Abstract
The evaluation of particle size in colloidal suspensions is of considerable academic and commercial interest. The greatest uncertainty lies in the measurement of particles of sub-micron dimensions. We report here a novel method for particle sizing in this range which is rapid, ideally suited to rigid particles and can be adapted to commercial situations. It is based on the induction and measurement of birefringence in a colloidal medium on its subjection to short pulses of high frequency ultrasonic power.
