    Description: An increasing number of preschool teachers have a master's degree, and in Norway, employing preschool teachers with a master’s-level education is a stated political objective. In both Norway and Denmark, there is growing demand for greater expertise in preschool and more career options for preschool teachers and educators. Thus, there is also a need for greater understanding about the impact of academic knowledge on preschool pedagogical practice. In this anthology, new empirical knowledge is presented on how master's-level competence is applied practically within the preschool context, and how academic knowledge is found relevant in practice. The empirical material that forms the basis of this anthology is qualitative interviews with master's-educated teachers in Norwegian and Danish preschools as well as a survey sent to all preschools in Norway. The anthology is also based on historical material and documents that highlight the rise of specialized education in general and master's education in particular. The book stems from the research project “Preschool master in practice”, a collaborative project between researchers at one Danish and two Norwegian educational institutions: VIA University College in Århus, Oslo Metropolitan University, and the University of South-Eastern Norway. The aim of the project has been to increase understanding of how master’s-educated preschool teachers’ feel their particular expertise is put to use, and how their expertise benefits the preschool and creates opportunities within the sector.
    Description: Stadig flere barnehagelærere har masterutdanning. I Norge er det også en uttalt politisk ambisjon om at det skal ansettes flere masterutdannede barnehagelærere i barnehagen. Både i Norge og Danmark ser vi en økende etterspørsel etter mer kompetanse i barnehagen og flere karriereveier for barnehagelærere og pedagoger. Dermed blir det også behov for mer kunnskap om hva som skjer i møtet mellom akademisk kunnskap og barnehagefaglig pedagogisk praksis. I denne antologien presenteres ny empirisk kunnskap om hvordan kompetanse på masternivå anvendes i barnehagen, og hvordan akademisk kunnskap gis relevans for barnehagens praksis. Det empiriske materialet som ligger til grunn for antologien, er kvalitative intervjuer med masterutdannede barnehagelærere i norske og danske barnehager og en spørreundersøkelse sendt ut til alle norske barnehager. Antologien er også basert på historisk materiale og dokumenter som synliggjør framveksten av videreutdanninger generelt og masterutdanning spesielt. Bokutgivelsen springer ut av forskningsprosjektet «Barnehagefaglig master i praksis», som er et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom forskere ved én dansk og to norske utdanningsinstitusjoner, henholdsvis VIA University College i Århus, OsloMet – storbyuniversitetet og Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge. Målet med prosjektet har vært å utvide kunnskapen om hvordan barnehagelærere med barnehagefaglig masterutdanning erfarer at deres kompetanse blir anvendt, og om hvordan kompetansen kommer barnehagen til gode og gis muligheter i sektoren.

    Description: Kvotesystemet er det sentrale fiskeripolitiske virkemidlet for utnytting og fordeling av våre viltlevende marine fiskeressurser. Systemet består av flere deler eller reguleringssystemer som til sammen danner en rettslig ramme for tilgangen til å høste av og tjene på fellesskapets ressurser. Ved endringene av havressurslova og deltakerloven i 2021 har vi fått et nytt kvotesystem. I denne boken nøyer forfatteren seg ikke med å fremstille gjeldende fiskerilover og forskrifter i det nye kvotesystemet, men har en bredere tilnærming til temaet. Analysen gir blant annet leseren kunnskap om rettsfeltet slik dette er vokst frem over tid; status for endringer i virkemiddelbruken på rettsfeltet, særlig i kjølvannet av Stortingets behandling av kvotemeldingen, Meld. St. 32 (2018–2019), i 2020 og endring av kvotesystemet i 2021 ved lov 5. mars 2021 nr. 7; legitimitetsutfordringen på rettsfeltet med utgangspunkt i et rettferdighetskonsept; delegasjon av lovgivningsmyndighet; og rekkevidden av diskrimineringsforbud i norsk rett ved lukkinger av kystfiskeri.

    Description: Norge beskrives gjerne som et land preget av små forskjeller mellom folk når det gjelder inntekt og levekår. Stemmer dette? Sammenliknet med en rekke andre land er beskrivelsen dekkende. Like fullt har vi ulikhet også her i landet, og på noen områder er den økende. Inntektsforskjellene har blitt større, deler av befolkningen sliter med å få seg en godt betalt jobb og levekårene varierer mellom grupper av befolkningen. I denne antologien retter vi blikket mot ulikhetens drivere og dilemmaer. Vi drøfter konsekvensene av internasjonale trender som slår inn i Norge og som setter den norske modellens løsninger på prøve. Samtidig møtes internasjonale trender med politiske grep og veivalg.     Description: Tid for lesing! handler om leseferdighetene til elever i tiårsalderen slik de er målt i den internasjonale undersøkelsen PIRLS i 2021. PIRLS 2021 ble gjennomført under covid-19-pandemien. Undersøkelsen inkluderer både en leseprøve og spørreskjemaer til elever, foresatte, norsklærere og rektorer. Som leseprøve måler PIRLS resultatet av flere års leseopplæring, ikke bare den opplæringa som har funnet sted i femte klasse. Når elevene er blitt ti år gamle, skal den grunnleggende leseferdigheten være nok utviklet til at de skal kunne lese og forstå tekster i mange ulike fag og sammenhenger. Samtidig er elevene fortsatt så unge at leseferdigheten kan forbedres i de tilfellene der ferdigheten er lav. Denne antologien utdyper resultatene fra kortrapporten (mai 2023) gjennom analyser av flere faktorer som kan ha betydning for barns leseutvikling. Kapitlene spenner over en rekke temaer, som betydningen av hjemmemiljø, skole og lærere for elevenes leseprestasjoner, elevenes lesevaner, elever med svake leseprestasjoner, hvordan elevene liker og presterer på tekstene i PIRLS, samt forskjeller mellom elever som tok PIRLS-prøven på papir og digitalt. Vi undersøker også mulige drivkrefter bak nedgangen i norske tiåringers leseforståelse.

    Description: This book is the first Finnish-language collection of research on superdiversity. At the core of the book is the growing migration to Finland since the turn of the 1990s and its numerous effects on Finnish society. The interdisciplinary examination of superdiversity is important at the current moment: Finland as a society has reached the point where certain social categories, such as ethnic background, country of birth, mother tongue or gender, are not necessarily sufficient to understand the increased diversity and its consequences. The book consists of a comprehensive introduction to the topic and thirteen chapters. In Finland, research on superdiversity is carried out especially in critical sociolinguistics and applied language studies, education, cultural studies, social sciences, and urban studies. Therefore, these disciplines are strongly represented in the collection, and the chapters approach a variety of topics including refugees’ mental health, experiences of multilingual families, the diversity of education and working life, discursive practices in social media, issues of urban planning and pro-asylum activism.

    Description: Michael Agricola’s main work is the New Testament, published in 1548, a magnificent quarto volume of 700 pages with a hundred woodcuts. The basic text used was the Greek text published by Erasmus, Erasmus’ Latin translation, the Vulgate, the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible from 1541. The 450 marginal glosses come from the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible. In his translation, Agricola distinguished “the Holy Spirit’s own words,” i.e. H. the Bible text, the prefaces and marginal glosses, which were only intended to provide “clearer understanding”. The word of God is much more valuable than the word of man, so that the translator was closely tied to the text. A free translation was out of the question, let alone consciously improving the text. He was able to proceed more freely with the prefaces and marginal glosses. Most of the time he translated verbatim, but did not shy away from omissions, additions and changes when he deemed them appropriate. In this critical edition, Agricola’s marginal glosses on the New Testament are printed in parallel with their sources.

    Description: A middle Cambrian (Miaolingian) agnostoid-paradoxidid fauna from the Alum Shale Formation of the Lower Allochthon in the Caledonides of northwestern Sweden is described. More than 1000 specimens were collected from 46 localities in the Blaik Nappe Complex. This complex represents displaced strata, originally deposited on the distal outer shelf of Baltica. Strong tectonic overprint prevented systematic bed-by-bed sampling, but the collected fauna represents the Pentagnostus praecurrens, Triplagnostus gibbus, Acidusus atavus, Ptychagnostus punctuosus, Goniagnostus nathorsti and lower part of the Lejopyge laevigata agnostoid zones. The Hawke Bay hiatus encompasses the Kibartian and basal Bödan stages. Higher up, the upper part of the L. laevigata Zone appears to be absent, and the overlying Agnostus pisiformis Zone is found only at a few localities, developed as the Exporrecta Conglomerate. This is suggestive of local isostatic uplift in the late Miaolingian. One new species, Cotalagnostus greilingi n. sp., is described and Lejopyge calva Robinson, Hypagnostus clipeus Whitehouse, Doryagnostus deltoides Robinson and Lisogoragnostus confluentus (Rudolph) are for the first time reported from Sweden. All other taxa recorded are known also from the Miaolingian of southern Scandinavia, but the faunal composition in terms of relative frequencies differs. Agnostoid arthropods dominate (39 taxa) with trilobites (17 taxa) as a minor to rare constituent. The palaeoecology of Miaolingian faunas described from Scandinavia is discussed briefly. Three benthic biofacies are recognized, representing a depth transect from well-ventilated inner shelf environments dominated by a diverse trilobite fauna with sparse to infrequent agnostoids (southern Scandinavia) to outer shelf dysoxic environments with more frequent agnostoids and sparse to no trilobites (study area).

