Summary
In mosquitoes (Culex pipiens fatigans) infected with Plasmodium cathemerium the egg production is reduced (19%). The Azanstaining, Ninhydrin-Schiff-Reagens and Millon-Reagens indicate that the fat body of Culex contains proteins from the first to the third day after blood meal only. Paperchromatographic investigations of the free amino acids in the whole bodies of mosquitoes confirm that a very active phase of the protein metabolism finished after egg development. Some amino acids disappear after egg deposition and can not be seen in the following days. So the spectrum of amino acids becomes poor in normal mosquitoes: only 6 of 13 identified amino-acids reappear. In contrast there are 11 aminoacids in extracts of infected mosquitoes. The factors which could be responsible for these changes are discussed.
