Abstract

The quadrupole interaction of 222Rn and 220Rn implanted by α-particle-decay in Al metal and Al-oxide has been investigated. The experimental results indicate an electrical interaction in cubic Al metal not in agreement with earlier measurements using isotope implanted sources.

When nuclei with long-lived excited states recoil into metals that have weak internal electric field gradients, angular correlations can remain unperturbed. Indeed, Orre et al. [7] found no perturbations for the 224Ra→220Rn case studied above when the recoils occurred in Al metal i.e. a2=5/7 and a4=−12/7 with w(0)=1. We can model the situation with strong electric field gradients to a first approximation by placing an idealized quadrupole, +q, −2q, +q at the origin and along the z axis of a Cartesian/spherical polar coordinate system, i.e. x=R sin θ cos ϕ, y=R sin θ sin ϕ, z=R cos θ.

It should be noted that without access to the original data points and their corresponding experimental errors it is not possible to determine the appropriate errors to assign to the w(M) here. Nevertheless the relatively small published errors [8] for the various G2 and G4 mean that the general observation, w(2)>w(1), noted in Table 1 will probably prove to be statistically significant. We now discuss the possible underlying physics explanation for this perhaps, surprising observation.
