Abstract

We have studied the growth of Pd on Fe(100) using LEED and Auger electron spectroscopy. We find that Pd grows on Fe(100) epitaxially and without interdiffusion up to 2 monolayers (ML) while layer by layer growth continues up to at least 5 ML. Spin-resolved photoemission spectra show that 1 ML Pd is ferromagnetically ordered in agreement with our ab initio FLAPW band structure calculation.

This means that it is nonmagnetic in bulk but predicted to develop magnetic behavior in reduced dimensions [30–34]. As a further consequence, it can be significantly polarized in contact with a magnetic material (Pd on Co [35–37], Co on Pd [38–46], Pd/Co multilayers [20,47–58], Pd on Fe [21,35,59–62], Fe on Pd [38,63], Pd/Fe multilayers [48,64], Pd on Ni [65–70], Ni on Pd [70,71], Pd/Ni multilayers [72], NiFe alloy on Pd [73,74]). Especially in multilayer systems it might be therefore possible to obtain magnetic devices of enhanced quality or new properties by using this special material.

Pd does not fulfill the Stoner criterion to become ferromagnetic but is not far away from the threshold value [10]. Therefore, it can be significantly polarized in contact with a magnetic material (Pd on Fe [11–13], Fe on Pd [14,15], Pd/Fe multilayers [16], Pd on Co [17], Co on Pd [14,18], Pd/Co multilayers [19,20], Pd on Ni [21,22], Ni on Pd [23]). Especially in multilayer systems it might be therefore possible to obtain magnetic devices of enhanced quality or new properties by using this special material Pd.
