Summary
A method is described for the simultaneous determination of water and carbon dioxide in 10-mg samples of rocks and minerals. The sample is heated at 1100–1200° in a current of purified nitrogen, and the resultant water and carbon dioxide are absorbed and determined gravimetrically. The method has been used for the analysis of both carbonates and silicates (including those which only lose their water above 1100°). The method showed a standard deviation of ± 0.05% H2O for a sample having a water content of 4.1%, and of ± 0.24% CO2 with a sample containing ca. 43% CO2. About eight determinations can be made per day.
