Notes: As a part of a research project on the mass transfer in liquid pulsed sieve-tray extraction columns (PSE), the diameters and hold-ups of the drops were measured: the drop size using a suction technique, with photoelectric detection, which was adapted to the special boundary conditions of the PSE; the integral hold-up by the pressure difference between the lower and upper parts of the column. Since experimental results cannot be described by known calculation formulae for the Sauter mean diameter and the hold-up, a new method of calculation was developed. It is phenomenologically based on high-speed photographs of the drop motion on a sieve tray. The mathematical-physical model allows the prediction of drop size and hold-up within certain limits, while the possible different operating regimes of the PSE, i.e. the mixer-settler and dispersion regimes can also be estimated.

Notes: Distillation columns with vertical partitions can separate a feed mixture into 3 or 4 pure fractions. Compared to other column arrangements, their investment costs and energy consumption are lower. Production columns show good results and are easily controlled. Conventional distillation columns produce only 2 pure product streams at the top and at the bottom of the column. Side products are contaminated by light or heavy components, depending on the location of the side stream in the rectifying or stripping section. This disadvantage is set aside by using a distillation column with a vertical partition. The internal separation wall prevents lateral mixing of liquid and vapour in the central part of the column, forming there separate feed and outlet sections. In the presence of a vertical partition, 3 or 4 pure fractions can be obtained in a single distillation step. This is particularly advantageous when heat sensitive components are to be separated. On account of good thermodynamic properties, the energy consumption is 20 to 35% lower than that of other distillation arrangements. The control behaviour is similar or better than that of conventional distillation columns.

Notes: Fouling and/or scaling of heat transfer surfaces causes serious problems in industry. Prevention of fouling is therefore essential for technical (considerable deterioration of heat transfer) and also economic reasons (increased costs). In order to provide successful countermeasures, it is, however, necessary to obtain more detailed information on the physical, chemical and biological processes which produce fouling. Based on the already known fouling mechanisms, it is shown that a satisfactory prediction of fouling behaviour of heat exchangers is not yet possible. This contribution presents a physical model for the description of fouling, caused by sedimentation and crystallization. It is assumed that, during fouling, deposition and removal processes overlap. In order to verify the theoretical considerations, experiments were carried out on a test rig, which could also be used for field experiments. Aqueous CaSO4 solutions served as experimental liquids. A comparison of experimental and calculated fouling factors shows a satisfactory agreement.

Notes: A one-stage model of the formation of primary bubbles is presented in which the bubble volume is deduced from an equilibrium of buoyancy, viscosity, inertia and surface tension forces. In contrast to the two-stage model, presented by Kumar and Kuloor, it was not assumed that the drag coefficient in bubble expansion can be described by the same constants as in the steady-state bubble ascent. The constants were adapted in such a way that the introduction of an additional bubble volume was not necessary. It was demonstrated that this model describes the bubble formation in gravitational and centrifugal fields equally well and, furthermore, is also applicable to structurally viscous liquids, provided that the effective shear gradient \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \mathop {\rm \gamma }\limits^. = \frac{1}{6}({\rm \Delta \rho }gzd_{\rm B} /{\rm \eta }) $$\end{document} is calculated from the equilibrium of shearing and buoyancy forces. The model is based on the assumption of a constant volumetric flow rate during bubble formation and, for this reason, a minimum Froude number is necessary in analogy to the weeping limit for sieve plates. The normalized presentation permits simple operation. The possibility of applying the model to drop formation was confirmed by comparison of experimental values with those, predicted by the model.

Notes: A 0.5 MW spray-dry scrubbing FGD pilot plant was used in the study of spray dryer performance over a wide range of operating conditions. Experimental findings were compared with a spray dryer model. During operation with large excesses of lime, the SO2 absorption was limited by gas phase diffusion. At operation with a shortage of lime, the rate limiting step was the dissolution rate of lime. In addition, the flow regime in a spray dryer can be best described as well mixed. The SO2 level in the flue gas was found to exert no direct effect on the efficiency of SO2 removal. The observed effects are attributed solely to the changes in the drying process, due to the inter-dependence of slurry composition and SO2 concentration.

Notes: When crude oil is vacuum distilled, about 30% of the feed remain as low value residue. Hydrocracking can upgrade this residue into valuable light hydrocarbons. The hydrocracking could be optimized catalytically, if the residue were not to contain the metals vanadium and nickel that poison the catalyst. This contribution shows that continuous extraction of the residue with ethyl acetate yields a fraction with low metal content, while an asphaltene fraction with the remaining metal content is filtered off.

Notes: A new equipment for the measurement of virial coefficients of pure substances and binary mixtures is described. It consists of an improved modification of the set-up proposed by Eucken and Meyer in 1929. The development is based on a critical review of the existing methods particularly with respect to adsorption effects. In order to reduce the influence of adsorption on the accuracy of virial coefficients, an optimum range for gas density is recommended. The accuracy of the virial coefficients is better than 20 cm3 mol-1. The set-up was employed for the measurement of virial coefficients of acetone and hexane in the range from 352.95 to 393.85 K. The results are in excellent agreement with data published in literature. Furthermore, cross-virial coefficients of the binary system acetone/hexane were measured and interpreted.

Notes: The influence of electrolytes, which are dissolved in the aqueous absorbent and do not react with nitrogen oxides, on the absorption kinetics of both these components was investigated experimentally. In addition to demineralized water, various salt solutions of different concentrations as well as sodium hydroxide solution were used as absorbents. The term H \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ H\sqrt {k_1 D} $\end{document} for N2O4 and N2O3, which is important for the design of industrial absorbers, was determined as a function of composition and concentration of the absorbents. In the case of N2O4, the chosen measuring and evaluation methods permitted a separate determination of the rate constant k of the pseudo first order reaction and of the solubility H. The diffusion coefficient D of the gas in the absorbent can be obtained only by calculation. Experimental results showed that \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$(H\sqrt {k_1 D} )\,_{{\rm N}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 4} } $\end{document} decreases with increasing ionic strength I, however, without a clear indication of any ion-specific effects. This decrease does not appear to be caused simply by a reduction in solubility (salting out effect), or in diffusion coefficient, but at least, to the same extent, through a decrease of the rate constant k with increasing electrolyte content in the absorbent. The measurements permitted the determination of the gas-based salting out parameter for N2O4. The investigations on the absorption of N2O3 in water and in an Na2SO4 solution showed no experimentally detectable influence of dissolved salts on \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$(H\sqrt {k_1 D} )\,_{{\rm N}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 3} } $\end{document}. The numerical value of \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$(H\sqrt {k_1 D} )\,_{{\rm N}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 3} } $\end{document} is six times that of \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$(H\sqrt {k_1 D} )\,_{{\rm N}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 4} } $\end{document}.

Notes: The present contribution reports on a new method for the simulation of the dispersed phase behaviour in liquid-liquid extraction columns. The fluid dynamic description is based on a mathematical model which explicitly takes into account drop transport, break-up and coalescence mechanisms, via a drop population balance along the column. Application of the model requires some simple measurements on single drops in order to determine transport and break-up laws, which are required by the model, and possibly also coalescence parameters. In this study the model is applied to pulsed sieve plate columns. The specific example considered here is based on systematic studies on the determination of break-up rates from the corresponding probabilities of break-up and the generated daughter drop size distributions by means of high-speed photography. The validity of the model was subsequently tested by comparison with some experimental results from studies on two different pulsed columns 80 and 225 mm in diameter for the water/toluene system without mass transfer. The satisfactory agreement between the results justifies the use of such a method for the description of the behaviour of liquid-liquid extraction columns in a wide range of operating conditions. Furthermore, application of the model may help to dispense with long and expensive pilot tests.