    Description: Nyskaping er eit omgrep vi møter i mange samanhengar, og det er gjerne tett kopla til omgrepet innovasjon. Oftast er nyskaping omtalt i positive lada ordelag og som noko vi ønskjer å få til meir av. Men kva inneber nyskaping? Antologien løfter opp nokre spørsmål som er med å tydeleggjere kva nyskaping er. Kva skil nyskaping frå innovasjon? Kva er tilsikta og utilsikta konsekvensar av nyskapingsprosessar? Og kva skal til for å lukkast?. Krav til nyskaping kjem også til UH-sektoren, og dei ulike bidraga i antologien drøftar kva rolle UH-sektoren kan ha i nyskapinga. Nokre av kapitla tar fatt på denne debatten på eit prinsipielt nivå, gjennom å diskutere det opp mot UH-sektoren si rolle og mandatet til institusjonar innan høgare utdanning og forsking. Andre kapittel, med empiri i all hovudsak forankra i «fjordregionen», gjev viktige praktiske døme på korleis slike nyskapingsprosessar utfoldar seg i praksis. Fleire av kapitla diskuterer i større grad nyskapingar – altså produktet snarare enn prosessen. Diskusjonane frå kapitla i denne antologien syner at omgrepet nyskaping er mangfaldig. Eit viktig funn er at nyskapingsomgrepet ser ut til å representere noko anna og lettare handgripeleg for mange av aktørane enn det meir etablerte innovasjonsomgrepet. Det mogleggjer nye former for samhandling og innsikt som også er relevant langt utover regionen døma tek utgangspunkt i.

    Description: The biography of Margaret Darling Kilpinen (1896–1965) represents the fields of music history and women’s studies. It brings forth a woman who is of pliable but also strong character. She was active for over four decades in the musical life of Finland. What kind of professional role, combining performing and pedagogical work, was she able to build for herself? She was the wife of a well-known, strong-willed composer who had many ties to Germany, and also the mother of a daughter. How was she able to keep up her own artistry? The book deals with Margaret’s role as a solo and lied pianist, her long career as a pedagogue in the Sibelius Academy and as a harpsichord player with a part in the rise of old music in Finland in the 1930s. There is also the microhistorical angle: While looking at Margaret as a person and her life, general tendencies and attitudes among the cultural circles of Finland of her time are revealed. The main source material for the book, which is available for use for the very first time, has been the correspondence between Yrjö and Margaret Kilpinen.

    Description: Skjønnlitteraturens ungdommer er saftrike slyngelalderskikkelser. Slyngelalderen er en rampete, utforskende og uforutsigbar livsfase. Den skjønnlitterære ungdommen er, som ungdom ellers, i en prosess der de både skal finne ut av seg selv og kaste seg ut i verden. Selv om dette gjør skjønnlitterær ungdom saft- og næringsrik for den litterære fortolkeren, har de sjeldent fanget litteraturforskerens interesse. Den ellers så omsvermede ungdommen har rett og slett vært oversett som litterært tema og motiv. I denne boken retter vi derfor blikket mot ungdom i skjønnlitteraturen. Hvilken plass og funksjon har ungdom i litteraturen? Artiklene i antologien viser at enkelte bruker litteraturen for å vise ungdom hva de bør være, mens andre er opptatt av å utvide forståelsen av ungdom gjennom skildringer av hva ungdom er. Artiklene belyser skjønnlitterær ungdom fra 1700-tallet fram til vår tid, og de tydeliggjør samlet sett at saftrik ungdom florerer i litteraturen, også der man trodde de kanskje ikke fantes. Ungdom bør følgelig betraktes som et sentralt og kraftfullt litterært motiv. Artiklene i antologien dekker et bredt spekter: Her undersøkes både kjente og ukjente og eldre så vel som nyere tekster. Nedslagene er hovedsakelig i skandinavisk litteratur, men linjene trekkes også mot Europa. Boken retter seg mot studenter, undervisere og forskere i lærerutdanningene og i litteraturvitenskap og mot alle andre som har interesse for skjønnlitteratur og ungdom.

    Description: Eventer som forskningsområde er i konstant utvikling ved at stadig nye sider av eventer har blitt undersøkt. I denne boka viser forskere fra ulike fagtradisjoner, og dermed med forskjellige perspektiver og teoretiske innfallsvinkler, hvordan eventer og beredskap kan knyttes til ulike kontekster. Boka retter seg i all hovedsak mot en norsk beredskapskontekst, og en stor andel av kapitlene er knyttet til koronapandemien. Pandemien førte til avlysning av eventer eller til eventer uten publikum – og et behov for ny kunnskap når en slik langvarig krise oppstår, viste kunnskapshull om beredskap ved eventer, som må fylles. Dermed har også koblingen mellom eventer og beredskap blitt tydeligere. Den første halvdelen av boka tar utgangspunkt i koronapandemien og hvilke utfordringer pandemien har skapt for ulike eventinteressenter, og da særlig innen idretten. Den andre halvdelen retter oppmerksomheten mot generelle problemstillinger relatert til beredskap ved eventer. Boka er en forskningsbasert antologi, men henvender seg også til en bred målgruppe av studenter og praktikere som er interessert i beredskap og eventer.

    Description: The book approaches the history of Finnish development cooperation through the experiences of development aid workers. At its core is a small group of Finns (experts and officials from different fields) who have worked with international development aid in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Their memories and experiences, together with diverse archival material offer an interesting window into the world of development (cooperation), or “Aidland”, from the 1960s to the turn of the millennium. The research focuses on the personal motives and experiences of Finnish aid workers from the 1960s to the 2000s. The book offers perspectives on the historical construction of Aidland since the 1940s and on the gradual integration of Finland and the Finns into its structures. It describes the mindset of the first two generations of aid workers and the factors that made them interested in developing countries. The book follows their education, their first contacts with Aidland, adaptation to work and conditions, returning home and the challenges that come with it. The study gives the reader a view of the power positions, hierarchies and contradictions in Aidland and development cooperation, which at times led Finns to reassess their motives and justify to themselves the meaningfulness of the entire undertaking. Through their experiences, the book also deals with the less-known side of development cooperation, such as corruption, prejudices, and opposition to development projects, as well as their occasionally unwanted consequences in partner/recipient countries. It also sheds light on the effects of the Aidland experience on an individual’s worldview and identity. The book is an academic study suitable for a wide audience, from university students to ordinary readers interested in development cooperation. The book helps to understand both the history of development and the construction of multi-level connections of Finnish society with the countries of the Global South. It is therefore also ideally suited for readers interested in the development of Finland’s internationalization in the late twentieth century. For its part, the book contributes to wider public debates on development cooperation.

    Description: Participatory approaches and co-research are increasingly employed in the current moment for exploring barriers to equality. Co-research treats research participants as experts in their own lives and as equal research partners. Research conducted with this orientation is based on research problems drafted by the research participants themselves from their aspirations regarding the research process and an active partnership that considers the interests of all parties involved. Participatory methods are used in co-research, particularly for the purpose of deepening the contextualisation of research knowledge about structurally vulnerable or subordinated groups and to challenge the power positions associated with traditional research designs. In co-research, the role of the people involved in the research is more central than in more traditional research. One of the key principles of co-research is that co-investigators (a) can participate in various roles, (b) have the opportunity to participate in different phases of the research according to their own interests and resources, and (c) co-investigators' participation can take many forms, including differences in intensity. The idea is to provide more people with opportunities to contribute to the knowledge production about themselves and their communities from their respective perspectives and interests. Co-research is also seen as an opportunity to improve the relevance and usefulness of scientific knowledge. It aims to genuinely increase interaction and openness and extend science's societal responsibility. In this book, we approach co-research as a means to promote social justice, as an action with a societal impact contributor to social impact and as a means to promote the societal responsibility of science. We discuss and evaluate the ideals of the co-research process concerning the everyday challenges and practices in research. Above all, we offer the knowledge and experience generated by our own projects to support those planning or already implementing co-research projects.

    Description: Originally developed by the Canadian sociologist Dorothy E. Smith, institutional ethnography is an approach to research that aims to explore and challenge power relations in society. In Norway and the other Nordic countries, the approach is used by researchers in a variety disciplines and professional fields. In Experiences with Institutional Ethnography, we gain insight into several different researchers’ motivation for, experiences with and reflections on delving into and using institutional ethnography in their own research. We gain insight into specific research processes and their attendant methodological approaches, into experiences of using key concepts from institutional ethnography, and into reflections on the researcher's role. This book will be a useful tool for researchers, master’s students and research fellows who utilize – or are considering utilizing – institutional ethnography in their work.

    Description: If the artworld is a battlefield of meanings, the fortunes of discourse did not favour avant-garde art in Finland in the 1910s. The latest trends, introduced by German and Russian artists in three pioneering exhibitions in Helsinki in 1914 and 1916, were dismissed by the Finnish press as foolish and unworthy. This book researches the contemporary reactions and contents of these exhibitions. The works shown in Helsinki included masterpieces from artists such as Chagall, Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Marc, Münter and Rozanova. Today these works can be found in the collections of leading museums in Europe, Russia and the USA. From the Finnish perspective, the turndown in the 1910s proved effective and irreversible. Never again have the local collections had similar opportunities to make a purchase. The rejection of radical international developments and emphasis on narrow nationalistic views left Finnish art lagging behind. This trend was already apparent in 1917 in St. Petersburg, where the Finnish artists were celebrated but their paintings deemed sombre and superannuated.

