Abstract

Beam-foil convoy electrons produced by the interaction of a H+ beam with energies ranging from 60–300 keV incident on carbon foils have been measured for different emission angles with respect to and close to the beam direction. We present three dimensional representations of our measured peaks in electron velocity space. The shape of the peak shows remarkable similarities with one that results from a convoluted Coulomb factor, which is characteristic for convoy electron mechanisms. However we observe that the measured peaks are broader than similar ones observed for gas targets under single collision conditions. We also studied experimentally the effect of beam dispersion inside the foil on spectra taken at θ = 0° as a function of foil thickness and conclude that though a noticeable effect is seen, the observed broadening is not accounted for. This peak broadening may be understood in terms of angular dispersion and energy straggling of the electrons through multiple scattering on their way to the exit surface.
