Summary
Eggs of birds of prey were analysed for chlorinated hydrocarbons and mercury. The different contamination of Sparrow Hawk (Accipiter nisus) populations in two areas with mercury and organochlorine compounds caused a different rate of reproduction. The amount of Hg in the feathers of Sparrow Hawk could be defined as an indicator of environmental pollution in this region. A correlation between the concentrations of Hg in the feathers and the rate of non hatched eggs could be proved.
