Abstract

The Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) extended by the inclusion of mode structure and atomic motion provides the most elementary model for the interaction of a single atom with an electromagnetic pulse. It is shown that the motion of a two-level atom through a spatially varying single-mode field gives rise to nonlinear transient effects which are similar to self-induced transparency and adiabatic following. These effects should readily be detectable with the present experiments on the JCM.

Recently, several generalizations have been proposed for this model [53,54]. As previous works have shown, the time-varying coupling is crucial for certain phenomena in quantum information and optics [55–57]. The quantum electrodynamics of the circuits has a rapid presence to develop quantum techniques for performing various tasks of quantum information and computation.