    Description: This volume looks at the Finnish-German military alliance (1941–1944) as a translation zone – a multilingual network of military, administrative and civilian encounters that was held together by linguistically versed soldiers and civilians acting as interpreters and translators. It focuses on interpreters and liaison officers of the Finnish Liaison Staff in Rovaniemi, who were assigned to the staffs of the German army units with the task of maintaining communication between the two armies and assisting German troops in their daily matters. Furthermore, attention is paid to Finnish civilians, especially women whose language skills made them candidates for a range of mediation tasks in the German units. The reconstruction of military interpreters’ and liaison officers’ tasks and mediation agency between the two military cultures is based on their war-time weekly reports, whereas the civilian interpreters’ experiences are drawn from a variety of autobiographical accounts, including interviews.

    Description: Mechthild of Hackeborn represents medieval mysticism. Her Revelations were written down in the 1290s in Helfta, Germany. The oldest surviving versions are in Latin, but in the Middle Ages, the Revelations were translated at least into Dutch, English, Swedish, and German. The text was translated into Swedish in 1469 by Jöns Budde, a Bridgettine brother from Naantali. Budde made few omissions but many additions in the text, mainly explanations to meet the needs of the Bridgettine sisters. Budde’s translation is faithful to the original text, and he made few mistakes. My Finnish translation of the text follows Budde’s version where possible. However, Budde translated an abridged version that omitted some chapters, and the only surviving copy of Budde’s translation is incomplete. I have therefore translated the missing sections from Latin and incorporated them in the text. My translation also includes editorial comments on the language, the contents, and the historical and theological contexts of the Revelations.

    Description: In the period from the middle of the 19th century until the outbreak of the First World War, a modern Norwegian literature developed in parallel with a modern Norwegian media society. New forms of transport and communication, sound and imaging techniques, changed the conditions for what man could see, hear, do, know and imagine. How was Norwegian literature affected by these media technological changes? This book examines how the relationship between man and his media was expressed in Norwegian literature written in the period from 1850 to the beginning of the 20th century. The book shows how the literary innovations of the late 19th century can be understood as responses to the same period's media development, and thus advocates that a media aesthetic perspective can actualize and renew our understanding of this central period in Norwegian literary history.

    Description: Hans Nielsen Hauge established and led at the end of the 18th century Norway's first nationwide popular movement, a low church network that would leave its mark on everyday life, business development and politics in the transition from absolute monarchy to representational government. People called themselves Haugians long after Hauge's death in 1824. It was a spiritual awakening on a scale that deserves considerable room when we write the history of modern Norway. This book provides a new perspective on the roots of the Hauge movement in the religious mentality of the 18th century, on how it functioned in its most radical phase up to 1814, and on the importance of the network for economic modernization and political mobilization in the subsequent decades. Retrospective interpretations of Hauge's complex endeavor are also explored. In sum, the nine chapters provide a broader understanding of the Hauge movement and the era in which it flourished. We hope that the book also sheds light on the state of Norway's people, government and religiosity today, over 250 years after Hauge's birth. The book has been edited by research fellow Eli Morken Farstad and associate professor Kristian Holen Nymark, both historians at the University of South-Eastern Norway.

    Description: Norsk atten- og nittenhundretalls modernisering og demokratiutvikling har ofte blitt fortolket innenfor sekulære rammer. Men religion og religiøse aktører spilte sentrale roller i norsk nasjonsbygging, noe som kommer spesielt tydelig fram sett i et transnasjonalt perspektiv. Ved å forfølge ulike protestantiske impulser, aktører og transnasjonale nettverk ønsker forfatterne å bidra til ny kunnskap om forholdet mellom religion, sekularisering og modernisering i norsk historie fra 1840-tallet fram til 1980-tallet. Religionen som utforskes, er ulike former for protestantisk kristendom, men ikke bare fra et norsk statskirkelig ståsted. Tre av kapitlene analyserer ulike norske minoritetskristne perspektiv på forhandlinger om det religiøse og det sekulære blant annet vis-a-vis den lutherske statsreligionen. De resterende kapitlene indikerer hvordan norsk statsreligion i praksis var mer heterogen enn man gjerne antar, på bakgrunn av organisasjoner og aktørers tilknytning til det statskirkelige lutherske. Boken analyserer hvordan mange norske kvinner og menn, uavhengig av klasse- og geografisk bakgrunn, ble påvirket av internasjonale, protestantiske strømninger. I framveksten av det moderne Norge både utfordret og fornyet disse strømningene statskirken, samtidig som de førte til opphevingen av statskirkens formelle livssynsmonopol. Strømningene inspirerte også til modernisering og profesjonalisering av helse- og sosialarbeid i nasjonens senter så vel som i periferien. Flere av kapitlene omhandler ulike aspekt av forholdet mellom kristen aktivisme og det som kan oppfattes som sekulær velferdspraksis i sosialhistorisk sammenheng. Med forfattere fra fagfeltene teologi, religionsvitenskap, kirkehistorie og historie er denne boken et bidrag til dypere og mer nyanserte forståelser av det norske samfunnet i tidsperioden 1846–1986.

    Description: Music plays an important role in many religions and in a variety of religious contexts. Music and Religion: Texts on Music in Religion and Religion in Music takes a look at the intersections between music and religion. We experience religion in music, and in religion we encounter musical expression. Although music and religion are unquestionably mutually pervasive, we can also come across gaps between them: Is it possible to move beyond a musical experience toward a religious one without having to hop over this gap? Og finnes det en vei fra religionen direkte inn i musikken som klangfenomen? Forblir det ikke bare en religiøs fortolkning av musikk? Det finnes mye forskning på musikk og religion, men lite om hvordan de møtes. Denne antologien forsøker å gjøre noe med dette. Musikk og religion retter seg mot alle med interesse for møter mellom disse to livsfenomener.     Description: Politeness is a key means by which we maintain interpersonal relationships. This book is the first comprehensive study of politeness in Finnish. Based on linguistic and pragmatic research, the book spans three parts. The first part is theoretical and historical, summarising three waves of politeness research, describing politeness as a cultural and historical phenomenon. The second part is empirical, providing an example of the study of im/politeness from outsiders’ perspectives—that, is French people living in Finland and Finns living or having lived in France. The focus group discussions ranged from definitions of politeness and differences of behaviour, to learning and teaching as well as to changes to politeness norms within society. The third part summarises the conclusions and offers an epilogue. This reader-friendly book includes exercises and recommended readings, and is welcomed by researchers and students working on politeness and, more broadly, relational work.

    Description: The book presents the biographies and work lists of 126 Finnish women composers born between 1784 and 1909. Based on large-scale archival research, it is the first comprehensive historical account of Finnish women composers and their cultural heritage. The authors draw on feminist music history and the sociohistorical approach to find out who these women were, what kind of music they wrote, and how their careers reflected European cultural and social history. The treatise highlights the influence of girls’ schools, women’s suffrage movements and other socio-political developments on the musical culture of women. Concepts such as “composer”, “woman” and “Finnish” were assumed to be open and inclusive throughout the research, in terms of both musical style and diversity in cultural background. In concentrating on music-making by women, the book opens up radically new vistas on Finland’s music and cultural history, and it rectifies previous erroneous conceptions about women’s composership and their artistic work. In short, it exposes the richness in the sonic and intellectual heritage of Finnish women composers, as well as its significance in society today.

    Description: Both the labor movement and the church have played a large part in shaping modern Norwegian society. Relations between them were often strained - sometimes hostile - in the decades before the Second World War. During and after the war, many dreamed of making a fresh start, with the experiences of community and cooperation during the occupation as a basis. This book explores how these dreams turned out. Different ambitions for the good society came together, and fronts and lines of cooperation were established which have characterized Norwegian social life well into the 21st century. Many questions remained open in the 1940s and 1950s. How should the Labor Party, with a majority in the Parliament, deal with the state church in practice? Should it be given greater autonomy, or should it rather be used as a means of keeping people's erratic religious inclinations under some control? Could the church function as the conscience of the state? The Labor Party's welfare state project - was it something everyone had to cheer for, or did it also contain a worrisome totalitarian tendency? These questions have not been systematically investigated in full in the past, and this presentation is based on new source studies. The book covers a central part of recent Norwegian history, and is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how religion has been treated politically and what role the Church of Norway plays in today's social life.

