Abstract

Using a nitrogen laser pumped dye laser (pulse duration τ ∼ 300 ps in conjunction with a boxcar integrator BCI 280 the fluorescence decay time of the J-aggregates of pseudoisocyanine chloride in aqueous solution has been measured. A strong dependence of the fluorescence lifetime on temperature (6 °C < T š 60 °C) and on concentration (3×10−3mol/1<c<3×10−2mol/1) was found. The observed lifetimes are long (τ ∼ 1 ns) at high concentrations or at low temperatures and short (τ < 100 ps) at low concentrations or at high temperatures. From this measurements the number of molecules forming one aggregate are estimated.