Notes: Based on a paper by Hein, a dimensioning program for tube-bundle heat exchangers with straight tubes and fixed tube sheets has been developed. The equipment to be dimensioned is tested at 14 critical points, with regard to permissible stresses. The optimum thickness of the tube sheet, the shell and channel are subsequently selected on the basis of economic criteria. Compared to dimensioning according to AD-data sheet, it is possible to save between 10 and 25% of production costs. With the aid of a finite-element (FE) program, complex structures such as heat exchangers can be calculated accurately. Several mesh-generation programs were written for the data input. The structure of a tube-bundle heat exchanger with straight tubes is generated with 3/D elements with only some geometrical data. An FE-calculation of a heat exchanger is explained with the aid of an example and stress analysis is presented.

Notes: Pyrolysis of propane/argon mixture in the presence of trace quantities (0.1% and 0.9%) of ethane was investigated at reflected shock wave temperatures between 1200 and 2000K. Traces of ethane accelerated propane decomposition at high temperature. However, increase in the quantity of ethane added to propane/argon mixture did not result in the same increase of its accelerating influence. Ethylene, methane and acetylene were the main hydrocarbon reaction products, with small quantities of propylene and ethane detected only at lower temperatures. Below 1500K, addition of ethane slightly enhanced the yields of ethylene and methane at the expense of propylene and ethane respectively. The selectivity for acetylene increased with increasing temperature and with the decline of those for the other products. For none of the products, did the presence of ethane alter the relationship between product formation rates and temperature. The influence of ethane addition on propane pyrolysis at high temperatures was explained in terms of increased radical concentrations, especially hydrogen atoms and vinyl radicals, formed at high conversions. These accounted for the rapid acceleration of propane decomposition and the high yield of acetylene at high temperatures.

Notes: It is shown that the volumetric mass transfer coefficients, presented recently by Schmitz et al. [1] for viscous solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in aqueous sodium sulphite, are considerably underestimated as a result of unjustified neglect of the oxygen back pressure during oxygen absorption. Schmitz et. al. [1] found a decrease in the exponent n in the relationship between the oxygen mass transfer coefficient, kla, and the power dissipated per unit volume of the liquid phase, e (kla ∝ en), and ascribed it to viscosity effects. However, no such decrease is observed, provided that the actual oxygen back pressure is taken into account.

Notes: The aim of the present paper is the discussion of the relevance of power dissipation as a criterion for the understanding and prediction of transfer and mixing efficiencies in contactors and chemical reactors. After reviewing the approach of Le Goff to the energetic efficiency of exchangers, based on the deviations from Chilton-Colburn analogy, the following processes are studied: mass transfer between a flowing fluid and a reactive solid surface, transfer to a fixed object in a stirred vessel, macro- and micromixing of miscible fluids, and mass transfer in fluid-fluid contractors (especially gas-liquid reactors). It is concluded from the various examples that a direct relationship between the dissipated power and intensity of transfer or mixing can be established only under the two following conditions: local values must be considered at the point where the actual transfer and mixing occur, and not average values over the whole device, and power dissipation must be coupled to transfer or mixing and appear physically as the driving force of the process.

Notes: A mathematical model of the dynamic behaviour of non-isothermal fixed-bed adsorbers has been developed which takes into account the various mass and heat transfer resistances. Comparison of experimental and simulated results confirms that the model can predict the adsorption and desorption breakthrough curves of an adiabatically operated column, using only equilibrium data and tortuosity factors obtained from single pellet experiments. A simplified model with a reduced number of parameters was derived by investigation of the dimensionless transfer parameters under industrial conditions. It becomes evident that the main transfer mechanisms are convective heat and mass transfer in the bulk flow and diffusion within the pores of the particle. Dimensionless effluent concentration is expresses in terms of dimensionless time, a transport parameter, a non-isothermal parameter, the adsorption equilibrium and the inlet and initial concentrations and temperatures in the simplified model. For a chosen system of adsorbate and adsorbent, design charts can be developed by computer simulation, to determine graphically the breakthrough time as a function of significant process parameters, i.e. the dimensionless transfer parameter and the feed concentration.

Notes: A bench scale flue gas desulphurization spray dry scrubbing unit was employed to study the effect of fly ash on the removal of SO2. The equipment consisted of a spray dryer with and ultrasonic nozzle for atomization and a pulse jet baghouse. The flue gas rate was 1500 lN/h (dry gas). Four fly ashes, originating from different countries were investigated. The alkalinity and reactivity of the fly ashes were determined in a pH-stat equipment. Pure fly ash removed SO2 in both the spray dryer and in the baghouse. An increase of humidity divided the fly ashes into two groups. The high calcium fly ash gave a considerably higher SO2 removal than the medium and low calcium fly ashes which showed similar SO2 removals. Fly ash did not enhance the removal of SO2 when added to a lime slurry because lime suppresses the dissolution of the alkali in the fly ashes. The pressure drop build-up in the fabric filter showed a strong dependence on material properties.

Notes: Liquid-liquid direct-contact heat transfer in a spray column was studied numerically for a low hold-up. The solutions of the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy for both phases agree well with earlier experimental results, if one assumes a rigid liquid-liquid interface. Heat transfer inside is dominated by transient conduction and natural convection. It was found that the Nusselt number for free convection depends essentially only on the Rayleigh number.

Notes: The detailed dynamic simulation of coupled process units in chemical plants is gaining an increasing importance as a useful tool in plant engineering and operation. The outline of the program package DIVA (Dynamische Simulation verfahrenstechnischer Anlagen) which is currently under development is presented in the following. The dynamic plant equations and the corresponding Jacobian matrix are generated automatically. The full exploitation of sparse matrix techniques in combination with stiff ODE (ordinary differential equation) solvers allows an efficient solution of all the equations simultaneously. The possibilities offered by the simulator are demonstrated by the simulation of two laboratory plants.

Notes: Slurry bubble columns are widely used in biotechnology. Therefore, the effects of solid particles on fluidization characteristics, gas hold-up and volumetric liquid-side mass transfer coefficient were measured in a slurry bubble column (i.d. 0.14 m). The density and diameter of the suspended particles were similar to those applied in biotechnology with immobilized bacteria. Based on models of turbulence and of liquid circulation induced by rising gas bubbles, equations for critical gas velocity, gas hold-up and volumetric liquid-side mass transfer coefficient were obtained by dimensional analysis.

Notes: Spatially resolved oxygen concentration measurements were performed in premixed hydrocarbon flames by using laser induced spontaneous Raman scattering. The measurements demonstrate the performance of a relatively simple pulsed laser Raman probe for fundamental combustion studies and also for the control of the equivalence ratio in flames (best spatial resolution: 0.2 mm3; theoretical detection limit: 0.8% of O2). Comparison of the results with those obtained by a mechanical suction probe (Magnos 2 T) confirmed a good agreement. At present, control of different stoichiometric conditions is possible at a minimum O2 concentration of 1.3%.

Notes: Microbial desulphurization of coal by pyrite oxidizing enrichment cultures containing predominantly Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was performed in an air-agitated slurry reactor, 20 l in volume. A model of microbiological and chemical reactions, occurring at various points within the coal, was set up taking into account the pore structure of the coal. The influence of parameters relevant to industrial processes, such as superficial gas velocity, particle size, initial pyrite concentration, and slurry density of the coal, on the conversion of pyrite was examined. Variation of the superficial gas velocity in the range of 0.01 to 0.04 m/s confirmed that the reaction is not controlled by oxygen transfer from gaseous to liquid phase. The rate of pyrite oxidation depends mainly on the accessibility of pyrite to micro-organisms which is determined by the particle size of the coal as well as the distribution of pyrite crystals in the coal matrix. The accessibility of pyrite to the micro-organisms is described by the ratio of effective to maximum microbial activity, measured as oxygen consumption. Starting with higher initial concentration of pyrite in the coal increases the oxidation rate, according to first order kinetics. Enhanced slurry densities lead to a decrease of pyrite conversion, in spite of higher pyrite concentration. The maximum pyrite oxidation rate was measured at 15% (v/v) slurry density and 25°C as 1800 mg Spyr/kg coal per day, or 360 mg Spyr/l reactor volume per day.

