Abstract

The oxidative addition of α,α'-dichloro-p-xylene to (Ph₃P)₂Ni(C₂H₄) affords the blue violet binuclear nickel(II) complex (Ph₃P)₂ClNiCH₂C₆H₄CH₂NiCl(PPh₃)₂. On the other hand no organonickel compound, but (Ph₃P)₂NiBr₂ and 1,2,5,6-dibenzocyclooctadiene are obtained by the reaction of α,α'-dibromo-o-xylene with (Ph₃P)₂Ni(C₂H₄). In ether oxidative addition of 1,2-dibromoethane is not observed.

The oxidative addition of α,α′-dichloro-p-xylene to (PCY₃)₂Ni(C₂H₄)/ Ni(COD)₂ affords the nickel(II) complex [(PCy₃)NiCl]₂(p-CH₂C₆H₄CH₂). By the reaction of α,α′-dibromo-o-xylene or α,α′-dibromo-2,3-dimethyl-naphthalene and (PCy₃)₂Ni(C₂H₄) or (PPh₃)₂Ni(C₂H₄ binuclear complexes but no metallacycles are obtained. With nickel(II) or nickel(I) halide complexes organodilithium compounds react either by partial substitution of the halide (formation of [PPh₃)₂NiBr]₂(p-C₆H₄) from (PPh₃)₂NiBr₂ and p-dilithiobenzene) or by reduction. Some of the new violet complexes are paramagnetic.
