is anticipated that the results will appear in appropriate journals.

Description / Table of Contents: Four moorings were deployed in Prydz Bay during 1985 to collect information at four depths at four sites on water speed, direction, temperature, and in some cases, conductivity. The reduced data and notes on the data acquisition methods and locations are presented. Some initial comments on the characteristics of the data are given and some speculation on the implications of the data is included. An initial description of the physical oceanography of Prydz Bay provided the first input to a database of sufficient intregrity and quantitiy for numerical modelling purposes.

Description / Table of Contents: Measurements taken near solar minimum of the total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere equatorward of Macquarie Island (54.5°S, 158.9°E), using the Faraday rotation techniques are presented. The data collected indicate that the peak in daytime TEC maximises around late autumn, progressively decreases through winter to spring, and gradually recovers with the onset of summer. The morning post-sunrise build up phase of TEC becomes progressively less uniform from winter through summer, whilst the post-sunset TEC decay phase is often disrupted, during all seasons, by the onset of geomagnetic disturbances and / or the passage of the ionospheric trough. Magnetic storm events are often accompanied by a large increase in TEC lasting several hours, with increased geomagnetic activity on successive evenings, and a general reduction of daytime TEC levels during the storm recovery phase over 2 - 3 days. The largest percentage increases in TEC generally occur around the time of the minimum value of the Dst-index.

Description / Table of Contents: During the ADBEX III cruise (September to December 1985) to the western Prydz Bay region, Antarctica, nine shallow hauls (0-200 m), six deep hauls (200-1000 m) and one target trawl were made with a RMT 1+8 net, as well as eleven vertical hauls with an ORI-2000 net. From these samples abundance of euphausiids, notably krill Euphausia superba, and other zooplankton was investigated. A diving program was also carried out to observe and collect Euphausia superba from under the pack-ice. For postlarval krill, size (length, weight), sex and maturity composition are reported.

Description / Table of Contents: Phytoplankton samples were collected at hydrographic stations along seven north-south transects during the SIBEX II cruise (December 1984 - February 1985). Phytoplankton pigments were analysed using a high resolution high performance liquid chromatography technique which resolves virtually all known marker pigments. Data are presented for the abundance of twenty-seven pigments in the upper 200 m of the water column at each station. For each major marker pigment, north-south vertical sections are presented, as well as the geographic distribution of each pigment integrated from the surface to 100 m depth and the integrated ratio of that pigment to chlorophyll a. These represent the total abundance of the algal source and its relative proportion in the population, respectively.
