Prevention of Hypercholesterolaemia in Thyroidectomized Rats by Growth Hormone

Abstract

THE importance of the thyroid gland in the metabolism of cholesterol is illustrated by our finding1–3 that the rate of conversion of cholesterol into bile acids is decreased in the absence of circulating thyroid hormone and its rate of synthesis in the liver is diminished. Conversely, an excess of thyroid hormone leads to increased conversion of cholesterol into cholate, enhanced hepatic synthesis, and less cholesterol in the plasma.
