Sir
I agree with much of what Richard Buttery says in his letter (Nature 424, 995; 200310.1038/424995a) about the Joint European Torus (JET), but I must point out that he has quoted my statement (Nature 424, 4; 200310.1038/424004a) out of context. I was asked by Nature to comment on the situation that might occur if there were no substantial increase in the fusion budget in the Seventh Euratom Framework Programme. I mentioned the possible closure of JET in the context of there being insufficient money to finance the European contribution to ITER.
