Abstract
Phenylphosphinidene, formation of which by thermolysis is only considerable above 350°C, inserts into the C-C bond of biphenylene at 400°C forming 9-phenyl-9-phosphafluorene. Formation of 9-phenyl-9-phosphafluorene was demonstrated by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, and by comparison of the IR and mass spectra of the sulphide and oxide of the phosphafluorene with those of an authentic P-compound.
