Asymmetric transcription of SPP1 in vivo

Molecular and General Genetics MGG Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

In vivo transcription of B. subtilis phage SPP1 was studied by hybridization between RNA, pulse labelled with 3H-uridine at various times during phage development, and separated complementary strands (H-and L-strand) of SPP1 DNA. 3H RNA isolated from cultures of B. subtilis 168-2 early in SPP1 infection hybridizes exclusively with the H-strand. For a short period of time about 20 min after infection RNA is found which also hybridizes with the L-strand. Very late in infection RNA is again transcribed preferentially from the H-strand.