    Description: It is generally recognized that in early modern society, the position of the church and clergy was very central. As many historians have stated over the decades, the church and state were closely connected and their power structures and ideologies supported each other. However, when studying the social and public role of the church and clergy, it soon becomes quite clear how pervasive this phenomenon was. The church not only created but also maintained and acted as a part of international, national, and local communities, structures, and cultures that connected people regardless of their social status and gender. The church was a spiritual, administrative, and social institution and experience environment, whose tasks, scope, and meanings changed and intertwined with the development, needs, and requirements of society. In this book, we investigate from different perspectives the motives and different means by which the church and clergy came to play a significant part in early modern society. In this volume, the church is considered both as an administrative institution and as a social space and cultural structure. Hence, we do not focus on the history of theology or doctrinal questions. Instead, we consider the social and public roles and meanings of the church. The church as such is understood in this book as transnational, a strong national and local institution, and also a space and structure. The church had its own institutionalized place in society and its activities and rights were defined by law (Church law 1696, the Law of the Swedish kingdom 1734) and by the decrees given by the Royal Majesty. The church had its own archbishop-led administrative organization under the Royal Majesty and it worked in close cooperation with the Crown administration and county governors. In this volume, we understand the clergy as church servants, a trained and appointed professional group, a separate estate (social class), and also as a wide social network constructed by their families. The approach of this book is social science history. In other words, the book examines the church and the clergy as an integral part of society and the individual communities who lived in the current Finnish territory during the early modern era. The topic is examined on the basis of three conceptual themes reflecting important new areas of research in the study of the social significance of the church and clergy: (1) the clergy and family as part of the community, (2) the church as a jointly built space, and (3) the church as an arena for interaction, knowledge, and politics. We approach this multidimensionality using different research questions, sources, methods, and theoretical approaches. The volume focuses on the 17th to 19th centuries, but many of the church and clergy-related phenomena are much older, and some of them extend to the present, so the articles also move beyond this time frame.

    Description: The Centre Party of Finland was represented in almost all cabinets for decades, and it often held the post of prime minister during the reign of President Urho Kekkonen. When Kekkonen’s deteriorating health forced him to resign in 1981, the Centre Party, formerly the Agrarian Union, was in front of the crisis. The party was deeply divided along the lines of who would be the best candidate to succeed Kekkonen. The schism had prevailed for years, and contemporaries suspected the party would split up or at least lose its dominant position in Finnish politics. Besides, the numbers of core supporters making up the party, agrarians, were constantly diminishing. In addition, the Finnish party system was in a state of flux. The Finnish People’s Democratic League was in a deep downward spiral, while the Conservative Party’s support was ascendant. The power struggle between the three ‘big’ parties, the Centre Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Conservative Party, was fierce. The study describes and analyses how the Center Party survived the challenges it faced. How was the cohesion of the party rebuilt and maintained? How did the Centre Party manage to survive the inter-party contests and end up being the strongest party in the elections of 1991? The study is firmly based on source material from the party organization of the Centre Party and other relevant political actors, such as President Mauno Koivisto. The book provides new information on both Finnish domestic and foreign politics and the power struggles among the parties and leading political figures.

    Description: Local police departments receive a vast number of calls annually from the healthcare sector, the education sector, the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration, other social service agencies, families, friends, neighbors and others, expressing concern that individuals or groups might be, or are at risk of becoming, violent extremists. The majority are unwarranted. Yet Norway has, in recent years, experienced that extremists can inflict a great deal of damage, pain, fear and death – not just on individual victims, but on society as a whole. How can the relevant authorities intervene in time to prevent such events from occurring without compromising important democratic values?     Description: In her well-known song, ‘Når himmelen faller ned’ (‘When the Sky Falls Down’), the Norwegian musician Anne Grete Preus described snow as ‘celestial tipp-ex’ and a mighty ‘wonder’. But what exactly is it that snow corrects? And what gives snow its power? Snow’s Formulas: A Natural Phenomenon in Literature attempts to answer these and similar questions by discussing the motif of snow in the context of modernization processes marked by increasing instrumentalization and rationalization. Snow transforms landscapes and defies modernity’s innovations; it simultaneously obscures and accentuates, and also enchants. This process can be described in different ways: as the sublime’s breakthrough in a philosophical, aesthetic sense, or, in a poetological sense, as non-mimetic writing. This strategy plays out in language, and the objective of this study has been to investigate snow’s rhetoricity and how literary depictions of snow can be in response to the challenges of modernity. The book includes readings of texts by H.C. Andersen, Olaf Bull, Hans Børli, Paul Celan, Alexander Kielland, Jonas Lie, Tor Ulven and Tarjei Vesaas, among others. The relationship between snow and modernity is illustrated from a dual perspective. Emphasis is placed on the individual’s position and self-perception within the process of modernization, as well as on the aesthetical problems that arise when writing about snow. Snow makes a white surface; it ‘overwrites’ the ground and encourages a non-mimetic poetry. Snow can be said to be an engine of modern aesthetics that does not take language’s referential aspect for granted.

    Description: In recent decades, the focus of Folklore Studies has shifted from analysing the products of oral traditions as texts to examining the ways in which people use and produce these items, and the areas of study have broadened to include vernacular cultures and genres in diverse verbal and material forms.     Description: Accessibility to art and cultural activities is a topic with increasing attention. Most municipalities in the Scandinavian countries have kulturskoler (extra curricular schools of music and performing arts) that offer training and experiences in – and through – art and culture subjects for children and young people. But the users of these institutions are not representative for the society around them. The majority of the children and young people who actually use the kulturskole come from middle-class homes and have well-educated parents. There is therefore an increasing and absolutely necessary attention in the municipalities on how kulturskoler can reach new target groups, ensure more fair representation and develop as institutions being inclusive forces in the local community. The development project ""Kulturskolen as an inclusive force in the local community (KIL)"" had this focus. In this anthology, there are nine independent peer-reviewed research articles with topics that are relevant for those municipalities wanting to develop their potential as inclusive forces further. The book is suitable for both researchers, students or teachers associated with the didactic field of art, but also kulturskole leaders, elementary school teachers and others who are interested in how the kulturskole can function as an inclusive force in the local community

    Description: This anthology is the second in a series of books from the Department of Management and Organization at Kristiania University College. HR in Today’s Working Life builds on the book Leading People in Today’s Working Life (2020). Through its 12 chapters, the book explores such HR- and management-related topics as: global uncertainty, unforeseeable change, crisis management, predictive analysis and scenario thinking, managerial development and management practices, health-oriented self-management, managerial recruitment, new forms of connection in working life, managers’ legal maneuvering room, demographic development and diversity in working life, and the caregiver’s role. The chapters have there starting point in various aspects of current working life. The authors discuss how changes in and around businesses have necessitated an evolved understanding of what influences organizations and people, a need for new HR practices, and new approaches to how managers should exercise their role. Different kinds of cultural transitions and migrant traditions are connected with transnationality. Studying the multilingualism of literary texts or diverse cultural identities, transnationality is a prolific angle. In the 102nd Yearbook of the Kalevala Society Foundation, the topics cover for example migration and return migration, material things crossing borders, and places of music culture. At a more theoretical level we are asking how studying transnationality enriches the disciplines with roots in the national sciences.

    Description: Alex Matson (1888–1972) is an important Finnish literary critic and essayist, whose literary reviews and collections of essays have made a vital contribution to the development of Finland's postwar literary generation. Born in Finland as the son of a sailor, Matson moved as a young child with his family to Hull in England, where he went to school. In the 1910s, he moved back to Finland, where he at first established himself as painter associated with the expressionist November Group, an important Finnish artistic movement at the time. In the interbellum, he moved from fine arts to literature. In the 1920s and 1930s, he published several novels, but more important was his work as transmitter of international literary ideas to Finland. Together with his first wife, Kersti Bergroth, he edited the literary journal Sininen kirja (""The Blue Book""; 1927–1930), which was inspired by the writings of John Middleton Murry and Katherine Mansfield. Sininen kirja is the most international literary journal in Finnish history to date and introduced Finland to the most significant modernist writers of the first half of the 20th century (Gottfried Benn, Jean Cocteau, Alfred Döblin, T. S. Eliot, Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Paul Valéry, Virginia Woolf). During the Second World War, Matson worked for the State Communications Agency, which was responsible for disseminating relevant information about Finland to other nations and for informing Finns of relevant developments abroad. It was also tasked with studying the prevailing mood among the population in Finland. In Matson's unpublished wartime diaries, one can see the first symptoms of a shift in Finnish culture away from Germany and towards Anglo-Saxon culture. From the 1940s onwards, Matson recommended new English and American novels as a part of his work as reader for Finnish publishing houses, and he also translated works by Joyce, Hemingway and Steinbeck. With the help of a network of international literary critics, Matson became acquainted with New Criticism, which he introduced to Finland before it became established among academic researchers. He was often critical of academic literary studies, but his seminal essay works Romaanitaide (""On the Prose Novel""; 1947), John Steinbeck (1948), Kaksi mestaria (""Two Masters"", on Tolstoy and Dostoevsky; 1950) as well as his impressive conversational skills were instrumental in introducing knowledge about the principles of the prose novel to several authors (including Väinö Linna, Lauri Viita, and Hannu Salama), and contributed to their views of literature. Matson emphasized the importance of reading and understanding high-quality literature for the wellbeing of society.

