Mixture and dissolution of laser polarized noble gases: Spectroscopic and imaging applications
2012, Progress in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance SpectroscopyCitation Excerpt :In this article we focus on different applications of hyperpolarized gases. Two methods are used to achieve optical pumping of nuclear spins of noble gases: Spin exchange optical pumping (SEOP) [8–10] and metastability exchange (MEOP) [11–13]. Both methods share the same basic principle in which angular momentum is transferred from laser photons to electron spins [14] and finally via magnetic coupling (hyperfine interaction) to nuclear spins [8,15], thereby temporarily enhancing the nuclear spin polarization in these systems by four to five orders of magnitude.
Optogalvanic spectroscopy using 389 nm coherent light source accurately tuned to resonance frequency of 23S->33P of 3He
2008, Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and AtomsCitation Excerpt :Images obtained using hyperpolarized gas is different from those obtained by MRI using protons of water in the body. There are two methods of producing hyperpolarized noble gas [8]: spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) and metastability exchange optical pumping (MEOP). In general, polarized gas is obtained by the spin-exchange collision reaction between spin-polarized alkali metals irradiated with circularly polarized light and noble gases.

2004, ChestCitation Excerpt :During the investigation, blood oxygenation and heart rate were monitored continuously by pulse oximetry. The technical prerequisites and production of hyperpolarized 3He gas used at our institution have already been reported elsewhere.232425 In brief, He gas was hyperpolarized by direct optical pumping of metastable 3He atoms and polarization transfer to ground-state 3He atoms by metastability exchange collisions.
