Summary
By means of 700 optical measurements of cloud ceiling and 443 soundings made with a X-band vertical radar a comparison is made between these two methods. One finds out that the optical method gives better results for ceilings below 1000 through 1500 m, whereas above this level the radar method is more reliable. The reason for this is that low clouds have a high transparency for radar waves.