Notes: Thermal radiation of gas/solid mixtures in high-temperature heat exchangers is of considerable importance for the design of heat exchange surfaces. Therefore, an experimental plant was constructed to measure solid particle emissivities, since there is a lack of relevant data in the existing literature. A theoretical equation was derived to describe the solid particle emissivity as a function of layer thickness, specific solid surface area, solid loading and absorption and scatter coefficients. Measurements were carried out for fluidized bed ash and quartz sand. The emissivities of these particle fractions increase with increasing layer thickness, slid loading, specific solid surface area and temperature. The description of these data by the derived model equation is very satisfactory. No dependence on wavelength was observed. The ash components do exert some influence which, for the present, cannot be described exactly.

Notes: The alternative effects of reaction kinetics, mass, heat and momentum transport on mass conversion by chemical reactions are examined theoretically for a reacot tube with laminar flow. The reaction enthalpy is considered. A heterogeneous reaction between several gaseous components takes place at the inner surface of this reactor tube. Strongly exothermic reactions lead to self-acceleration of the reaction, unless reaction enthalpy is removed through the tube wall. Under certain conditions, there will be a sudden change from mass transfer controlled by the reaction to that controlled by diffusion. This phenomenon is known as ignition of the reaction. The effect of ignition and its sensitivity to reaction enthalpy, thermal conductivity and diffusivity of the fluid as well as activation energy of the first order heterogeneous wall reaction are investigated by a numerical solution of the transport equations. Axial conduction of heat and mass is neglected both in the fluid and in the tube wall. Non-stoichiometric wall reactions of first order, with temperature dependent reaction rates and equilibrium constants, are considered. The results are presented in graphical form, as plots of the local mass flux at the reacting wall as functions of the dimensionless tube length.

Notes: The deterioration of mass transfer efficiency of an extraction column with increasing column diameter is the result of developing residence time distributions. These effects can be described by one-dimensional dispersion model. However, it must be verified whether the requirements for its application are fulfilled in the different types of agitated extraction columns. For the columns for which the dispersion model can be applied, a relationship will be derived between the necessary increase of column height with column diameter. This is based on the equations for calculation of the dispersion coefficient of the continuous phase. If the dispersion model cannot be applied to given a type of column, an investigation will be made on the possible modifications of operation or changes in construction, in order to permit a scale-up procedures as proposed here.

Notes: Precipitation is a rapid solidification. As a rule, it applies to substances which are sparingly soluble and is coupled with a chemical reaction or with a salting out process. The chemical engineer has to ensure that the product obtained has a constant and preferably coarse size distribution. This contribution compares the literature data on crystallization of soluble and sparingly soluble substances; it can be shown that, during precipitation processes, nuclei are formed, most probably by a primary mechanism. Analysis of the processes occurring during precipitation, such as chemical reaction, mixing and crystallization, leads to recommendations for the operation of precipitation processes.

Notes: A special type of jet loop reactor (JLR), designed for continuous operation and short residence times was investigated with regard to its mass transfer behaviour, described by the volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLa. The jet stream and superficial gas velocities are varied in two JLRs of different sizes, equipped with different nozzles. Fully desalinated water, 0.08 molar NaCI solution and solutions of different concentration of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are used as the liquid phase. A steady-state physical method is employed to determine kLa: air oxygen is purged from the liquid phase by gaseous nitrogen. The measurements show that the reactor is characterized by high power density and high mass transfer performance. No limit of mass transfer capacity was observed in the chosen ranges of volumetric gas and liquid flow rates, i.e. at a given jet stream velocity, the relationship between kLa and the superficial gas velocity is nearly linear. The investigations show that the mass transfer contributed by the jet stream largely depends on liquid phase composition.

Notes: This contribution presents the methods of measuring the mass transfer in centrifugal extractors and of determining it during the individual life stages of a fluid element of the dispersed liquid, i.e. drop formation, motion, coalescence and stay in the stationary layer of the dispersed phase. The experimental mass transfer coefficients of the dispersed and continuous phases are compared with well-known theoretical models developed for extraction columns in gravitational field. Due to the fast motion and coalescence of the fluid particles at high centrifugal field intensities, mass transfer in centrifugal extractors takes place during short contact times. Nevertheless, this contribution shows that mass transfer in a centrifugal field can be calculated with selected theoretical models of the gravitational field. The investigations on mass transfer are completed by a classification of the strongly deformed fluid particles in centrifugal field into regimes of circulating and oscillating drops. In addition, data on the performance of centrifugal extractors, undergoing several exchange steps, are given.

Notes: Detailed knowledge of the physical phenomena involved in subcooled boiling is of great importance for the design of liquid-cooled heat generating systems with high heat fluxes. Experimental heat transfer data were obtained for forced convective boiling of dichloro-difluoroethane (R 12). The flow is circulated upwards through a concentric annular vertical channel. The inner and outer diameters of the annulus are 0.016 m and 0.03 m respectively. The reduced pressures studied were 0.24 ≤ p/pcrit ≤ 0.8, inlet subcooling varied from 10 to 75 K and mass fluxes from 500 to 3000 kg/m2s, which corresponds to Re numbers from 30000 to 300000. The experiments, described in this study, demonstrate that liquid fluorocarbons show certain unusual boiling characteristics in the subcooled flow, such as hysteresis of the boiling curve. These characteristics are attributed to the properties of the fluid, mainly the Pr number and the very low surface tension. The pronounced boiling curve hysteresis can be explained by the fact that large nucleation sites may have been flooded prior to incipient boiling. A dimensionless regression formula is presented which predicts the onset of subcooled boiling as a function of reduced pressure (p/pcrit), Boiling-(Bo), Reynolds-(Re), and a modified Jacob number (Ja), over the whole range of parameters studied, with a good accuracy, including water data from literature.

Notes: A model is presented which consists of steady-state and transient codes for the description of reacting multiphase flow fields, including hydrodynamic fragmentation of liquid drops in relative flows. An application of this model for the description of large scale melt-coolant interactions (thermal detonations) is described. A simulation of two-phase chemical detonations, especially those with hydrodynamic disintegration of liquid fuel drops in the reaction zone, is possible, in principle, within the framework of the modeling.

Notes: In order to investigate the suspension behaviour of solid particles in bubble columns without and with draft tube, minimum gas velocities for generating and maintaining complete solid suspension were determined. Experiments were carried out in a bubble column with a diameter of 200 mm and a height of 2 500 mm. The bubble column could be equipped with a draft tube with a diameter of 120 mm and a length of 1 500 mm. The state of suspension was determined by measuring the hydrostatic pressure as a result of suspended solid particles with an inductive pressure gauge. Solid content εs, solid density ϱs, particle size dp, particle shape, particle size distribution, and solid wettability were varied. Furthermore measurements of integral gas holdup were carried out.

Notes: The adsorption solvent recovery process, known as Recursorb which involves desorption and cooling steps by a circulated inert gas, is analyzed in detail on the basis of equilibrium theory. Employing the method of characteristics, the model is solved for each step of the overall process. The estimations confirm that the process performance with respect to final gas purity, activated carbon useful capacity and operation times depends on condenser and heater temperatures. Simple expressions are derived for the calculation of adsorption, desorption and cooling times.

Notes: Adsorptive separation of oxygen from nitrogen and argon is carried out during the desorption steps of a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process which uses carbon molecular sieves developed by Bergbau-Forschung GmbH. The adsorption isotherms of the three main components of air are very similar. On account of the pore size distribution of CMSN2, the diffusion coefficient of oxygen is more than eight times those of nitrogen and argon so that air separation occurs by adsorption kinetics. Experimental results for the individual steps and cyclic operation of the PSA process are presented and compared with the predictions of an isothermal plug-flow model. Adsorption rate is represented by a linear driving force equation. If the diffusion coefficients are adapted separately to every step, a good agreement is observed between the model calculations and experimental results.

Notes: One of the most important tasks to eliminate dangers in chemical plants is the prevention of corrosion. This implies the provision of safe enclosures and reaction spaces for the substances to be processed. The present contribution deals with the procedure in the selection of materials for equipment exposed to corrosion and stresses the difficulties connected with the elimination of local corrosion. The relevance of prevention of crack forming corrosion processes is emphasized. Problems to be solved in order to obtain results from investigations, suitable for a safe application of a materials under practical conditions, are indicated.

