Stimulation by Insulin of in vitro Fat Synthesis by Mammary Tissue studied with Carbon-14 and Tritium

Abstract

RESPIRATORY observations have been interpreted1 as indicating that lactating mammary gland slices are able to utilize acetate for net fatty-acid synthesis in vitro, either as sole substrate (ruminants: sheep, goat, cow) or in the presence of glucose (non-ruminants: rat, rabbit). Tissue respiration measurements have, moreover, led to the further conclusion2–4 that insulin, added in vitro, causes a marked stimulation of fat synthesis by lactating mammary gland slices from rat, rabbit and mouse.
