Methodologically diverse studies have shown that consuming wheat bran may reduce the risk of various cancers, especially colon, breast and prostate cancer (Adlercreutz, 1990; Arts, Govers, Van den Berg, Blankenstein, & Thijssen, 1992; Arts & Thijssen, 1992; Carter, Madl, Lubahn, Besch-Williford, & MacDonald, 2006; Weisburger et al., 1993). Most of the proposed therapeutic effects are limited to the physiological function of the bran fibre (Arts & Thijssen, 1992; Arts et al., 1992; Drankhan et al., 2003; Lupton & Turner, 1999; Weisburger et al., 1993).

Another study showed that rats on a high plane of feeding had excreted more oestrogen in the faeces [2], and Schwarzenberger [32] postulates that factors such as compartmentalization, turnover rates, permeability and nutritional stress influence levels of faecal steroid metabolites in horses. Therefore, the potential seasonal effect of faecal progestagen and oestrogen metabolite excretion in wild zebra needs more attention, because out of the 52 samples from pregnant females, only 16 were from the dry season.