Notes: Wall shear rate vectors in a bubble column and an airlift-loop reactor were measured using the limiting-current electrodiffusion technique. In connection with a new circular three-segment probe, the magnitudes and directions of shear rates were determined. The results for the bubble column are in good agreement with hot film-anemometry measurements in the same column. Moreover, the spiral flow structure, postulated in the shear-zone model of Franz, has been confirmed. In addition, the measuring technique was used to determine the flow structure in an airlift-loop reactor employed for the cultivation of animal cells. The region above the gas distributor of this fermenter has been identified as critical for mechanical damage to the cells.

Notes: Fermentation under modified gravity could be of interest in application to (a) increasing productivity of growth and growth linked production with microorganisms at high cell densities and (b) increasing the productivity of highly viscous pseudoplastic polysaccharide fermentation. In both cases, higher oxygen transfer rates in centrifugal fields result in higher productivities since these fermentations are usually oxygen limited. A further aspect of fermentation under increased gravity is the reduction of foam since foam coalescence time decreases with acceleration number. On the other hand, under microgravity, shear reduction would allow growth and production even for very shear sensitive organisms. In order to carry out fermentations under modified gravity, a special type of fermenter-the centrifugal field bioreactor CFBR-has been developed at the Institute of Chemical Engineering (Head: Prof. Mersmann) of the Technical University of Munich. For the first time, exoprotein biosynthesis of lipase with S. carnosus has been carried out under sterile and controlled conditions in this novel bioreactor, in presence of increased mass forces.

Notes: An experimental technique and evaluation method is described for the determination of local heat transfer coefficients in tubes or other ducts. By means of a rotary mixing valve, cold and warm fluid flows are mixed in order to generate an arbitrarily shaped but periodically oscillating inlet temperature profile at the test tube. The propagation of the fundamental harmonic oscillation from the fluid to the outer surface of the tube wall is calculated analytically. Comparison of fluid and wall oscillations yields the heat transfer coefficient to be measured. The inaccurate measurement of fluid bulk temperature in the centre of the cross-section is compensated by an additional correction. Experiments were carried out with turbulent water flow through a copper tube. Measured heat transfer coefficients were compared to values calculated using Hausen's equation and good agreement was obtained.

Notes: Mean droplet diameter of the dispersed phase in pulsed plate extraction columns was measured for binary and ternary systems. A change in the droplet size in the presence of solute, dependent on such factors as the direction of mass transfer, droplet size in the binary system, radio of diffusion coefficients, viscosity of the continuous phase, interfacial tension and driving force for extraction was observed. Two new empirical correlations of mean droplet sizes in mass transfer conditions are proposed. These correlations have been successfully applied to other extraction columns.

Notes: During molecular distillation in a falling film apparatus, temperature and concentration of the more volatile components undergo a marked decrease in axial and radial directions, due to the distillation in vacuo. The gradients produce changes in the rate of surface evaporation and separation efficiency along the flow path. A theoretical study of this problem is presented for binary mixtures. The respective differential equations for heat and mass transfer in the liquid film are solved numerically. As the results demonstrate, the aspect ratio of an apparatus should be large when a high separation is required and small when a high distillation rate is more important.

Notes: Flow phenomena, local heat and mass transfer and pressure drop of corrugated passages in process equipment are examined. Based on a method for measuring local heat and mass transfer, developed in previous investigations, a procedure has been formulated for the determination of local heat and mass transfer in corrugated passages. Using the analogy between heat and mass transfer, this technique allows the determination of heat transfer distributions in any structures with high local resolution. The corresponding pressure drop is presented together with the local and integral heat and mass transfer of different structures. It is shown that differences in heat and mass transfer as well as in pressure drop are due to different flow phenomena which also characterize mixing behaviour.

Notes: Crystallizer design has to take into account the physical and chemical properties of the solution and solids as well as the geometry, type and operating conditions of the crystallizer. The most important property of a crystallizing system is its solubility. High solubility leads to low relative supersaturation and large mean crystal size, and vice versa. High solubility systems can be sensitive to abrasion and attrition. For low solubility systems, mixing is crucial.

Notes: This paper considers the dynamic performance of instruments in control systems. Errors connected with transient measurements are discussed. It is shown that it is not always proper to assign common statistical properties to these dynamic errors. Emphasis is placed on temperature sensors. Common industrial thermometers are described and factors affecting their response discussed. An a-priori dynamic performance prediction procedure is presented. This permits preinstallation estimation of response characteristics of sensors used in industrial processes. Sensors in service also require performance assessment since they can deteriorate with use. In-situ testing is useful for this purpose and a recently develolped procedure is described.

Notes: The principle of ultrasonic spectrometry is based on the measurement of the ultrasonic extinction caused by the presence of particles. From measurements at different frequencies and with the knowledge of the ultrasonic extinction cross section of the particles, a system of linear equations can be established and solved to obtain the particle size distribution and particle concentration. With an experimental apparatus covering the frequency range from 1.7 MHz to 81 MHz, particles ranging from 20 to 1000 μm in diameter may be analyzed. The measurements can be carried out with particle concentrations as high as 10% by volume.

Notes: The “nozzle scrubber” is a wet scrubber in which the scrubbing water is dispersed in dust laden gas stream by means of one or more pneumatic nozzle. This scrubber is distinguished by an excellent collection efficiency for submicron dust at an unusually low energy and water consumption. So far, the physical effects affecting the separation cannot be explained by a well-defined theory. Therefore, it is sensible to investigate the collection efficiency with regard to the mechanisms of inertial impaction, turbulent diffusion and coalescence induced by turbulence. The experimental equipment is of a very simple design. A light scattering device was used to measure the particle distributions. In addition, electron micrographs were analyzed to obtain information about the submicron particles. The influence of operating parameters on grade efficiency has been demonstrated by their systematic variation. The contribution of turbulent diffusion to the collection efficiency has been confirmed; nevertheless, grade efficiencies were also measured when inertial impaction prevailed.

Notes: This study describes the gas and liquid distributions in a column with structured packings. The column is 0.5 m in diameter. It is equipped with a total of 1289 detectors in the top and bottom cross-sections. These detectors provide a detailed picture of the gas and liquid flows through elements of only 25 × 25 mm2. The maldistribution in the gas bulk flow is negligible. Only the observed wall can contribute to malperformance. The gas flows in parallel to sheet orientation, thus introducing a radial transport. Together with the change in the orientation of subsequent packing elements, this results in good gas mixing. It was observed that the liquid wall flow rate decreases when the gas velocity exceeds 1.7 m/s. Up to the loading point, the maldistribution of the liquid is constant. Above this point, the equality of the distribution deteriorates rapidly, due to the occurrence of large-scale liquid segregation.

Notes: Holographic interferometry is used for the determination of surface deformation of items of equipment. The material failure which caused the surface deformation can then be identified. Because a double-pulsed laser is used to plot the hologram, non-vibration stabilized holographic equipment is necessary. Thus, non-destructive testing of equipment components is also possible during plant operation. In this report, we present the experimental results of non-destructive testing of composite materials. We examined centrifugally cast pipes and filament wound pipes, which were made from glass fibre reinforced plastic and carbon fibre reinforced graphite. As a rule, the severity of failure is characterized by the apparent perturbation of its holographically stored fringe pattern. In this report, we present the experimental results which yield the relationship between the perturbation of interference fringes and the extent of the specific types of failure. Measurement results were compared with displacements calculated by the finite element method. By using the interferogram, and with the knowledge of tension stress beneath the surface, the size of the crack can be estimated. The size of the smallest detectable flaw was clearly smaller than the critical flaw size. Thus, holographic interferometry is suitable for detecting damage to cylindrical containers.

