Abstract

We have developed a target system for 11C production using boron oxide as target material. It can be handled as conveniently as a gas target. The activity release is effected by the pressurized nitrogen as carrier gas. During irradiation the target is rotated in order to prevent the target material flowing off. The yield is 6 GBq [11C]CO2 after 1 h irradiation at a beam current of 10 μA.

Boron-comprising targets are prominent because of the high nuclear reaction cross section 11B(p, n)11C, enabling increased in-target production yields. Other examples are NaBH4 and B2O3 targets [8,17], developed for 11C production and extraction in the form of 11CH4 and 11CO2, respectively, where the release is likewise achieved by target heating, i.e. thermo-physical release of the generated 11C. A limiting factor of these two targets is the low operational temperature (<400 °C and 550 °C, respectively) constraining the applicable primary proton beam intensity, and therefore the produced activity.
