Abstract

Ferulic acid was metabolised by a Penicillium sp. (probably P. rubrum) by a novel route involving a preliminary demethylation to caffeic acid, followed by side-chain shortening to yield protocatechuic acid which was subsequently broken down via the ortho-fission pathway.