Notes: This contribution reports on the breakthrough behaviour of binary gas mixtures with ideal and non-ideal multicomponent adsorption equilibria. Investigations were carried out on mixtures CO2/C2H4 and C2H4/C2H6, both adsorbed on molecular sieve 5A (ms5A). The adsorption equilibrium of the system CO2/C2H4/ms5A may exhibit azeotropic behaviour, which subsides with decreasing active pressure (= sum of partial pressures of adsorbable components) or on raising the temperature. In contrast, the system C2H4/C2H6/ms5A maintains its ideal behaviour also at higher active pressures or lower temperatures. Attempts to calculate the non-ideal adsorption equilibrium from measured single component isotherms have failed when known models were applied. The investigation of the effect of azeotropic equilibrium on the fixed bed adsorption led to intersecting breakthrough curves of the two components. This behaviour is due to a displacement of equilibrium caused by the change in the active pressure and partial pressures, and a superposed temperature effect. This can be shown by calculating the breakthrough curves with the equilibrium model.

Notes: Even though the influence of solids concentration in the feed on the separation efficiency of hydrocyclones has long been recognized, a systematic research on the change in pressure drop across the hydrocyclone and the latter's separation characteristics has thus far been lacking. If all other operating parameters are kept constant, an increase in feed concentration generally leads to a coarser cut size, reduced sharpness of separation and a rise in pressure drop. Apart from the particles hindering one another's radial motion, the limited capacity of the apex valve and the changes in the flow field within the hydrocyclone cause additional particles to be entrained by the overflow. The flow ratio thus becomes an additional parameter in determining the cyclone efficiency. A theoretical model, which takes these effects into account, has been developed and successfully tested against experimental data.

Notes: In the first part of this paper, a mathematical model is presented for a liquid fluidized bed bioreactor using immobilized enzymes with reversible Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The model is based on the axial dispersion model for the bulk liquid phase. Inter- and intraparticle mass transfer as well as enzyme catalyzed reaction inside the porous beads are considered. The overall efficiency of the biocatalysts is calculated by a numerical routine. For the calculation of the concentration profile inside the reactor, a semi-analytical solution is derived which takes into account the height dependence of the effectiveness factor.

Notes: The residence time distribution in liquid phase was measured in a cocurrent upflow packed bed reactor for the system methanol-hydrogen at low Reynolds numbers and at elevated pressure. The plug flow with axial dispersion model was used to describe mixing in the system. The imperfect pulse method was used to measure the system response to a tracer pulse input. The parameters were calculated using the weighted moments method. The influence of the weighting factor was investigated. The experimental and theoretical outputs, as calculated by convolution, agreed very well. Different types of correlations were used for the Bodenstein number and liquid hold-up. From these correlations, the optimal one was selected for each parameter. A comparison was made between the ordinary moments and the weighted moments methods which led to the conclusion that the latter method is superior with respect to the accuracy of the estimated parameters and therefore strongly recommended.

Notes: Settling characteristics of four different suspensions were measured by batch settling tests (glass spheres in glycerol-water mixtures and CaCO3) and by continuous settling test in a bench-scale vertical flow tank (activated sludge and kaolin in water), including the measurement of solids concentrations inside the tank. The characteristics could be described by different correlation functions which now include all the information about the settling behaviour of ideal suspensions. Continuous settling experiments in a bench-scale vertical flow tank were carried out with the same four material systems. These results correspond with sufficient accuracy to those from the theory of limiting flux if the settling characteristics determined earlier are considered.

Notes: NOx emissions from different commercial gas burners for metal heat treatment applications were measured for a research project of the Gaswärme-Institut. The burners, rated at up to 50 kW, were installed for the tests in a laboratory combustion chamber operated at temperatures of up to 1400°C. The air for combustion was preheated to maximum temperature of 600°C. Following the tests, the potentials of different NOx control techniques were investigated. Methods explored included staged combustion air injection, staged fuel injection and fuel gas injection into the flue for NOx reduction. The results showed that it is feasible to reduce the NOx content of flue gases by as much as 90%.

Notes: Thermal deactivation can be described either by deactivation kinetics or by the isokinetic effect. The latter expression is used synonymously with the “compensation effect” and the “Theta-Rule”. An examination of the original literature shows that only the compensation effect is applicable to thermal deactivation but not the Theta-Rule. The introduction of the preparation temperature as a parameter of the compensation effect results in a “modified Theta-Rule”, which describes the experimental data and is proposed for the non-separable kinetics. The consequence of the observed deviations from the validity range of the Theta-Rule is that the activation energy cannot be used as a universal activity criterion.

Notes: The kinetics of non-catalytic as well as catalytic oxidation of Isobutyraldehyde has been investigated. Reaction rate equations for the formation of the main product isobutyric acid and of the side products acetone, CO and CO2 were derived. Kinetic parameters, namely the order of reaction, preexponential factor and activation energy were estimated by non-linear regression. The influence of selectivity and activity of the different type of catalysts employed was investigated quantitatively.

Notes: The aim of this investigation is to show the demarcation of two possible mechanisms for surface deposition of fine particles on the rear surface of single spheres. By means of single particle trajectory computation, based on numerically determined flow fields (Remax = 103), it is shown that the mere existence of a wake is not in itself sufficient to produce eddy deposition. In addition, the particle's motion must undergo a lateral transfer promoted by fluid trubulence, in order to effect eddy deposition commencing at a Reynolds number of about 100. On the other hand, rear deposition, influenced by electrostatic forces, especially by the Coulomb force, is possible at any Reynolds number. Consequently, for Reynolds numbers of less than 100, only electrostatic effects can produce rear surface deposition. In the range of high Reynolds numbers, the coexistence of both mechanisms is possible. Very high Reynolds numbers (Re 〉 103) and low Stokes numbers indicated the predominance of the electrostatic effect over eddy deposition, whereas at very high Reynolds numbers and medium to high Stokes numbers the electrostatic effect is only predominant in presence of high electrostatic charges.

Notes: The rate behaviour of multi-step reaction systems is difficult to model. Concentration-controlled investigations in a recycle reactor provide new tools for this purpose, e.g. the possibility to decompose a network into single reaction steps. Methanation of carbon monoxide over a supported Ni catalyst could be shown to be accompanied to a considerable extent by the shift reaction, and to a lesser extent by direct hydrogenation of carbon dioxide. Deactivation of the catalyst was measured at definite gas compositions. The two main steps show different responses to deactivation: Separable kinetics was found only for the methanation step. Power law rate equations were fitted to the rate data of the individual reaction steps to represent the main features of their kinetic behaviour. Some aspects of deactivation kinetics are also discussed.

Notes: This paper describes a pilot plant for entrainment measurements on various types of column trays. The data obtained from different trays differ by up to a factor of 10. The measurements were compared with the theoretical model of Stichlmair. The Stichlmair entrainment diagram permits a fairly accurate prediction for most types of trays if the height of the two-phase layer is known. Prediction of the height and relative liquid hold-up in this two-phase system should be modified by a term reflecting the vapour flow profile, which requires further testing. These tests should examine the effect of tray spacing, fractional free area and, in particular, the influence of different media.

Notes: Correlations for pressure drop and upper capacity limit (flooding) are useful for the design of packed columns. Available correlations are based on the results of measurements made at atmospheric pressure. Extrapolation to higher pressures is not recommended. Therefore, systematic experimental investigations were carried out in a pilot plant at pressures of up to 100 bar. The experimental equipment and techniques, evaluation methods, and some characteristic experimental results are presented.

Notes: Pool boiling data of multicomponent mixtures show that the heat transfer coefficients can be considerably lower than those of a corresponding pure fluid with the same physical properties as the mixture. The proposed model, which assumes maximum mass transfer resistance in the liquid boundary layer, is confirmed by the comparison between calculated and experimental data. The model allows the prediction of heat transfer coefficients in pool boiling of mixtures using only single component properties and vapour-liquid equilibrium data. Judging by experience with a number of different systems, the method should be sufficiently accurate for most practical applications.

Notes: Pressure pulsations in hydraulic systems, generated by reciprocating pumps, can cause serious problems with regard to plant safety and reliability. In particular, fatigue problems arise in high-pressure piping systems. The available knowledge is not sufficient for an accurate computation of pressure peaks in the piping of reciprocating pumps. A number of calculation models are available which, however, neglect both fluid compressibility and friction. This contribution presents a calculation method which allows a precise modelling of various pump installations. Comparison of calculated and experimental data shows a good agreement and provides a validation of the computational model.

