Solutions of the convolution equation are given. A rigorous mathematical treatment shows that only one solution is consistent with the physical conditions. Application of these results to discrete examples has been carried out by means of an original deconvolution method, allowing isolation of the unique solution, and by a linear programming method. The results obtained are not satisfactory. This is because of the discrete nature of the problem and of the effect of errors in measurement. To obtain an acceptable solution it was necessary to introduce a weighting factor, as has been done in the LWL method.
