Summary
The sequence of the plastid 5S rDNA of Pelargonium zonale hort. “Roseum” is presented. In the 5′ region of this gene there is almost no homology to the Escherichia coli promoter consensus sequences. In an E. coli minicell system we have demonstrated that the plastid promoter of the 16S rDNA is active in E. coli but no separate transcript of the cloned 5S rDNA can be detected. These results provide new evidence that the plastid 5S rDNA of P. zonale and probably also of other higher plants is not transcribed as a separate unit.