Notes: Previous investigations have shown that the specific energy input is the overall parameter of influence on product size during communition in agitated ball mills, from laboratory up to industrial scale. The specific energy input is the introduced energy related to the amount of comminuted material. This parameter can be used for mill scale-up. Consequently, a method had to be found of introducing power into the mill so as to obtain a given specific energy input. For this purpose, stirring tests with purely Newtonian liquids were carried out in absence of solids and hence, without comminution. Mathematical models are presented which describe the power consumption in agitated ball mills in absence of grinding beads. In addition, tests with grinding beads filling were also performed, leading to scale-up guidelines with respect to power consumption. Finally, the influence of size and material of grinding beads was investigated.

Notes: Starting from the assumption that the growth of desublimed layers is governed mainly by heat and mass transfer, the authors present a model based on conditions in the diffusion boundary layer and suggest that the “hoarfrost”Hereafter the term frost will be used instead of hoarfrost. density depends on only one parameter. The discussion accounts for the process determining factors, i.e. the growth rate, mass transfer and gas concentration. The theoretical relationship is confirmed by the authors' own experiments on two systems and data from literature. The relationship can be established by a few laboratory experiments and permits the calculation of frost density and of associated variables, thus facilitating the optimization of desublimator design.

Notes: The interpretation of the term “compensation” obscures a logical contradiction, the catalytic paradox, which is caused by inconsistent validity ranges of the Arrhenius parameters, the pre-exponential factor and the activation energy. For this reason, a theory which contains the Arrhenius parameters cannot be established for the entire system (whole temperature range) on the basis of classical logic. Only the subsystems can be consistent and complete. One subsystem is the range of the topocatalytic concept which is relevant for thermal deactivation, thermal bistability and for all reactions with surface dependence of activity. The other is the range of the energetic concept which is preferred in fundamental research. In order to complete the subsystems, new consistent symbols are introduced. The change of particle size caused by thermal deactivation can result in four possible particle size effects, two of which have been discussed in the literature.

Notes: Film theory under consideration of one-sided diffusion is a satisfactory basis for the calculation of vapour condensation from a flowing turbulent mixture with non-condensable gases. At atmospheric pressure and low condensate flow rates, coefficient equations for smooth tubes are used as a rule. At higher pressures and thus, at higher temperatures and gas densities, there are additional parameters. For instance, non-ideal behaviour of the gas phase or the surface roughness affects the condensation process. These parameters were examined in a test plant under variation of pressure, steam concentration and temperature in a vapour/air mixture. At pressures of up to 21 bar, the Reynolds number of the gaseous phase reaches a maximum value of 128 000 and of 720 for the condensed phase. After description of the test facility, the experimental results are explained and discussed. It is shown that the experimental results are not in a good agreement with the common calculating methods. Taking into account the non-ideal behaviour of the steam/air mixture and the roughness of condensate surface by using a friction factor ξr, all the results could be calculated with an accuracy of ± 20%. This was achived with a modification of the coefficient equation of Gnielinski [1] and by using the equation of Andreussi [2] for the friction factor of a cocurrent annular flow. With respect to one-sided diffusion, the film theory is still applicable. The described method for the determination of local transfer coefficients includes the common calculating method. It represents an extension of the general validity of the film theory.

Notes: Mass transfer data are presented for absorption of oxygen in a centrifugal film apparatus. The apparatus was designed to exclude the formation of foam by gas dispersion in liquid. Cells and micro-organisms are not subjected to high shear stress. Therefore, this equipment can be applied in fermentation processes. In the present work, experimental data and correlations were obtained on splitting of the liquid film and oxygen absorption into the film through a spiral ridge formed on the conical surface. The performance of the apparatus is found to be equivalent to those of other types of absorbers.

Notes: Thermally stabilized combustion has a number of unique characteristics which permit the generation of steam or other forms of process energy from the heat of combustion of a gaseous or clean liquid fuel in remarkably compact, integrated apparatus while truly minimizing the concentrations of NOx, CO and unburnt fuel in the effluent. These characteristics, which have been identified by a long-range program of research, are described and the advantages and limitations of this process are discussed.

Notes: Crossflow microfiltration (CMF) is a pressure driven membrane process for the separation of suspended microparticles, bacteria and emulsion droplets. The fluid to be filtered flows in parallel to the membrane surface and restricts the formation of a filter cake. This contribution explains the basic process characteristics and the combination of the crossflow technique with other membrane cleaning methods (periodic backflushing, chemical cleaning). Special attention is paid to the influence of different process parameters on the flux through the membrane. The principle of plant design and different operation modes are described. Engineering aspects such as hydrodynamics, energy requirement and selection of construction materials are discussed in some detail.

Notes: While two- and multiphase flows find more and more application in chemical engineering practice, and the demand for theoretical information about mass and heat transfer processes in such systems is increasing, such data or at least experimental results which could be generalized are still lacking. The following pages are concerned with mass transfer in laminar suspension tube flows normal to the main direction of flow due to the individual motions of small, inert spherical particles. On the basis of a large number of experimental data, an interpretation is attempted of the role of nearly neutrally-buoyant particles in mass transfer enhancement, and a model for a semi-empirical description is suggested. The experimental arrangement uses the mass transfer of carbon dioxide in laminar flow of salt water during the process of gas permeation through a permeable membrane tube wall.

Notes: Fischer-Tropsch catalysts (Fe/V oxides with ZnO and K2CO3 as promoters) were exposed to CHCl3, thereby producing surface and bulk chlorides. The effect of this exposure on activity and selectivity was studied in a continuous recycle reactor at a total pressure of 10 bar (CO/H2 in most experiments: ca 1:1) in a temperature range between 200 and 343°C. CHCl3 was introduced in amounts of up to 1 × 10-2 mol chlorine per g catalyst. The catalyst samples were characterized by internal surface area, pore-size distribution and adsorption capacities for CO, H2 and C2H4. Prior to synthesis, the catalysts were reduced by H2. Catalyst exposure to CHCl3 resulted in a decrease of activity and considerable changes in product distribution. Hydrogenation and isomerization of 1-olefins were partly suppressed; the chain length of the products was slightly increased. Deactivation of the catalysts due to chlorine addition was partly reversible during operation, while olefin formation was not significantly altered with time-on-stream. The effect of chlorine on activity and selectivity is explained by dissociation of CO as the chain initiating step and CO insertion into a carbon/metal bond as a possible chain propagation step. Since adsorption capacity for H2 decreases on the addition of chlorine, this may also contribute to lower activity and change in selectivity, compared to the unexposed catalyst.

Notes: Correlation flowmeters have been used in the scientific field for many years and are actually gaining greater commercial importance due to an increasing number of applications in industrial plants. The importance of the correlation method is based on the fact that essentially no alternatives exist for measuring velocity and mass flow rate in pneumatic conveyors. However, the hitherto employed transit time correlation method leads to results which are clouded by uncertainties. The commonly used theoretical model of the measurement process does not explain these effects satisfactorily. Therefore, the theory of non-intrusive flow sensors is reinvestigated from a physical standpoint. The derived model permits a discussion of the transit time correlation method in some detail. Furthermore, this model leads to an alternative sensor arrangement and signal processing scheme which makes it possible to measure the true mean velocities. Examples of experimental results are given.

Notes: For the simulation of steady- and non-steady-state behaiour of separation columns, a simulation program was developed and employed for the calculation and optimization of methanol-water separation. The demand for increasingly higher purities and energy-saving optimization of plants results in complex column configurations and thus in complex control schemes. The number of possible control schemes was reduced on the basis of heuristic rules. By simulating the process, the optimum control and manipulative variables and measuring points were determined from the reduced number of control concepts. A control scheme was introduced. The model was verified by simulation of the dynamic behaviour of the process. The investigation included the effects of computing technique, time interval, model reduction and tray hold-up on the results. Thus, various effects and interactions were verified theoretically with respect to the robustness of the model. This was followed by a simulation of the non-ontrolled and controlled column. By implementing the controllers in the existing column program, the computer can predict the control parameters. These parameters were checked and corrected when the metahnol-ater column was put in operation. In the start-up phase, major problems were caused by the sensitivity and failure rate of density, throughput and pump measuring sensors. Feed impurities were another source of problems. Operation with high product purities is possible, with a side stream to discharge impurities.

