Growth of gold single crystals in gels

Abstract

A preliminary report on the preparation of gold single crystals in gels is given. The crystals are plates of mostly hexagonal and triangular shapes. The plate-like crystals are formed by the stacking of (111) planes and their edges are parallel to 〈110〉 directions. There exists a striking similarity between the form of gold crystals prepared in gels and that of secondary vacancy clusters observed in foils of quenched gold. This similarity is discussed in detail.
