Effect of inhibitors of mitochondrial protein synthesis on the NADH and NADPH glutamate dehydrogenases in yeast

Summary

The activity of the baker's yeast NADH-linked glutamate dehydrogenase is strongly inhibited when the cells are grown in the presence of antibiotics which repress the mitochondrial protein synthesis. A simultaneous increase of the NADPH-linked glutamate dehydrogenase takes place. The behaviour of the glutamate dehydrogenases fromSaccharomyces cerevisiae under these conditions is very similar to that found when the wild type is cultured on high sugar concentrations and oxygen deprivation, or when the impaired respiration mutant is used. The activities of both enzymes in yeasts grown on different concentrations of non-fermentable substrates have been also investigated.
