Summary

A comparison is made of the results ofTrichophyton mentagrophytes-inoculations onto conventionally-reared and gnotobiotic I.C.R. strain Swiss white mice. It appears that the method of inoculationsite preparation has a decided effect on lesion development, since the mechanical removal of hair with scissors resulted in lesion formation, whereas in the experiments using a surgical depilatory, no lesions were formed.

The preliminary studies on the role of the allergic reaction in dermatomycotic pathogenesis indicate that more than three exposures to inocula which contained approximately 225,000 infective units (spores or mycelial fragments) are necessary for lesions to be produced in gnotobiotes. They also suggest that two such exposures toT. mentagrophytes do not sensitize the animal toMicrosporon gypseum.