    Description: Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire during the years 1808–1917. At this time nationalism as well as other ideologies reached Finland from Europe, which strengthened the willingness to change both in society and on a governmental level. The Fennoman movement, which was a movement focusing both on language and on nationalism, became the core of the Finnish self-perception. The goal was to define Finland as a coherent and separate country in relation to its neighbouring countries. Collecting folk poems and learning to know one’s home country became essential. People saw the Kalevala poems as a way to understand and define the Finnish identity and the history of the Finnish people. Especially young people with a background in academia were intrigued by these ideas. University students collected poems all over the Grand Duchy of Finland as well as in the Russian part of Carelia, in Sweden, Norway and in Ingria. Students who collected these folk poems also wrote travelogues about their travels and all this material was handed over to The Finnish Literature Society. These documents are unique and there has not been much research done on them, especially with the focus on how the young academic generation during the age of autonomy defined their home country, their national self-perception, themselves and the commoners living in the rural parts of the country. This book reviews travelogues written by one hundred university students who travelled in the country collecting folk poems during 1836–1917. The book offers insight into how the students described Finland and what it meant to be Finnish. Travelogues can be defined as a sort of hybrid of texts. They consist of a mixture of letters, journals, biographical texts and travel books. Consequently, the image that the students depict of Finland is in this study based upon research perspectives and methods used in textual research, oral history and travel literature. The travelogues written by students previously evoked the interest of researchers who mainly studied certain traits of poem collectors, tradition bearers or poems. However, the travelogues contain plenty of information about the lives of the people who lived in the areas where the poems were collected. The descriptions of Finland in the travelogues do not represent the “real” 19th century Finland, but instead it is a story written and created by university students. The characteristics that are presented in The Land of Hope are based on how the intelligentsia perceived “real” Finnishness as opposed to the uneducated commoners living in the rural parts of the country. The most notable themes in the travelogues are the state and the future of the society and of being Finnish. Another theme is the otherization of those who were uneducated commoners. These themes describe the fears and hopes that university students had about Finland. They also show us that the travelogues were ideological texts about Finland and Finnishness that united the collectors of folk poetry. This book studies the collection of folk poetry in the context of the ideologies during the age of autonomy and it explains what the collection of poems meant and who were involved in it. Furthermore, the book gives an insight into the possibilities to pursue academic studies and it also presents the most essential sources of students’ knowledge about Finland at that point of time.

    Description: The nine articles in this edited volume [Education and Social Class] scrutinise the class question within the Finnish education system, as a hidden, lived and experienced phenomenon, entwined with power. The book is structured around three topical perspectives. The first part deals with the question of social mobility. Empirical research topics include examples of achieving prestigious fields of education and the inheritance of the most prestigious professions, connections of class position to education through the educational experiences of working-class-based business students, and the ways in which academic world encounters with working-class culture in the university work of working-class and academically educated women. The second part of the book examines education as a form of capital defining the life course and social class. Topics covered include the connections of life stage of adolescence and class position, Bourdieusian analysis of educational choices and class positions, and opportunities for on-the-job learning and self-development in accordance with the class position of wage earners. The third part focuses on the education system and its structures. The dynamics of education and reproduction are analysed by using as empirical research objects the cross-generational reproduction of social relations in the curricula of basic education, the meaning of the language used in school as cultural capital, and the links between class position and perspectives that promote the raising of the age of compulsory education.

    Description: This anthology constitutes the primary report resulting from a three-year innovation project in which the main focus has been on collaboration between preschools and primary schools, and the ‘PP-tjeneste’ (pedagogisk-psykologisk tjeneste, a public service that assists in evaluation of children with special educational and/or psychological needs and helps those working in the educational setting make appropriate accommodations for those needs), and establishing a program in which they jointly develop their competence regarding inclusivity. Researchers from NLA University College, the University of Stavanger and Statped (a national service for special needs education) have formed a partnership to support a range of innovation processes as well as track their progress through data collection and analysis, and thereby respond to the profile set forth in the national strategy, ‘Kompetanseløftet for spesialpedagogikk og inkluderende praksis’ (Enhancements in special pedagogic and inclusive practices), initiated during the project period. The experiences presented in this anthology will therefore be relevant and of interest to many in both the higher educational sector and the municipalities.

    Description: The nineteenth century has been called an age of monuments. In some places even one piece made a difference. This book is a study of the intellectual background and physical making of Finland’s first public sculpture, the statue of Professor Henrik Gabriel Porthan by Carl Eneas Sjöstrand. The idealised but sombre Porthan was born under the influence of German neoclassicism. Development on the project was slow but sure. The Swedish artist had to be supported over three years while he was putting together his first monumental piece in Munich and Rome, after which came another three years wait before the cast arrived to Finland. The bronze sculpture, commissioned by the Finnish Literary Society and raised by public subscriptions from people of all classes, was unveiled in the city of Turku in September 1864. Finns took some pride in the fact that, unlike other nations that had raised monuments to kings and generals, here the first place was given to a scholar. In this study Sjöstrand’s pioneering bronze is placed in a wider context and compared with works by his precursors and contemporaries in the international sculptor colony of Rome.

The book discusses the novels of Katja Kettu, Sofi Oksanen, Elina Hirvonen and Emmi Itäranta, where historical and collective traumas meet stories of personal vulnerability. Traumatic Memory in Contemporary Prose Fiction addresses war traumas and marks left by terrorism, colonialism, domestic violence and sexual violence, and analyses the aspects of ecological trauma and future threats.     Description: In the current digital media environment, legacy newspapers and their readers are often regarded as obsolete. For media executives and many journalists, the future of news is exclusively digital. Given the economic uncertainties facing the industry, news producers’ eyes are focused on audience metrics and their capacity to shed light on readers' preferences. This book sets out to analyse news reading from the perspective of the audience. Employing interviews as well as the so called obsläs method, it examines how readers of two Finnish regional newspapers, Hämeen Sanomat and Karjalainen, navigate in three distinct architectures of the newspaper: printed, digital replica and online news application. The assumption underlying the analysis is that each of these user interfaces favour somewhat differing reading protocols and routines. The empirical analysis responds to the big question pondered by editors and publishers: Where are the readers? It appears that most of the participants of the study tended to move from one architecture to another depending on their contextual and situational needs. In this comparison, the strengths of a printed newspaper seemed evident for many, while the balance between the pros and cons of the digital environment was more mixed. In addition to reporting the findings of the empirical audience study, this book evaluates the future of newspapers in the context of economic statistics and media policies. While the newspaper business in Finland struggles with increasing costs and volatility of income, it may well rely on the robust newspaper reading culture among the Finnish reading public.

Right from the start of work as a composer, music as a form of recognition has been central, along with an impulse to disrupt boundaries between established forms and conventions. This has also been a guiding principle behind the contributions to this anthology, where the goal has not only been to honor one individual, but to be a source of new insight. Music and literature are about the creation and dissemination of meaning. In this sense, it is paradoxical to talk about silence as a hallmark of certain art forms. But anyone who reads or listens actively knows that there is more to be gained from art than what lies in the immediate and explicit expression. The voice (in a broad sense) finds its complimentary opposite in silence. The first part of the anthology provides a brief theoretical background for interdisciplinary research into music and literature. The contributions that follow do not view artworks simply as finished products, but as parts of a living practice in which the composer, author, music, text, performer and audience all meet. In the next part, we are drawn into the workshops of composers and musicians who reflect on the music of Magnar Åm, as well as their own in light of this. In the final part, we cross the border between art and other forms of experience, with eudaimonia as a unifying concept: How should one live a complete and meaningful life? This book has been written by researchers in a variety of fields such as literature, music, natural science and outdoor life, as well as practicing artists: composers, musicians and writers. Between research and art, through scientific articles and professional essays, a conversation arises that engenders recognition across fixed boundaries.

In this book the text corpus in Kielipankki concerning Päätalo’s works is introduced to the readers, as well as the possibilities of digital text mining. This book includes scientific articles concerning the works of Kalle Päätalo. It also gives ideas for the research that can be carried out in the future. The authors of this book are researchers in the fields of history, linguistics and literature, respectively. The research results presented in this book speak for the fact that the Iijoki series is a significant source material for future research, for example from the point of view of oral history, language variation, metalanguage, swearing and the reader’s reception. The possibilities for future research seem to be quite plentiful.

    Description: In this book [titled Home, welfare work and vulnerability] the authors take the reader on welfare workers’ home visits to clients in need of support in their living. Welfare workers refer to professionals in health and social care who in the book are represented among others by social workers, social care workers and nurses. The main concepts of the book are home, welfare work and vulnerability and these are contemplated from different angles. Welfare work entails encountering people who are in vulnerable situations in the midst of their everyday lives. They may need support in coping with their mental health, with physical illnesses, with the challenges of achieving sobriety and recovery or perhaps with the difficulties accompanying old age. On the one hand their ability to act is limited and weak but on the other they have many kinds of strengths and resources. The book addresses a significant turning point in welfare services and work at which the objective is defined as the right of every individual to their own home and making living at home feasible for as long as possible. In the last fifty years or so many societal factors have made possible the dismantling of institutions, the reduction of places and the shortening of stays in institutions, the further development of care in the community, the construction of small residential and care facilities and most recently the further development of services to be taken into people’s homes. The last stage of this dismantling of institutions is referred to in the book as the “home turn”. As a societal change the home turn is complex – and that is how it is approached in the book. When one’s own home is the main place in which welfare policy and work are implemented, it is important to scrutinize more closely what actually occurs there and what special issues are connected to this given context. The book offers a timely point of view on the development of welfare services and the grass-root level welfare work done in the homes. It draws on interaction research based on ethnomethodology and human geography. Research data consist of recordings of home visits, researcher’s field diaries and interviews with clients and workers. The work includes both chapters providing conceptual and theoretical overviews and empirical research on the encounters between client and worker(s) on home visits. Welfare work accomplished in people’s homes entails many tensions and ethical issues which are analysed in the book and made visible through the means of research.

