Summary
A method is described for the determination of ferrous iron in 3-mg to 5-mg samples of silicate and carbonate rocks and minerals. The sample is decomposed in a stoppered polytetrafluoroethylene tube by heating for 40 minutes at 100° with 18N sulphuric acid containing 10% by volume of 40% hydrofluoric acid. After cooling, the solution is treated with 2,2′-dipyridyl and brought to pH 5.0 by the addition of sodium acetate solution. Ferrous iron is estimated spectrophotometrically as the resultant red ferrous-dipyridyl complex. Ferric iron does not interfere. Results obtained for a range of rock and mineral samples (0.3–29% FeO) agree well with the values obtained by the conventional method. At a level of about 9% FeO a standard deviation of ± 0.07% FeO was found.
