Abstract

A hamiltonian formulation is provided for the bosonic closed string theory on genus-g Riemann surfaces. We define scattering amplitudes in the operator context by introducing suitable vertex operators. These turn out to be the natural extension of the g = 0 scattering amplitudes. As a first step for computing them we calculate correlation functions for the matter fields, and we reobtain the well-known results.