    Description: This edited volume discusses multiple job holding as part of Finnish working life. The articles in this book examine this little researched phenomenon through a wide range of empirical data. Based on Statistics Finland's register data, different ways of combining jobs are classified. Interview material sheds light on the conditions for holding multible jobs. A new perspective is provided by the chaos theory of careers. According to the results of the study, very different paths lead to becoming a multiple job holder. The combination of jobs is influenced by the life path and interests of the individual, as well as by constraints and opportunities available. Motives can also be linked to professional networks, decisions made by immediate family, coincidences or whims. This book helps to understand the diversity of ways of working. At the same time, it illustrates the challenges faced by those who work multiple jobs as they try to operate within simpler models and categorisations of labour. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the changing nature of work, especially researchers, students and policy-makers.

    Description: The volume is a comprehensive handbook of oral history and memory studies in Finland. The Finnish research field has originally emerged at the collaborative intersection of history, folklore studies, and ethnology.     Description: How can we be sure that the food we buy in grocery stores won’t make us sick? The institutions, laws and regulatory systems put in place to safeguard that food is safe to consume are the result of a long and complex process. This book takes a close look at that process and at how various actors and institutions – we call them ‘food’s facilitators’ – have worked to ensure that the food we eat is fresh, healthy and safe. Food’s Facilitators explores how modern foods and systems for food can be seen as the result of a series of administrative efforts and negotiations over how such food is produced. The authors examine laws and regulations, expertise, technologies, and media that contribute to binding the various modern industrialized food systems together. Their subject matter ranges from cookbooks and schools for housewives that have greatly influenced the Norwegian diet, to the industrial production of foods, freezer technology, date marking, and quality assessment. In addition, the authors look at the presentation of food on television as informational activity as well as debates about industrially produced ingredients and food products like margarine, artificial vanilla and farmed salmon. Through these examples the book illustrates how regulation, quality and information became necessary cornerstones in the evolution of the food industry. The authors have backgrounds in science and technology studies, history, anthropology, sociology and media science.     Description: What gave rise to the Norse legal system? When? And where were the meeting places under this system located? These are questions that have long remained unanswered in Norwegian and Northern European history. An overriding theme of the book is establishing when this legal system arose and how it developed over time at the local and regional levels. Central topics include the localization of assembly sites in the landscape and how these sites became important to the consolidation of power structures and, later on, the royal system of governance. The ‘things’ are discussed in relation to successive political and economic structures as well as the influence of conditions within settlements and society.     Description: This book, written by 12 authors, asks: Who governed the Nordic towns from c. 1500 to 1800? The book is inspired by pivotal studies undertaken by Finn-Einar Eliassen in the late 1990s concerning the progression of family dynasties in ruling several small towns in Norway from c. 1600–1800. Eliassen ascertained that 8–10 small Norwegian towns happened to be dominated by two-three families in economic, social, political and administrative matters. He maintained that ownership of the very ground upon which the town was built came to define a privatized lordship, not only in Norway but also in various peripheries in central and northern Europe. Our investigations explore quite opposite patterns. The Norwegian landlords more effectively dominated their towns – compared with landlords in Danish, Finnish, and Baltic towns – by actually living and working there, and due to their vast engagement in lumber trade and shipping. In other parts of the Nordic region the landlords normally did not reside in the towns or get involved in business in the town district. However, they possessed other types of power and authority. Finally, we assert that the paths to power and wealth in privatized monopoly towns lay in the establishment of social networks, the ownership of strategic land estates in connection with trade, industry and transport, and, above all, controlling the credit system that bound the peasants and other social groups to supply their masters with labour, lumber, agricultural products, and so on. However, the power of the dynasties had obvious limitations.
    Description: Denne boka kretser rundt spørsmålet om hvem som styrte de nordiske byene ca. 1500–1800. Boka – skrevet av tolv forfattere – er inspirert av Finn-Einar Eliassens pionerarbeid fra 1990-årene om familiedynastier i norske byer. Eliassen kom fram til at åtte–ti norske småbyer i perioden 1600–1800 ble dominert av to–tre familier økonomisk, sosialt, politisk, administrativt og kulturelt, noe han mener også har vært mønstre i periferier i Nord- og Sentral-Europa. Kilden til makt lå i det å eie bygrunnen. Våre undersøkelser viser andre mønstre. De norske godseierbyene ca. 1500–1800 skilte seg ut fra tilsvarende byer i resten av Norden på flere måter. I Norge kom byherrene til å styre og dominere mer, de var sterkt involvert i næringsvirksomheten, og de bodde i byene. I resten av Norden ble godseierbyene preget av andre økonomiske eliter og av at godseierne ikke residerte i byene. På den andre siden hadde danske, svenske og finske godseiere andre maktmuligheter enn de norske. Samtidig avdekker våre funn at det å eie grunnen ofte ikke var hovedkilden til makt og rikdom i en by. Dynastier og eliter fant ressursene i sosiale nettverk og strategisk eierskap i næringer og kredittsystemer. Like viktig var det at byherrenes makt i Norden på flere måter var begrenset.

    Description: Ministers, deacons, catechists and cantors are among the church professionals laypeople meet in the context of worship, other church services, and congregational activities. These professionals are upholding a social mission, influencing church practices, setting the tone and developing programs and services within their congregations. What are the hallmarks of the different professions within the church? What insight should church professionals have into each other’s identities and areas of expertise to collaborate and participate in interdisciplinary teamwork? And how, in practical terms, should they be lead? Profession and Leadership in the Church of Norway: Organizing Work of a Church in Change provides sociological and administrative insights into general and contextual phenomena in the church professions. Relationships between professions, administration and organization in the Church of Norway are analyzed in light of empirical studies and an institutional theoretical framework. Internasjonalisering i lærerutdanningen dreier seg gjerne om internasjonal praksis, og mange lærerutdanningsinstitusjoner har drevet med praksis i det globale sør i ulike varianter gjennom mange år. Bidragene i antologien er alle skrevet av fagansatte ved norske lærerutdanninger, som kommer fra ulike fagfelt som engelsk, norsk, pedagogikk, sosiologi, antropologi og samfunnsgeografi. Dette er den første antologien som omhandler forskning på praksis og lengre opphold i det globale sør, og den henvender seg til en bred målgruppe: fra politikere og byråkrater som legger til rette for studentmobilitet i høyere utdanning, til forskere, profesjonsutdannere og studenter. For profesjonsutdanninger som i dag har praksis i sør, vil bidragene kunne gi viktig innsikt i forberedelse før, oppfølging underveis og refleksjoner i etterkant av praksisoppholdet.     Description: Nothing exceptional happened in front of the youth association building in Kalajoki on 9 September 1953. There was a minor confrontation between regional police forces and local youth, but hundreds of similar events happened in small municipalities across Finland. The event took about ten minutes, nobody was seriously hurt, and collective feelings quickly calmed down. However, after extensive investigations, the regional prosecutor thought otherwise and prosecuted half a dozen local men for rebellion against the state in January 1954. The district court agreed. The municipality was shocked, and the Finnish society was taken by surprise. The case ended up in Supreme Court. This book analyses why and how the last rebellion in the history of Finland occurred in a tiny municipality on the west coast of Finland. The analysis is based on historical microsociology that integrates the insights of microhistory and microsociology into event structure analysis and collective memory studies.

    Description: Matti Kurikka (1863–1915) is a multi-dimensional and controversial character in Finnish history. He was a playwright, a journalist, a socialist, and a theosophist, as well as a speaker for sexual emancipation and women's rights. Kurikka was born in Ingria, and his activities spanned not only Finland, but also Australia and North America, in both of which he led utopian communities. This biographical study explores Kurikka as a literary and political figure and a builder of utopias, whose life opens fascinating views on the societal and cultural currents of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book critically re-evaluates earlier research on Kurikka and highlights forgotten phases of his life by using new source materials found in three continents. The sources include digitized newspapers and periodicals, Kurikka's plays and non-fictional books, oral history, and political cartoons.

    Description: Fordommer sitter i språket og i måten vi snakker på. De kommer til uttrykk på forskjellige måter og kan brukes både som humor og hatefulle ytringer. Ofte bruker vi fordommer uten at vi engang er klar over det. Men hva er egentlig fordommer? Og hvem rammes av fordommene? Dette er relevante spørsmål i dagens skole. I Fagfornyelsen legges det vekt på at skolen «skal fremme demokratiske verdier og holdninger som motvekt mot fordommer og diskriminering». For å kunne jobbe aktivt med forebyggende arbeid i skolen er det derfor nødvendig å vite noe om hvordan og hvorfor fordommer oppstår, hvordan de brukes, og hvem som rammes. I Fordommer i skolen: Gruppekonstruksjoner, utenforskap og inkludering undersøker vi hvordan fordommer kommer til uttrykk blant elever, hvilke strategier lærere har for å håndtere fordomsfulle utsagn, og hvordan fordommer brukes og spilles ut i klasserommet. I boken analyseres også hvordan fordommer og ulike forståelser av fenomenet inngår som tema i opplæringsloven og i læreplanverket, og hvordan ulike minoritetsgrupper har blitt og fremdeles blir fremstilt i skolens læreverk. Et viktig formål med boken er å gi konkrete eksempler på utforskende undervisning og mulige undervisningsstrategier for å kunne forebygge og motvirke fordommer i skolen i dag. Boken er forskningsbasert og inneholder bidrag fra en rekke ulike fagfelt. Bidragene er relevante for lærerutdanning, lektorutdanning og PPU. Boken er også aktuell for skoleledere, rådgivere og lærere både i ungdomsskolen og på videregående trinn.

