Summary
Retention data of 4 linear, 3 cyclic and 14 polycyclic methylsiloxanes were measured on four stationary phases (Apiezon L, SE-30, TWEEN-60, QF-1) at two different temperatures. A linear relationship was found between the retention indices and the Si-numbers of the linear and cyclic dimethylsiloxane molecules. Based on this fact a special index system (“Dimethylsiloxane Number”, DN) was introduced for low molecular weight methylpolysiloxanes. On the basis of experimental DN-values, characteristic intermolecular effects between the solutes and the stationary phases, and some structural characteristics of the solute substances were established. “DN”-values are nearly temperature-independent, and could be evaluated with equal precision both from isothermic and temperature-programmed measurements.
