Abstract
IT is well known that calcium is an important link in electromechanical coupling; however, there is little information about the underlying mechanism. Our knowledge about the action of calcium on the contracture of heart and skeletal muscles has been extended by a series of important observations1–7. Our experiments on electromechanical coupling have led us to investigate the action of calcium on tonic and twitch muscle fibres and to examine the problem whether the property ‘slow’ or ‘fast’ of a muscle fibre is influenced or caused by calcium.