    Description: Finnish psychiatric practice has been heavily based on institutionalization, and mental hospitals have played important cultural and historical roles in Finland. Our multidisciplinary research focuses on the bodily, spatial, affective, and multisensory aspects of the memories of patients, relatives, staff, and their children. The memories were collected and archived in the Finnish Literature Society in 2014–2015. These 92 written pieces cover the period from the 1930s to the 2010s. They reflect significant changes in Finnish psychiatry and provide crucial insights into the various meanings of mental hospitals in people’s lives, and the social and cultural forces that shape attitudes to and ideas about mental health problems, psychiatric care, and service users today. Drawing on our backgrounds in history, artistic research, and visual, cultural and literary studies, we provide new ways of reading and interpreting the memories and experiences in psychiatry. The study discusses memory, mental hospitals as lived spaces, the history of Finnish psychiatry and the relation between the memories of the different groups of writers. The chapters approach memories from the perspectives of affects and atmospheres, violence and abuse, everyday life at the hospital in the 1930s, feelings of fear and safety in the memories of the children of the staff, and the historically and culturally contingent tensions between hospitals and homes.

    Description: Finnish Lapland is a historical borderland of Finnish and Sámi cultures. Such a region offers various social-political identifications for people to choose: people may see it possible to identify as Finnish, Laplanders, Lappish or Sámi, for instance. However, the choices have social and political limits, and some identifications are more contested than others. The book examines the processes of identifications in the middle parts of Lapland, just south of the region defined as Sámi homeland in Finland. While the study reveals differences and nuances in people’s thinking, it also shows that there is a recognizable sense of shared cultural specifity around the region. Lapland is conceptualized as an extraordinary place with unusual nature and history, characterized by particular livelihoods (such as reindeer herding) and lively cultural interaction. The book concludes that while Lapland is extraordinary as a historical dwelling region of indigenous Sámi, it may be politically significant to recognize it as a unique borderland of cultures with features of its own.

Samlet illustrerer kapitlene i denne antologien hvor komplekst bærekraftbegrepet er, og hvor vanskelig det er å nå målene. Et viktig funn er at vi må handle enhetlig om vi skal kunne realisere bærekraftsmålene, da de griper inn i hverandre, og det ikke nytter å løse dem enkeltvis. I tillegg må det forskning til, slik at vi som samfunn kan finne de beste løsningene for å innfri bærekraftsmålene. Denne antologien er et bidrag til denne forskningen. Forfatterne er i all hovedsak tilknyttet universitets- og høgskoleinstitusjoner i Kyst-Norge, fra Haugesund i sør til Kristiansund i nord. Unntakene representerer det mangfoldet av samarbeidspartnere som disse miljøene har forbindelser til både regionalt og nasjonalt. Redaktørene for boken er Heidi Hogset, Johanne Alteren, Bjørn Jæger og Solveig Straume. Redaktørene er tilknyttet Høgskolen i Molde – vitenskapelig høgskole i logistikk.

    Description: Morsmålsfaget er stort og mangfoldig og omfatter mange deldisipliner. Det utgjør et «fagmassiv» som lærere, lærerutdannere og forskere må orientere seg i. I denne antologien er det samlet 13 artikler som demonstrerer eksempler på hvordan det både kan undervises i og forskes på morsmålsfaget. Boka inneholder artikler innenfor språkdidaktikk, litteraturdidaktikk og skrivedidaktikk og har empiri fra alle nivå i utdanningssystemet i Norge, Sverige, Danmark og Finland. Antologien speiler også at morsmålsfaget er i stadig bevegelse, og nye disipliner kommer til. Derfor har vi for eksempel med bidrag som digital skriving i sosiolingvistisk perspektiv, sanglyrikk som multimodalt uttrykk og pedagogisk transspråking. Antologien har blitt til i etterkant av en nordisk konferanse om morsmålsdidaktikk ved NTNU, Trondheim, i 2019. Konferansekomiteen var den samme som redaksjonen for denne antologien. Både konferansen og boka inngår i en rekke slike arrangement som går på omgang i morsmålsdidaktikkmiljøene i Norge, Sverige, Danmark og Finland.     Description: Narrative After Postmodernism takes a critical and practical look at the cultural theories of what comes after postmodernism or the postmodern. Alongside contemporary literary authors, the anthology studies diverse contemporary textual phenomena from TV shows to online fan theories and survivalist blogs. The essays compiled in this anthology tentatively apply the theories of the post-postmodern to contemporary texts to see how they might open up for analysis within their new theoretical frameworks or challenge them.The introduction, co-written by all the authors of this volume, introduces the most influential theories of post-postmodernism and contextualizes them within broader intellectual trends of the early 21st Century. The three essays comprising the first part of the volume discuss some of the theories of the postmodern in relation to contemporary works that seem to challenge them. Yet they also strive to clarify and sharpen some of the ideas proposed in the theories of the post-postmodern.The second part of the volume aims to show that it is not only the contemporary texts that move beyond the postmodern – the ways of reading literature and interpreting artworks in different media are also changing. The essays in the second part of the volume inquire about the effects of the contemporary literary culture on the methods of interpretation and ways of reading.

    Description: Contrary to the secularism thesis of the 20th century, religion did not disappear from the Western experience. Rather, religiosity took on new forms, which emphasized individuality, experientiality, and corporeality, and highlighted lifestyle consumption. These new spiritualities came to be understood as the opposite of religiosity: people identified themselves as being not religious, but spiritual. The book examines new spiritualities as a concept, a phenomenon, and a subject of research. It introduces the history of the concept and the different past approaches in the research field, and discusses the diversity of the phenomenon of new spiritualities, especially in 21st century Finland, through various case studies. The book shows the multiple ways in which new spiritualities intertwine with different sectors of the society and blur spirituality’s boundary with religion, health care, art, and popular culture, for example. The book is the first book-length presentation in Finnish of the field of new spiritualities.

    Description: Sofi Oksanen is the most visible and widely discussed Finnish author of the 21st century, yet her novels have gained less attention than her public performances. This study shifts the focus from the author’s persona to her literary art, proposing to read Oksanen’s fiction from the methodological viewpoint of the rhetorical theory of narrative. Accordingly, Oksanen’s six novels published to date – Stalinin lehmät, Baby Jane, Puhdistus, Kun kyyhkyset katosivat, Norma, and Koirapuisto – are considered as examples of authorial rhetoric and ethics, as narrative and textual constructions, and as affective readerly experiences. Instead of only following the rhetorical theory’s emphasis on character, plot, and progression, however, the study develops a new kind of narrative rhetoric, which also pays attention to language and politics. In the study, Sofi Oksanen emerges as a feminist narrative artist, who employs fiction as a serious rhetorical resource in order to say something worthwhile about the past history as well as the contemporary world.

    Description: This anthology deals with co-singing (Norwegian: samsang) in different life stages and various settings in a Scandinavian context. Co-singing forms an essential part of our shared cultural heritage. Co-singing involves all forms of singing-activities in which people coexist, and characterizes in various ways human companionship throughout the course of life, from cradle to grave. From a critical analytical perspective, the research in this anthology sheds light on several themes related to the importance and value of co-singing practice in terms of sensemaking and experiencing coherence in life. This involves musical, physical, psychological, emotional, cognitive, ethical, cultural, and social factors. The research project examines for instance the position of singing activities in Norwegian kindergartens and schools, co-singing and health-related topics, co-singing from a gender perspective, co-singing from a multicultural perspective, co-singing activities in light of motivation and coping, and also low-threshold, flexible daily life singing activities for persons with dementia and their relatives. Choir singing in various life stages, from childhood to age of retirement, are also explored in several chapters. With its broadly arranged and pluralistic approach, this anthology provides a multi-faceted contribution to the development of knowledge in the research field of music associated with the power and legitimacy of co-singing at the individual, group, and societal levels. The contributing authors have their practical and scientific experience from higher music education within the fields of music pedagogy, music performance, music therapy, music and health, and also from other types of cultural and musical practices.

    Description: Why do children and young people need art? How do we rationalize the significance of art in society? This anthology is based on research carried out by members of the multidisciplinary research group Art and Young People at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Agder in Kristiansand. The contributing authors argue in favor of research into children’s and young people’s actual experience of art and artistic practices as well as issues within the arts that affect them indirectly. The book’s subtitle indicates a desire to employ a wider understanding of the notions of art and childhood and youth, which is also evident in the themes, content and research approaches it includes. The chapters span both children’s and young people’s interaction with visual art, music, theater within and outside the context of preschool, school and extracurricular programs, and projects that are more on the periphery of these areas. The authors are thus not just interested in the importance of art to children and young people, but to society in general as well. This anthology is aimed at readers across a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, but will also be of interest to all those concerned with art’s place and meaning in schools, in society, and in research itself.

    Description: Human lives are crucially shaped by encounters of otherness – or, rather, various othernesses. This book explores the ethical challenge of developing an appropriate and respectful relation to other human beings by analyzing a number of historical and cultural cases of relating to the other. The topics range from barbarism, racist stereotypes, female rhetoric, and vampires to philosophical analyses of Finnish writers like Eino Leino and Väinö Linna, and from lyrical depictions of pain to an “antitheodicist” reflection on Primo Levi’s Holocaust writing. A chapter on what it means to take a critical distance to other human beings in the context of the covid-19 pandemic concludes the volume. The authors approach these diverse issues (which are all aspects of the same basic problem of understanding and acknowledging otherness) from the perspective of an interdisciplinary humanistic reflection integrating literary analysis and philosophical argumentation.

