Abstract

Ionization pulse signals due to ²⁰⁷Bi conversion electrons were observed in ionization chambers filled with tetramethylsilane which was purified by a simple method. Pulse height spectra and its variation with the electric field were measured.

Free-ion yields, electron mobilities, and electron-ion recombination coefficients in liquid tetramethylsilane

Electron mobilities and electron-ion recombination coefficients have been determined at 253 K and 170 K by analysing transient electric current through a liquid tetramethylsilane sample. In a conductivity cell ionization was induced by X-ray pulse irradiation under a dc external electric field lower than 10.5 kV/cm. Also results on free-ion yield and electron mobility are discussed. Their dependence on temperature and electric field are investigated.
Characteristics of an ionization chamber using tetramethylgermanium

The material compatibility and the radiation resistivity of liquid tetramethylgermanium have been examined by monitoring the ionization yield and the electron lifetime in a pulse ionization chamber. There is no deterioration of the liquid quality with hardened lead during one year. Irradiation with 1000 Gy of γ-rays causes some deterioration of the liquid. The electron lifetime for the damage liquid was almost restored to its initial value by repeating the purification several times.
Search for new room temperature liquids for use in ionization chambers

Ionization currents and free ion yields have been measured as a function of applied electric field for ten room temperature liquids containing silicon, germanium, or tin atoms. The highest free ion yields measured are for those liquids having small spherical molecules; tetramethylsilane, tetramethylgermanium, and tetramethyltin. We have updated our earlier measurements for tetramethyltin with a much reduced systematic uncertainty obtained by calculating the contribution to the ionization current from the photoelectric absorption of low energy photons. Tetramethylgermanium and tetramethyltin both have free ion yields similar to tetramethylsilane, making them interesting candidates for use in ionization chambers.

The pulse height signals obtained from protons and K-conversion electrons of a ²⁰⁷Bi source in a single gap TMS ionization chamber were analyzed in the framework of the Onsager-Birks model as well as using the Jaffé formalism. The measured signals Q(t) were time dependent $∝(1 + t t_{12})^{−1}$ , but could be normalized to a common point of time. The electron drift lengths and kB-factors were determined by measurements at both electric field polarities and different incident energies: 8 ≤ E_p ≤ 23 MeV. For the different incident angles of the protons versus the field direction, an angle dependent kB-factor (in g cm⁻² MeV⁻¹) was obtained: kB(α) = [0.0122 ln(sin⁻¹α)+0.0112] for 5° ≤ α 40° and kB(0°) = 0.048. Different dispersion parameters for the distribution of thermalized electrons had to be used: b = 14.2 nm for protons and b = 21.1 nm for electrons, where the averaged energy to create a single ionization was W = 31 eV.
The Jaffé model yielded reasonable fits for the protons with a column radius $b_{Jaffé} = 9.5 nm$ and recombination coefficient κ = 6×10⁻⁵cm³/s and was able to reproduce the angle dependence of the signal height with the exception of α = 0°. For the ²⁰⁷Bi conversion electrons the Jaffé model failed.
Estimation of the electron lifetime in tetramethylsilane

The variation of the collected charge with electric field in a diode-type ionization chamber is used to estimate the electron lifetime in tetramethylsilane (TMS). The primary ionizing particles are the 976 keV conversion electrons emitted from a ²⁰⁷Bi source. In the best purity sample of TMS we obtained an electron lifetime of 11 ± 2 μs which corresponds to an attenuation length at 10 kV/cm, equal to 11 cm. The free ion yield at zero electric field, G_f(0), is determined to be 0.51 ± 0.05.
