W. Mayer, geboren 1887 in Graz, studierte in Wien, Zürich, Göttingen und Paris. 1912 in Wien promoviert, wurde er 1915 an der russischen Front schwer verwundet. Er habilitierte sich 1926 für Mathematik an der Wiener Universität und erhielt 1931 den Titel eines a. o. Professor. Er lebte seit 1935 in Amerika, als Associate des Princetoner Instituts. Er starb am 10. 9. 1948.

Mayers Arbeiten behandeln zum größten Teil Fragen der Differentialgeometrie; am bekanntesten wurde er durch das gemeinsam mitA. Duschek, verfaßte Lehrbuch über diese Disziplin, dessen 2. Band (Riemannsche Geometrie)Mayers geistiges Eigentum ist.
