Abstract

A preliminary report on the preparation of gold single crystals in gels is given. The crystals are plates of mostly hexagonal and triangular shapes. The plate-like crystals are formed by the stacking of (111) planes and their edges are parallel to 〈110〉 directions. There exists a striking similarity between the form of gold crystals prepared in gels and that of secondary vacancy clusters observed in foils of quenched gold. This similarity is discussed in detail.

A detailed study of gold single crystal growth in a silica gel

Gold single microcrystals have been fabricated by electrochemical growth in a silica gel. Structural characterization of the single crystals by backscatter electron diffraction showed a preferred orientation of Au (1 1 1) and a minor orientation of Au (1 0 0). In addition, the influence of additives on the nucleation and growth of gold microcrystals has been studied. It was found that the inclusion of chemical additives in the growth solutions altered the characteristics of the gold crystals. Possible mechanisms for nucleation and growth of these crystals are discussed.
Laser induced photodeposition of gold upon p-silicon immersed in chloroauric acid solutions

Gold deposits on p-silicon substrates from chloroauric acid solutions have been obtained by the electroless photochemical deposition technique. A low-power incident laser beam (1 mW) was used with the intention of preventing the thermal decomposition of the precursor compound in the solution or pyrolytic effects at the substrate surface. Deposited spots of gold dots had diameters of 25–100 μm. The dots writing periods were in the range of 1–3 min. The surface morphology of the deposits was observed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and AFM (atomic force microscopy). The deposited patterns obtained at room temperature consist of columnar structures with characteristics grain dimensions of the order of 0.3–1.5 μm. Single-crystalline fcc-gold structures were observed for longer exposure times in the range 15–20 min.
Nucleation and growth of SnI<inf>4</inf> single crystals in silica gels

A detailed study of the variation in nucleation density and growth of stannic iodide (SnI₄) single crystals as a function of concentration of feed solution, gel aging, gel density and temperature is presented. It has been observed that the low density of gel gives good transparent single crystals and gel aging considerably reduces the number of nucleation sites. It has been found that the nucleation density decreases as the temperature increases. A simple procedure to control nucleation sites in gels has been adopted which has resulted in a dramatic increase in the size of the crystals. The growth of SnI₄ in silica gels under the influence of an externally applied uniform electric field has also been investigated. The implications are discussed.
Growth kinetics of tin iodide single crystals in silica gels

The development of abnormal growth in the form of needles, dendrites and rod-like platelets in single crystals of tin iodide (SnI₂) as a function of the concentration of feed solution in silica gels is reported. A brief description of the preparation of the material and the growth procedure is given. The effects of gel aging, of the concentration of the feed solution and of the temperature on the quality and nucleation of the crystals are reported. Kinetic studies of the nucleation and growth of SnI₂ needle crystals in silica gels showed that these crystals grow by a one-dimensional diffusion-controlled reaction between SnCl₂ and KI. The implications of this behaviour are discussed.
A new electrolytic method to grow silver dendrites and single crystals in gel

Growth of large silver dendrites and single crystals by a new electrolytic method in gel is reported. The current density, pH of the medium, and the density of the gel have profound influence on the growth and morphology of silver dendrites and crystals thus grown. Silver single crystals with different combinations of the forms in the isometric system have been grown. Compared to other conventional electrolytic growth techniques, the present method has additional parameters that can be varied. Hence this method appears quite promising for a more effective controlled growth of metals in good quality dendritic and single crystal forms.
Growth and characterization of SnI<inf>2</inf> and SnI<inf>4</inf> single crystals

Single crystals of SnI₂ and SnI₄ have been grown together in the same experimental set-up. The controlled reaction between SnCl₂ and KI by a diffusion process in a gel medium has been used. Bright yellow long needles of SnI₂ upto 9 mm and orange to reddish octahedral SnI₄ crystals up to 3–4 mm in size have been grown at room temperature. X-ray analysis showed that SnI₂ crystals belong to the monoclinic and SnI₄ to the cubic systems. The effect of concentration of reactants on the habit has been studied. Microtopographic investigations carried out on the as-grown faces have revealed the mechanism of crystal growth.
