Size-dependent Stoner factor in Pd and Pt clusters

Abstract

We have studied the susceptibility of small Pd and Pt particles of diameter d=1–15nm. Both Pd and Pt are Stoner-enhanced Pauli paramagnets in bulk form. We observe a strong reduction of the susceptibility with decreasing d. A model is presented that describes the results in terms of a size-dependent Stoner factor.