    Description: Press, Profession and Politics is a festschrift in honor of Paul Bjerke, who celebrated his 70th birthday on 2 October 2022. Bjerke has had a far-reaching career in journalism, research and as a social commentator. This festschrift consists of research articles, professional literature, and congratulatory texts from colleagues and collaborators in the media and academic communities. The anthology includes new analyses of various aspects of professional journalistic practice and reflections on the realities of journalism today. Three key concepts are central to an understanding of Paul Bjerke’s research work: press, profession and politics. These concepts comprise the title of the festschrift and are also used to structure its content, with the goal in mind of providing insight into some of the work Bjerke has contributed, as well as linking the texts in this anthology to his research activities. In addition, we gain insight into his many years as a journalist, news editor, and finally, the editor of Klassekampen. This book will be of interest to media researchers and researchers in other disciplines concerned with the function of the media in society, as well as students and practitioners.

    Description: Det norske forskningsprosjektet Digitization and Diversity – Potentials and Challenges for Diversity in the Culture and Media Sector (DnD) spør: Hvordan påvirker digitaliseringen ulike mangfoldsdimensjoner i kultur- og mediesektoren? Kapitlene i denne boken belyser digitalisering og mangfoldsproblematikk både kritisk, empirisk, teoretisk, historisk og politisk. De har det til felles at de presenterer perspektiver og resultater som viser at mangfold har blitt en mye mer heterogen og sammensatt utfordring etter digitaliseringen. Det har oppstått nye spenninger mellom homogenisering og mangfold. Vi har konsentrert oss om digitaliseringen i fire bransjer: bok og bibliotek, museum, film og kino samt pressen med vekt på lokalavisene. Grunnen til at akkurat disse bransjene ble valgt, er at Norge var spesielt tidlig ute med digitalisering her – de fremstår som eksemplariske case. Å opprettholde og å styrke et mangfold av stemmer, innhold og uttrykksformer samt å sørge for tilgjengelighet og et mangfoldig forbruk demografisk sett, er en av hovedgrunnene til at vi har offentlige støtteordninger for kultur- og mediesektoren. Spørsmålet om hvordan mangfoldet «oppfører seg» i en digitalisert kultur- og mediesektor, befinner seg derfor midt i denne politikkens kjernevirksomhet. Digitalisering forfølges av sin dobbeltgjenger – eldre praksiser, forretningsmodeller og forestillinger – på godt og vondt. Digitalisering er ikke en ren foreteelse, men en uren legering av praksiser. Skjønnlitteratur og sakprosa har begge vært viktige våpen i denne maktkampen. Forfatterne tar opp ekskluderings- og inkluderingsprosesser rettet mot ulike grupper som innvandrere, kvinner, samer, homofile og jøder. Gjennom å løfte fram flere minoriserte stemmer ønsker forfatterne å nyansere mangfoldet i mangfoldet; flere av tekstene de drøfter her, vitner om interseksjonalitet, hvor flere identiteter overlapper i ett og samme individ.

    Description: This study explores the narration of existential feelings, or feelings of being in the world, in post-war Finnish prose fiction. The book presents five case studies which address modern individuals’ struggles in boundary situations of their lives. Rigorous readings of the works of Kerttu-Kaarina Suosalmi, Lassi Nummi, Marko Tapio, Tyyne Saastamoinen and Eeva-Liisa Manner all show the influence of French existentialism and its predecessors on post-war Finnish modernism for the first time in literary studies. The outsider figures and their experiences of the absurd, which have enticed the cultural imagination since ancient cults and the Book of Job, connect to the atmosphere of shared melancholy in post-war Finnish culture and society. The study participates in the rich contemporary debates on the effects of literature by focusing on less-discussed aspects of bodily feeling, affect, emotion and mood in late Finnish modernism. The book’s methodological contribution to narrative theory is that it combines a phenomenological analysis of reading with a rhetorical theory of narrative and politically informed, multidisciplinary emotion studies. The five case studies show how modernist outsider prose fiction in Finland resorts to irony, metafiction, allegory and the imaginative to generate ethically challenging narrative tension and an ambivalence of negative and positive emotion in readers. The opposing impulses of the aesthetic response produce an openness of interpretation. This openness provides us with the possibility of a more complex cultural understanding of emotion and ethics in the lives of strangers within literature and outside it.

    Description: Society’s use and management of water relies on professional expertise spanning diverse fields: from biology and technology to economics and law. This book examines current issues related to regulating water through chapters summarizing various sets of regulation as well as chapters that take a scientific deep dive into selected themes. The diversity of professional expertise is also reflected in the law aspect. We explore such subjects as surface runoff, natural disasters, drinking water, groundwater, salmon, hydropower, and human rights, as well as general impact assessment requirements and duty of knowledge in environmental law administration. A key objective of the book has been to provide an interdisciplinary understanding of the legal circumstances associated with water, and in addition, deliberate the pros and cons of some of the current regulations. This book will be particularly useful for those who in various ways support and facilitate procedures within the public sector at both the national and municipal levels. It will also be useful for private sector actors seeking familiarity with legal questions that can arise in relation to public administration and other private actors. From a broader perspective, we hope the book can help to throw light on conflicts between different interests and groups within society that occur, for example, when introducing fees, special injunctions against private actors, and requirements for knowledge basis. This book project is the result of legal research conducted at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and is supplemented by national expertise in several areas. It has been edited by Steinar Taubøll, a professor at NMBU’s Department of Property and Law. Taubøll has a background in both law and the natural sciences, and extensive experience with interdisciplinary work.
    Description: Håndtering og bruk av vann i samfunnet krever et faglig mangfold fra biologi og teknikk til økonomi og juss. Denne boken drøfter aktuelle temaer knyttet til rettslig regulering av vann, både i form av oversiktskapitler om ulike regelsett og gjennom vitenskapelige dypdykk i utvalgte temaer. Den faglige spennvidden gjenspeiler seg også innen det juridiske. I boken finner man stoff om overvannshåndtering, naturfare, drikkevann, grunnvann, villaks, kraftutbygging, menneskerettigheter, samt om generelle utredningskrav og kunnskapsplikter i miljørettsforvaltning. Et sentralt siktemål er å bygge opp tverrfaglig forståelse av gjeldende juridiske forhold knyttet til vann, og dessuten sette noen av dagens reguleringer under debatt. Boken retter seg særlig til de ressurspersonene som på ulike måter støtter saksbehandlingen i stat og kommune. Boken antas også å være nyttig for private aktører som vil gjøre seg mer kjent med rettsspørsmål som kan oppstå i forhold til forvaltningen og til andre private aktører. I et bredere perspektiv er det dessuten ønskelig at boken kan bidra til å belyse konflikter mellom ulike hensyn og grupper i samfunnet, for eksempel ved innføring av gebyrer, pålegg rettet mot private, innføring av tyngende vilkår og krav til kunnskap og faktagrunnlag. Bokprosjektet springer ut av den juridiske forskningen ved Norges miljø- og biovitenskapelige universitet, og har i tillegg knyttet til seg nasjonal spisskompetanse på mange temaer. Bokas redaktør er dosent Steinar Taubøll ved Institutt for eiendom og juss ved NMBU, som har naturfaglig og juridisk utdannelse, samt lang erfaring med tverrfaglig arbeid.

    Description: Valco (1976–1980) was a state-owned company that manufactured cathode ray tubes for the television industry. The company’s scandalous failure has been widely identified as one of the largest investment errors in Finland’s economic history. This book is the first in-depth study of the roots, events, and consequences of that project. This study analyses Valco from a microhistorical perspective, looking at the numerous factors that led to its failure, from the company’s founding process to investigations after its demise. These events are linked to broader phenomena in economic and business history, such as the changing economic policy of the government and the emergence of global supply chains in the electronics industry. Valco is a significant single case with a concrete impact on Finland’s economic history. First, it changed the general perception of state-owned companies and, because of this, also more general perceptions of the role of the state in the economy. As a result, the initiative to develop the electronics industry was transferred to private companies such as Nokia. Second, Valco’s case revealed the problems of state ownership of companies in a very concrete way. Due to Valco’s failure, the objectives of state ownership were clarified, and the corporate governance system was modernised. In this way, Valco is linked to the modernization of Finnish state capitalism from the 1970s onwards.

    Description: Collective mobilization arises in the context of social movements and people’s desire for change. In this book, collective mobilization is discussed in light of a variety of perspectives, theories and methodological entryways. Grassroots mobilization is an important principle in community work along with citizen collaboration, influence, and co-creation in the development of local environments and communities. This anthology explores current issues related to welfare policies and practices, as well as global challenges associated with environmental and societal problems. The authors show how community work as a subject, theory, method, and field of research can contribute to greater understanding and development of sustainable solutions. The chapters include examples from a minority organization’s work to counteract negative social control, peer-support consultants’ contributions in treatment programs, young persons’ entry into and resolution of conflicts on social media, union organization of women in India, and neighborhood development planning in urban areas. With Freire’s consciousness-raising teachings on teamwork and Putnam’s and Bourdieu’s ideas about social capital as an underpinning, the authors examine how collective mobilization happens and how it is exercised.
