Abstract

  • 1.

    1. Oxygen consumption by Sphaerium simile was determined as a function of temperature and oxygen tension in both whole organism and excised gill and mantle tissue.

  • 2.

    2. The whole organism appears to have a homeostatic mechanism that resists environmental fluctuations, within limits; excised tissue exhibits no regulation of oxygen consumption.