Notes: This contribution presents the measurements of bubble behaviour in presence of A, B and D powders in a semi-industrial scale pressurized fluidized bed. Local measurements were taken at static pressures of 0.2, 1.0 and 2.5 MPa, using capacitance probes. Quartz sand with mean particle diameter of 157 μm was fluidized in small “two-dimensional” transparent equipment with Frigen R 115. Notes: For design and simulation of chemical process furnaces in accordance with present-day standards, the temperature distributions in the firebox and in the reactors must be generated simultaneously. This calls for coupling of the simulations of the firebox and of the reactor. For the calculation of heat transfer in the firebox, a generalized furnace simulations program, based on the zone method, is applied. Monte Carlo simulation techniques are used to determine the view factors. The location of the burners is explicitly accounted for. Absorption and emission of radiation by the flue gas are calculated by considering band contributions for carbon dioxide and water. For the simulation of the steam reforming reactors, a one-dimensional heterogeneous model, which accounts for the presence of intraparticle partial pressure gradients, is used. The simulated temperature distribution in the furnace is in excellent agreement with industrial results, as is the simulated product distribution.

Notes: The most important investigations on liquid weeping and entrainment in plate columns with downcomers are reveiwed. The formulae for calculating column plate efficiency under conditions of liquid weeping and entrainment have been derived on the basis of mass balance equations. The presented model is a generalization of the models of AIChE and Colburn. Sample results are shown graphically. The effect of liquid entrainment on tray efficiency predicted by the model is in agreement with experimental data of FRI.

Notes: The knowledge of the heat transfer coefficient on the inner side of a heated vessel wall is of the utmost importance for the design of agitated vessels. In the case of large Reynolds numbers, the heat transfer is mainly determined by these numbers whereas, with small Reynolds numbers, the heat transfer is better described by considering the Grashof number. Investigations of heat transfer in agitated narrow vessels have shown that the height/diameter ratio exerts virtually no influence on the heat transfer when multi-impeller stirrers are used. The heat transfer to stirred suspensions can be described by relationships valid for liquids if the characteristic data of the liquid are replaced by those of the suspension and when the solids volume concentration is also taken into account. This relationship allows the heat transfer coefficient to be calculated for given solids volume concentrations of up to 60%.

Notes: In order to achieve optimal energy-saving, load-dependent operation of rectification columns, development and implementation of model-based control concepts are necessary. This paper reports on the design and step-by-step testing of a state observer for the estimation of two state variables which cannot be measured directly, namely the vapour rate and the location of mass transfer zone (temperature front) in the stripping section of a production column. The procedure is described, and the relevant simulation and operation results are presented and discussed. Initial experience, gained when the concept was put into practical operation, is reported.

Notes: Continuous crystallization of potassium carbonate was investigated in a mixed suspension mixed product removal (MSMPR) crystallizer with 7.0 1 working volume. Highly polydispersed product was obtained, with x50 varying between 320 and 670 μm. Crystal growth rates can be described by the model of Abegg, Stevens and Larson (ASL) (size dependent crystal growth rate). Values of G0 = 8.6 × 10-9 to 3.6 × 10-8 m/s and B0/ϕ = 2.7 × 108 to 4.2 × 109 1/m3s were obtained for mT = 45 to 92 kg/m3 and ε = 0.45 ± 0.05 W/kg. Nucleation kinetics at 27 °C can be described by the equation: B0/ϕ = kBϕsε0.73G02.5. Since G0 ∝ σ, convection and/or diffusion rather than surface integration are the crystal growth controlling mechanisms.

Notes: When a chemical reactor is depressurized or pressure in a vessel, filled with saturated liquid, has to be decreased, generally both vapour and liquid flow out through the relief valve. Since chemical reactors are usually operated with toxic and explosive fluids, the discharged liquid which vaporizes on the ground around the vessel may reach dangerous concentrations, causing explosions or accidents with the poisonous gas. During a research project, some fundamentals were developed for the design of separation systems which separate liquid from vapour and store it in a receiver. The requirement for a separation efficiency of a least 80% is related to the condition that the separated liquid should flow back into the reactor still during the pressure relief phase. For safety reasons, both separation and re-storage are to be carried out without the supply of external energy. Theoretical and experimental investigations of pressure distribution within the piping to the relief valve and in an integrated separator show that re-storage of the separated liquid in the vessel can be achieved under certain flow conditions. Therefore, the separator must be integrated in the pipe at a certain height above the vessel, so that the hydrostatic pressure of the separated liquid, corresponding to the difference in height, is sufficient to lead it back through another pipe against the internal pressure of the vessel. First, several separators were tested with air-water mixtures. A swirl separator and a reversing separator have been developed to such an extent that they appear suitable for the set task. Experimental results with air-water mixtures and refrigerant R12 upon pressure relief show separation efficiencies of between 90 and 100% at low pressure drops within the whole operating range. As an alternative to separation outside the vessel, a rotary separator was also developed which is fixed to the outlet opening in the vessel. A centrifugal field is produced by the separator rotor and the heavier liquid is largely separated from the vapour so that only drops in the range 〈 100 μm flow together with the vapour towards the central standpipe. The outflowing vapour leaves the separator via 4 tangentially arranged nozzles, under critical conditions. The vapour flow momentum drives the separator rotor. The arrangement was developed and tested during various series of experiments, under conditions or pressure relief with refrigerant R12. So far, separation efficiencies between 60 and 95% have been achieved at stirring speeds of up to 2500 min-1.

Notes: Depressurization of a pressure vessel, containing a liquid or a gas is limited by the maximum possible mass flux. This flux occurs at a certain drop in pressure. The ratio of ambient pressure to that inside the vessel must be less than a certain critical value. The critical pressure ratio depends on the thermodynamic state of the fluid inside the vessel and on the geometry of the outlet cross-section. The outlet can be a pipeline, a safety valve or a rupture disk. The results of known theoretical and experimental work are presented. In previous experiments, saturated liquids, two-phase flows or pure vapours were examined. In order to predict the critical pressure ratio, certain assumptions are necessary. These are derived for three well-defined cross-sections of the vessel outlet.

Notes: During the past decade, the sintering of model supported metal catalysts, i.e. catalysts consisting of metal deposited on very thin and flat oxide films, has been intensively investigated by transmission electron microscopy. In the current paper, a mathematical model, based on an atomic migration mechanism, for the sintering of these catalysts is presented. The predictions of the model, based on Monte Carlo simulations, are in very good agreement with the experimental observations, i.e. phenomena such as ‘apparent’ particle migration, splitting and neck formation between particles are predicated by the model.

Notes: The presented contribution reports on comprehensive hydrodynamic investigations in two pulsed sieve-plate extraction columns (PSE) on a pilot scale. The experiments were conducted with three different sieve plate geometries employing test systems recommended by EFCE, under varying pulsation conditions and throughputs. The results of the investigation add to the existing knowledge of relationships between hydrodynamic parameters, drop size, hold-up, flooding throughput and mixing and operating parameters. They also provide useful information for scale up, selection of sieve-plate geometry, most favorable operating range, and constructive design of equipment. On the basis of measurements, analytical methods are recommended for prediction of PSE hydrodynamics.

Notes: Anaerobic fermentation of molasses distillery slops to biogas was carried out with the aid of an adapted and selected anaerobic mixed culture. Two different types of fermenters were used, namely an agitated pretreatment fermenter and a column fermenter with glass rings as carriers for micro-organisms. The production of biogas in both fermenters amounted to between 0.6 and 0.8 dm3/g COD. The aerobic pretreatment of distillery slops by T. fermentans, yeast during a 4 to 6 h period allows a high reduction of COD in the subsequent anaerobic phase of the process. After treatment of the distillery slops by T. fermentans, it was possible to convert between 85 and 93% of the organic matter to methane. Conversion was about 93% with loading rate of 25g COD/litre day.

