Abstract

  • 1.

    1. The Chironomus thummi thummi hemoglobins have been isolated and separated into monomeric and dimeric Hbs by gel chromatography and into single components using disc electrophoresis.

  • 2.

    2. Essential properties of CTT Hbs were checked (molecular wt, u.v. and visible absorption spectra, component composition).

  • 3.

    3. Seasonal variability of Hb content and component composition was found. Concentration of total Hb in hemolymph was 2.7–3.0% and 4.5–4.9% in spring and summer generation respectively, dimeric to monomeric Hbs ratio was in these two generations 1.27–1.54 and 2.13–2.37.

  • 4.

    4. This variability was discussed in evolutional and physiological terms and interpreted as adaptations to variations in ecological conditions (particularly to oxygen tension and temperature).
