Solitons in 3He-B

There exist solitonic excitations in the order parameter description of 3He-B which are the analogues of skyrmions in chiral models. It is suggested in this paper that the topological or winding number of the solitons is the quasiparticle number. The ground state in the winding number one sector can be consistently interpreted as the quasiparticle itself with the correct angular momentum ½ after a suitable “Wess-Zumino” term is included in the effective action. The model also suggests an excitation of the quasiparticle with spin 0 and a state of two quasiparticles with spin 0. The latter is the analogue of dibaryons in the chiral model.
