Abstract

A quark-antiquark potential is introduced which is a relativistic modification of the Richardson potential in the re-elaboration given the Schöberl. It is found that the hyperfine splitting of the spectrum of q- $q$ can be reproduced both for light and heavy quarks in terms of a single scale parameter and the quark masses.

Retardation corrections to the quarkonium hyperfine separations

The lowest order retardation corrections to the hyperfine separations are evaluated for some charmonium and bottomonium states under the usual assumption of a purely scalar Bethe-Salpeter confinement kernel. The form of the kernel and the parameters involved are the same used in a previous paper devoted to the evaluation of the leading spin-independent retardation corrections. Only the 1S and 2S states are considered. The corrections turn out to be about −30 MeV for the 1S separation and a few MeV for the 2S one.
Testing relativistic corrections to the qq potential on the heavy quarkonium spectrum

A quark-antiquark potential obtained by an improvement of the Wilson loop method and including all first order relativistic corrections is tested on the c $c$ and b $b$ spectrum and compared with alternative proposals based on ad hoc assumptions on the Bethe-Salpeter kernel. The light quark pair creation effect is taken into account using results existing in the literature. The minimum χ² is found smaller for our potential than for the other considered potentials.

On a systematic derivation of the quark-antiquark potential

A systematic method of deriving the quark-antiquark potential is developed. The whole procedure is organized as a 1/c expansion. Up to order 1/c², the Eichten-Feinberg spin-dependent potential is recovered and new velocity-dependent terms are obtained. As essential step of the derivation is the identification of a Pauli-type two-particle propagator, which satisfies a suitable Schrödinger equation. The short- and large-distance behaviour of the potentials is studied.
