Abstract

Laser assistance can be used to improve the quality of some metallic deposits that are difficult to obtain otherwise. The influence of the laser beam on their morphology is presented in the case of electrodeposition of zinc onto a zinc surface for different conditions of deposition.

An electrochemical study of zinc deposition in a sulfate medium

In this paper we present a simple numerical model for voltammetric curves of the electrodeposition of zinc in sodium sulfate medium on a zinc rde. The approach relies upon the thermodynamics of the system Na₂SO₄-ZnSO₄-H₂O and especially the existence of ZnSO₄ ion pair in the liquid phase and how to take it into account for modelling. Recorded i-E curves are shown to be fitted in an approximate manner by three parameters, namely the exchange current density, the charge transfer coefficient and a “black-box” diffusion coefficient which expresses the overall diffusive behavior of the two species, Zn²⁺ and ZnSO₄. Construction of a more complex model, based on a more realistic mechanism, could not be successfully achieved from the available experimental data because of the poor statistical significance of the numerical values obtained. The more simple model is therefore preferred for the expression of i-E curves of zinc deposition.

The performance of the processes of electrodeposition can be considerably improved with aid of laser beam. The aim of this paper is to report the results of a comprehensive investigation of laser-assisted electrodeposition of zinc onto a zinc surface, which is known to be a troublesome example of metal deposition. The influence of various operating conditions, -power of pulsed YAG laser, concentration of electroactive species and electrode potential- on cell current and on deposit morphology is investigated. The data are interpreted in terms of heat transfer and photophysics.