Notes: The conversion of methanol over zeolite H-T was investigated in a fixed bed reactor. H-T was prepared from Na-T by ion exchange with HCl and NH4Cl solutions. The HCl solution caused appreciable dealumination. High yields of ethene were obtained with NH4Cl exchangeed zeolites Na-T with 45% decationization, high proprne yields with low HCl or NH4Cl Exchanged catalysts. Low methanol partial pressures and short residence times favoured the formation of lower olefins. Lowest coking rates were observed at a reaction temperature of 693 K. The catalytic activity decrased slowly with the number of reaction/regeneration cycles. The distribution of procucts 〉 C2 could be described by the most probable distribution of Schulz and Flory.

Notes: This paper presents a method mathematical modelling of cocurrent multitubular fixed-bed reactors. The method is adapted to the most widespread type of industrial reactor design, i.e. the system fitted with disk-and-doughnut baffles. The proposed model makes it possible to estimate the influence of non-uniformity of the heat carrier flow on the reactor characteristics, taking into account the coolant streams by-passing via the tube-to-baffle clearances. Based on the model, the effect of the operating parameters as well as of some more important geometrical parameters of the reactor on an exemplary highly exothermic process of partial benzene oxidation to maleic anhydride is discussed.

Notes: Collection efficiency and pressure loss of a venturi scrubber can usually be determined from the calculation models of Barth and Calvert. However, this only leads to reasonable results if the droplets are uniformly distributed throughout each cross-section of the washing zone. In this work, a two-zone models is developed which allows the calculation of the venturi scrubber at operating conditions with a non-uniform droplet distribution. The scrubber geometry is also taken into account. A venturi scrubber was developed on the basis of this new model. Its energy consumption is significantly lower than the well-Known optimum characteristic of Wicke and Holzer. For ideal operating conditions, a new optimum characteristic is given which should be the aim of future optimizations.

Notes: A model of floc destruction resulting form mass forces in a centrifugal field is postulated and its validity examined. This model is to be regarded as a supplement to the existing shear-loading disagglomeration models. In order to verify this additional floc disintegration mechanism, appropriate investigations were carried out with flocculated suspensions of silica and Hamburg dock sludge. As a result, in addition to floc disintegration by shear forces within a turbulent flow and in the centrifuge inlet, the existence of another mechanism was demonstrated. This consists in the floc destruction in a centrifugal field where particles in excess of a certain size, or specifically heavier components, are preferentially torn out of the floc. This floc disintegration by mass forces can lead to a classification effect in centrifuges which also subject the flocs to instant high centrifugal forces.

Notes: A circular loop reactor was built for application to a heterogeneous liquid-liquid reaction. In order to investigate the dispersion behaviour of droplets in the reactor, basic experiments were performed using a number of liquid-liquid dispersions. Droplets discharged form the impeller region were found to grow due to coalescence in the circulation region. Mean droplet diameter decreased exponentially with elapsing time. An expression correlating the steady-state mean droplet diameter with the operating conditions was derived. Moreover, the transition time required for the droplet diameter to reach the equilibrium value was determined and correlated with the operating conditions.

Notes: Important aspects of K1a measurement in agitated aerated vessels are briefly characterized from the standpoint of reliability of the measured data. An analysis of the shortcomings of dynamic methods for measuring the K1a is given. A new modification of the dynamic method is proposed, which excludes these inadequacies through a special experimental arrangement. This was verified by comparing the data with those obtained by an independent steady-state method. The new method can serve as a standard of reference, suitable for testing newly developed methods for K1a measurement. The initial response method was tested in this way in non-coalescent liquids, and shown to lead to errors of the order of hundreds of percent. K1a values obtained with the initial response method were found to depend strongly on the probe's location in the vessel.

Notes: Secondary nucleation in industrial crystallizers depends on both supersaturation and mechanical stress by stirring. Most models which consider mechanical stress assume that nucleation is proprotional to the energy transferred to the crystals during collisions. This is not based on any physical relationship and, in addition, the models do not satisfactorily reproduce the experimental results. Own model, based on the theory of Hertz/Huber, which accounts for the stress of the crystals caused by impact, gave better results. This well-known and proven theory allows the calculation of the volume abraded during collisions between crystals and stirrer or walls. Introducing a nucleate efficienncy, the effect of mechanical stress on the rate of secondary nucleation, due to stirring intensity and crystallizer size, can be determined.

Notes: The sintering effect of highly dispersed metals is the reason for the following phenomena: thermal deactivation, particle size effect, separable or non-separable kinetics and the isokinetic relationship ( = compensation effect). A comparison of these phenomena reveals a contradiction which can be reconciled by a new particle size effect. This effect is characterized in the following way: The dependence of specific activity on particle size is always connected with a variation of the activation energy, caused by the particle size distribution. Therefore, this effect is referred to as the partical size and distribution effect, P.S.D.E. This new concept describes all the observed phenomena of the conventional partical size effect. Moreover, it is consistent with similar effects such as non-separable kinetics and the isokinetic relationship. In consequence, the method of isothermal measurement of specific activity is inadequate.

Notes: Many experimental studies reveal that suspended solids considerably alter the coalescence behaviour and hydrodynamic functions of wo-phase flow. But no systematic efforts have yet been undertaken to separate the effects of different particle properties on local gas hold-up, bubble size and interfacial area gas/liquid. The aim of this paper is to present the local values of these parameters in three-phase fluidized beds of different solids, using miniaturized optical fiber and conductivity needle probes. It is shown that particle concentration, size and, in particular, density are decisive for the change in coalescence behaviour. Ranges of normal (ϱS 〉 ϱL) and inverse fluidization (ϱS 〈 ϱL) must be distinguished and the flow regime also exerts a strong influence on the interactions between the dispersed phases, the transition point itself being a function of particle properties can be observed, This effect is evaluated for different column diameters, between 0.1 and 0.3 m.

Notes: Warm concentrated industrial wastewaters are preferably treated in an anaerobic reactor for reasons of energy generation and low surplus sludge production. Problems to be solved in the practical application concern a low growth rate of the micro-organisms, their low settling rate, process instability and the need for after treatment of the noxious anaerobic effluent which often contains NH4+ and HS-. The use of biomass immobilized on small suspended carriers (〈 0.5 mm) has proven to be a suitable means to overcome most of these problems. Results are presented on pilot and full-scale pretreatment of industrial wastewater in an anaerobic 2-state fluidized bed reactor for CH4-production and laboratory and pilot scale post-treatment of the anaerobic effluent, which contains NH4+ and HS- in an aerobic air-lift suspension reactor for the production of NO3- and SO42-.

Notes: Experimental investigations of thermal bulk polymerization of styrene in pilot plants of different sizes have been performed. Each pilot plant is composed of a tubular recycle reactor, connected in series with a tubular reactor, both completely filled with Sulzer motionless mixers. Kinetic, reactor and viscosity models have been verified in a wide range of styrene conversions (up to 96%) temperatures (up to 210 °C) and polystyrene molar masses (up to 360 000). Scale-up studies were carried out which confirmed that multitubular reactors of special design can be applied for industrial polymerization process.

Notes: Aerated emulsions are gaining significance in fermentation as well as in inorganic and organic chemistry. In these processes, liquid-liquid mass transfer can be the limiting step. Therefore, the effect of gassing rate on droplet size was investigated as a function of dispersed liquid phase concentration and power input in different vessels. At high power inputs, the droplet size decreased. With increasing dispersed phase concentration and gassing rate, the droplet size increased and its dependence on power input subsided.

Notes: The production of dioxins/furans during waste incineration, and particularly the development of measures for minimizing the amount of generated pollutants, continue to command a considerable scientific as well public interest. Experiments are reported which were performed at the TAMARA municipal solid waste pilot incineration, erected on the premises of the karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre.
